Chapter 5: The Signature That Betrayed Her

The signature at the bottom of the agreement belonged to Margaret.

For a few seconds, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.

My brain kept trying to find another explanation.

A mistake.

A misunderstanding.

Anything.

Because accepting the truth meant accepting that the woman who had spent years criticizing me had been secretly helping her son destroy me.

Margaret looked at the paper in Richard's hand.

Then she looked at me.

Her face changed.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

"You don't know what that is," she said.

Richard let out a quiet, disappointed laugh.

"I know exactly what it is.""

Margaret stepped forward.

"Richard, don't do this.""

"No.""

His voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

"You're not going to control this conversation anymore.""

Daniel stood between them.

"Dad, this isn't helping anyone.""

I looked at him.

"You mean it isn't helping you.""

He didn't answer.

Richard walked toward the table and placed the document beside the envelope.

"This agreement was signed six months ago.""

My eyes stayed on Margaret's signature.

"Why?""

The question came out softer than I expected.

Margaret looked at me.

"Emily—"

"Why did you sign it?""

She crossed her arms.

The same posture she used whenever she wanted to make me feel small.

But this time, something was different.

I wasn't afraid of her anymore.

"You need to understand something," she said.

"I don't need to understand anything.""

My voice surprised her.

"I need you to answer.""

For once, Margaret looked uncomfortable.

Daniel stepped in.

"Emily, this is complicated.""

I turned to him.

"No.""

I pointed at the papers.

"This is actually very simple.""

My hand trembled from the burn, but I didn't care.

"You lied.""

I looked at Daniel.

"You stole.""

Then Margaret.

"And you helped.""

The silence that followed felt heavier than anything before.

Richard nodded.

"That's exactly what happened.""

Margaret glared at him.

"You're enjoying this.""

"No.""

Richard looked exhausted.

"I'm mourning the fact that my family became this.""

That sentence landed harder than anger.

Because Richard wasn't furious.

He was disappointed.

And somehow, that made Daniel look even smaller.

I sat down slowly.

I needed answers.

Not excuses.

"Tell me everything.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Emily.""

"No.""

I looked at him.

"That word doesn't work anymore.""

He swallowed.

Richard opened another folder.

"After Daniel's company started losing money, he borrowed against future profits.""

I listened quietly.

"He told Emily the business was recovering.""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"It wasn't.""

Daniel stared at the floor.

"He needed more money.""

I looked at Margaret.

"And you helped him.""

She sighed.

"I was protecting my son.""

I laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

"By hurting me?""

She looked away.

"You don't understand what it's like to watch your child struggle.""

I stared at her.

"No.""

I shook my head.

"I understand exactly.""

My voice became sharper.

"I spent six years watching my husband struggle.""

I pointed at Daniel.

"I worked extra hours. I gave him my savings. I covered his mistakes.""

I looked at Margaret.

"And I did it because I loved him.""

The room was silent.

"Did you ever love me?""

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Margaret looked surprised.

For a moment, she almost looked human.

Then it disappeared.

"I loved you when you made Daniel happy.""

That answer hurt more than I expected.

Because it was honest.

Richard closed his eyes.

"Margaret.""

"No," she said.

"I've stayed quiet for years.""

She looked at me.

"Do you know what I saw?""

I didn't respond.

"I saw my son becoming smaller because of you.""

I stared.

"What?""

"You made him feel inadequate.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"Because I expected him to tell the truth?""

"Because you were always better than him.""

The words hung there.

Daniel looked up.

"Mom.""

She continued.

"You had the stable career. The savings. The discipline.""

Her voice became bitter.

"My son was always compared to people like you.""

I understood then.

This was never about me.

Not really.

I was just the person who represented everything Margaret believed Daniel lacked.

And instead of teaching her son responsibility, she protected his pride.

Even when it destroyed him.

Richard slid another document toward me.

"This is the loan agreement.""

I looked down.

My name wasn't on it.

But my bank information was attached.

My stomach turned.

"How?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"He used your information.""

Daniel finally spoke.

"I was going to tell you.""

I looked at him.

"When?""

He didn't answer.

"After I lost everything?""

Still nothing.

"After you blamed me?""

Silence.

I stood.

"I need to leave.""

Daniel moved toward me.

"Emily, please.""

I stepped back.

"Don't touch me.""

His face fell.

"I know I made mistakes.""

"Mistakes?""

I looked at him.

"Mistakes are forgetting an anniversary.""

I held up my burned hand.

"This is a choice.""

Nobody spoke.

I grabbed my coat.

Richard followed me to the hallway.

"Emily.""

I stopped.

"I'm sorry.""

I looked at him.

"For what?""

"For not seeing it sooner.""

I wanted to tell him it wasn't his fault.

But I couldn't.

Because part of me was angry at everyone who watched me disappear.

Even silently.

Richard handed me a small envelope.

"What is this?""

"Something your father-in-law left with me years ago.""

I frowned.

"My father-in-law?""

He nodded.

"Your father's.""

My heart stopped.

"My father?""

Richard looked at me.

"He knew something about this family before you married Daniel.""

I opened the envelope slightly.

Inside was a single handwritten note.

My father's handwriting.

The sight of it made my breath catch.

I hadn't seen his writing in three years.

I unfolded the paper.

There was only one sentence.

Emily,

If you ever find this, it means I was right to worry.

My hands started shaking.

At the bottom was a date.

A date from one week before my wedding.

May you like

And beneath it, my father's final warning:

*Never trust the man who makes you prove your love by sacrificing yourself.*
