Chapter 2: The House With Another Owner

I didn't leave.

Not because I wanted to stay.

Not because I forgave anyone.

I stayed because Richard's voice carried something I hadn't heard in that house for years.

Truth.

My hand throbbed as I sat back down.

The Christmas lights reflected against the windows, making the room look warm.

It wasn't warm.

It was colder than ever.

Richard opened the documents slowly.

Margaret stared at him.

"What are you doing?""

He didn't answer.

"Richard.""

Still nothing.

Finally, he looked at her.

"I should have done this years ago.""

Daniel stood.

"Dad, whatever this is, it's not the time.""

Richard looked at him.

"Actually, Daniel, this is exactly the time.""

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't understand what's happening.""

"I understand perfectly.""

Richard tapped the papers.

"I understand that my son allowed his wife to be humiliated in my home.""

Margaret scoffed.

"Don't exaggerate.""

Richard turned to her.

"She has a burned hand.""

The room went quiet.

For once, Margaret had no response.

Richard pulled out one document.

"Emily, do you remember when you helped renovate the kitchen?""

I frowned.

"Yes.""

"Do you remember paying for most of it?""

Daniel immediately interrupted.

"She didn't pay for most of it.""

I looked at him.

The lie came so easily.

Richard raised an eyebrow.

"Didn't she?""

Daniel looked away.

My stomach twisted.

Richard continued.

"Emily paid thirty-two thousand dollars toward this property.""

Margaret's face changed.

"What?""

I looked at Richard.

"I never told anyone.""

"I know.""

He placed another paper down.

"Because Daniel asked you not to.""

Daniel froze.

The silence was deafening.

I felt like the floor had disappeared beneath me.

Richard looked at his son.

"You told her to keep quiet because you wanted your parents to think you were successful.""

Daniel's face turned red.

"Dad, stop.""

"No.""

Richard's voice was stronger.

"For once, you're going to listen.""

Margaret looked between us.

"Emily knew about this?""

I laughed bitterly.

"Of course I knew.""

She looked offended.

"You never told me.""

I stared at her.

"You never asked.""

That was the first time I saw Margaret speechless.

Richard pushed the papers toward me.

"These are copies of the original property documents.""

I looked down.

My eyes moved across the page.

The words didn't make sense at first.

Then they did.

My name.

My name was there.

"What is this?""

Richard took a breath.

"When you paid for the renovation, you didn't realize the legal agreement Daniel signed.""

I looked at Daniel.

"What agreement?""

He didn't answer.

Richard did.

"Your husband transferred partial ownership rights to you as collateral.""

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

"That was temporary.""

Richard looked at him.

"Temporary doesn't mean imaginary.""

I stared at Daniel.

"You told me my money was just helping your parents.""

He said nothing.

"You told me we were building a future.""

Still nothing.

My voice dropped.

"How much did you know?""

Daniel looked frustrated.

"Emily, don't do this.""

"Don't do what?""

"Act like you're innocent.""

I actually laughed.

A quiet, broken laugh.

"Your mother slapped me.""

"And you embarrassed her.""

The words hit harder than the slap.

Richard closed his eyes briefly.

"Daniel.""

But Daniel kept going.

"You always make everything about yourself.""

I looked at the man I married.

And suddenly, I saw him clearly.

Not the man from our wedding photos.

Not the man who held my hand when my father died.

Not the man who promised forever.

I saw someone who had been comfortable because I kept making his life comfortable.

Richard gathered the papers.

"There is more.""

Margaret crossed her arms.

"What now?""

Richard looked at her.

"The house isn't the only thing.""

Daniel went still.

"Dad.""

Richard ignored him.

"There are financial records.""

My heart sank.

"What kind of records?""

Richard looked at me.

"Records showing where the money came from.""

I looked at Daniel.

His face had changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

"What are you talking about?""

Richard opened another folder.

"Emily, how much money did you give Daniel over the last few years?""

I hesitated.

"Why?""

"Just answer.""

I swallowed.

"Almost one hundred thousand dollars.""

Margaret gasped.

Daniel looked at me.

"You kept track?""

I stared.

"Of course I kept track.""

Richard nodded.

"Because you should know, Emily.""

He placed the folder down.

"Most of that money was not used for the business.""

My blood ran cold.

"What?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Tell her.""

Daniel didn't speak.

"Tell your wife where her money went.""

The room became silent.

I looked at my husband.

Waiting.

Hoping.

Maybe there was an explanation.

Maybe there was something I didn't know.

Maybe this wasn't what it looked like.

Then Daniel whispered:

"Emily...""

I held my breath.

He looked at me.

May you like

And said:

"I never planned to pay you back.""
