Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Envelope

The attorney's words followed me even after the call ended.

"He transferred something else.""

I lowered the phone.

Nobody spoke.

The entire room felt like it was waiting.

Waiting for someone to admit the truth.

Daniel was the first to move.

"Give me that phone.""

I stepped back.

"No.""

His eyes narrowed.

"Emily.""

"No.""

For the first time in six years, I didn't soften my voice.

I didn't apologize.

I didn't try to make things easier.

Richard watched me carefully.

And I think he realized something had changed.

Margaret didn't.

She stood.

"This is ridiculous.""

I looked at her.

"Is it?""

She pointed at me.

"You come into this family and suddenly everything falls apart.""

I almost smiled.

"No, Margaret.""

I looked at Daniel.

"Everything was already broken.""

Richard picked up the envelope.

"There is one final document.""

Daniel shook his head.

"Dad, don't.""

Richard ignored him.

He removed a sealed paper.

"I wanted to wait until tomorrow.""

"Why?""

I asked.

Richard looked sad.

"Because I hoped my son would do the right thing tonight.""

He handed me the document.

"He didn't.""

My hands shook as I opened it.

The first page was a legal agreement.

The second page had signatures.

The third page had a name.

Daniel Carter.

I read slowly.

Then I looked up.

"What is this?""

Richard answered.

"This is a confession agreement.""

Daniel's face turned white.

I looked at him.

"A confession?""

He didn't speak.

Richard continued.

"Two years ago, Daniel admitted he had misrepresented financial information.""

My heart sank.

"What kind of information?""

Richard looked at Daniel.

"Tell her.""

Daniel was silent.

So Richard did.

"He told Emily the company was profitable.""

The room became still.

"But it wasn't.""

I felt numb.

Richard continued.

"He had been hiding losses for years.""

I stared at Daniel.

"You knew?""

Daniel looked desperate.

"I was going to fix it.""

"You always say that.""

My voice cracked.

"You always say you're going to fix things after you break them.""

He stepped toward me.

"Emily.""

I raised my hand.

Not to hit him.

Just to stop him.

"Don't.""

He stopped.

The man who once knew exactly how to calm me down suddenly didn't know what to say.

Richard looked at the documents.

"Daniel asked his father for money.""

Margaret interrupted.

"Because family helps family.""

Richard turned to her.

"Not when family lies.""

She went silent.

I looked at the house around me.

The decorations.

The lights.

The Christmas tree.

Everything that had once felt beautiful now looked like a stage.

A performance.

Daniel had been playing husband.

Margaret had been playing mother.

And I had been the only person who didn't know it was a show.

My phone buzzed again.

A message.

From the attorney.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A document.

My eyes moved across the screen.

Then stopped.

I looked at Daniel.

"What is this?""

His expression changed.

"What?""

I turned the phone toward him.

The document showed a transfer.

A large payment.

Made six months earlier.

From my personal account.

To Daniel.

But the signature wasn't mine.

My voice became quiet.

"Daniel.""

He didn't answer.

"Who signed this?""

His silence was enough.

Richard took the phone.

His face darkened.

"Daniel.""

Margaret looked confused.

"What is happening?""

Richard looked at his son.

"You forged her signature?""

Daniel finally exploded.

"I had no choice!""

The words echoed through the room.

No one moved.

I felt something inside me go completely still.

No tears.

No anger.

Just clarity.

Richard stared at him.

"You had a choice.""

Daniel looked at me.

"Emily, please.""

Please.

A word he used only when he needed something.

I looked at my wedding ring still sitting beside his plate.

Then at the man wearing the face of my husband.

"I spent years asking you to choose me.""

I picked up my coat.

"Tonight, I finally chose myself.""

I walked toward the door.

Behind me, Margaret shouted:

"You're really leaving?""

I stopped.

For a moment, I thought about turning around.

Then I heard Daniel say something.

Something so quiet I almost missed it.

"Mom...""

I looked back.

His face was terrified.

Not because he lost me.

Because he realized what he was about to lose.

Richard was holding another paper.

Another document.

Another secret.

He looked at me.

"Emily.""

I turned.

Richard's voice was low.

"There is one more name on this agreement.""

I froze.

"Whose?""

He looked directly at Daniel.

Then said:

"The person who helped him hide everything.""

And slowly, Richard turned the paper around.

May you like

The signature at the bottom belonged to someone I never expected.

Margaret.
