Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden in the Medical File

Nobody spoke.

Margaret stared at my phone.

I stared at her.

The message was simple.

Only four words.

*We need to talk.*

I looked up.

"You sent this?""

Margaret's face went pale.

"I didn't.""

The room went silent.

"Your phone is showing your name.""

She shook her head.

"I don't understand.""

Richard took a step closer.

"Let me see.""

I handed him the phone.

He looked at it.

Then at Margaret.

"Did you send this?""

"No.""

For once, she sounded afraid.

Daniel looked between us.

"What is happening?""

I wanted to laugh.

That was the question of the night.

What was happening?

My entire life had been rearranged in a few hours.

The husband I trusted was a stranger.

The family I married into was built on secrets.

And now my mother's death wasn't what I thought.

Richard looked at the phone again.

"Someone is using her number.""

Margaret shook her head.

"I don't know how.""

I watched her.

Trying to decide if I believed her.

I didn't know anymore.

Trust had become a dangerous thing.

Richard looked at me.

"Emily, you need to leave.""

I nodded.

For once, I agreed.

I grabbed my coat.

But before I reached the door, Daniel spoke.

"Emily.""

I stopped.

Not because I wanted to.

Because some part of me still remembered loving him.

"Please listen.""

I didn't turn around.

"I've listened for years.""

My voice cracked.

"I listened when you needed money.""

Silence.

"I listened when you needed excuses.""

I looked back.

"I listened when you told me I was overreacting.""

Daniel looked broken.

But I didn't know if I could trust broken people anymore.

"I'm sorry.""

The words came quietly.

I looked at him.

"Sorry doesn't rebuild trust.""

He lowered his head.

"I know.""

I opened the door.

Then Richard said something that stopped me.

"Emily.""

I turned.

He was holding the photograph of my mother and Margaret.

"There is something else.""

I closed my eyes.

Of course there was.

"What?""

Richard looked at Margaret.

She didn't stop him.

"The reason your mother and Margaret knew each other...""

He paused.

"...was because your mother was the original owner of this house.""

I froze.

"What?""

Daniel looked confused.

Richard continued.

"Before my family lived here, before Margaret moved in, your mother owned this property.""

My hand went cold.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"My mother never owned a house.""

"She did.""

Richard handed me another document.

"This house was sold under suspicious circumstances.""

I looked at the paper.

The name.

The date.

My mother's signature.

A signature I recognized.

But something was wrong.

I looked closer.

"This isn't her signature.""

Richard nodded.

"Exactly.""

The room went silent.

Someone had forged my mother's name.

Someone had taken her house.

Someone had hidden the truth.

And suddenly, every piece started connecting.

The money.

The documents.

The lies.

The photograph.

The medical records.

I looked at Margaret.

"What did you do?""

She looked horrified.

"Emily, I swear—"

But I wasn't listening.

Because my phone rang again.

The hospital.

I answered immediately.

"Hello?""

The woman sounded nervous.

"Mrs. Carter, I'm sorry. We reviewed the note again.""

"What note?""

"Your mother's note.""

My heart raced.

"What did you find?""

A long pause.

Then:

"We found another name written at the bottom.""

I gripped the phone.

"Whose?""

The woman took a breath.

"The name appears to be...""

She stopped.

Then whispered:

"Daniel Carter.""

I looked at my husband.

His face went completely white.

And for the first time that night...

I realized the person who betrayed me might not have been the only person who knew the truth.

May you like

Daniel had been hiding something about my mother.

Something that happened before I ever met him.
