Chapter 3: The Man I Defended

For years, I believed I was saving my marriage.

I was actually protecting the person destroying it.

Daniel's confession hung in the air.

"I never planned to pay you back.""

The Christmas music continued playing softly from the living room.

A cheerful song about love.

A cruel joke.

I stared at him.

"Say that again.""

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Emily, you're twisting my words.""

"No.""

My voice was calm.

That scared him more.

"I want you to say exactly what you said.""

He looked away.

Richard shook his head.

"I can't believe you.""

Margaret stepped in.

"Richard, stop attacking our son.""

I turned toward her.

"Our son?""

She looked at me.

"Yes.""

I nodded slowly.

"Right.""

The woman who had just slapped me was still protecting him.

Of course she was.

Because Daniel had learned from someone.

"Margaret," I said quietly, "did you know?""

Her expression changed.

"Know what?""

"About the money.""

Silence.

That silence answered everything.

My chest tightened.

"You knew.""

She looked offended.

"Don't accuse me.""

"Then tell me I'm wrong.""

She didn't.

Richard sat down heavily.

"I found out three months ago.""

I looked at him.

"And you didn't tell me?""

His face showed regret.

"I was trying to collect everything first.""

I laughed.

Everyone kept saying they were trying to protect me.

But nobody had actually protected me.

Not once.

Daniel stood.

"I'm leaving.""

Richard looked at him.

"Sit down.""

"No.""

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

"This family meeting is ridiculous.""

I looked at him.

"Family?""

He stopped.

I pointed around the room.

"After tonight, you still think this is a family?""

His face hardened.

"You don't know what you're saying.""

"I know exactly what I'm saying.""

My hand burned beneath the cold water bottle Richard gave me.

"You watched your mother hurt me.""

Daniel looked away.

"You deserved to be corrected.""

The words made my stomach turn.

Richard stood so quickly his chair moved backward.

"Enough.""

Daniel looked at him.

"You always take her side.""

Richard stared.

"Because she is right.""

Daniel laughed.

"Of course.""

He looked at me.

"You came in here and changed everything.""

I stared.

"What?""

"You made Mom hate me.""

I almost couldn't believe it.

"Me?""

"Yes.""

His voice became louder.

"You made me feel like I wasn't enough.""

I whispered:

"I spent years making sure you felt like you were.""

He had no answer.

Because it was true.

I remembered every sacrifice.

The weekends I worked extra shifts.

The vacations I canceled.

The jewelry I sold when bills got too high.

The nights I sat beside him while he promised things would get better.

And now he was blaming me.

Richard opened the folder again.

"There is one more thing.""

Daniel froze.

"Dad.""

Richard looked at me.

"The debt.""

I frowned.

"What debt?""

Richard pulled out a bank statement.

"Daniel didn't just owe money.""

He slid it across the table.

"He owed people money.""

I looked at the numbers.

My eyes widened.

"These aren't business expenses.""

"No.""

Richard's voice was quiet.

"They were personal loans.""

Daniel's face changed.

"Don't.""

I looked at him.

"What did you do?""

He didn't answer.

Margaret suddenly looked nervous.

"Daniel.""

He turned toward her.

"I was going to fix it.""

Richard shook his head.

"No, you weren't.""

I looked at Daniel.

"You used my money to cover your debt.""

He finally snapped.

"What was I supposed to do?""

The anger in his voice shocked me.

"I was struggling!""

I stared.

"So you lied.""

"I was protecting us.""

"No.""

I shook my head.

"You were protecting yourself.""

A long silence followed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Everyone looked down.

I didn't recognize the number.

I answered.

"Hello?""

A man's voice came through.

"Is this Emily Carter?""

"Yes.""

"This is Michael Hayes from Hayes & Partners Law.""

I looked at Richard.

He looked surprised.

The attorney continued.

"I was instructed to contact you tonight regarding the documents filed under your name.""

My heart started beating faster.

"What documents?""

A pause.

Then:

"The ownership transfer of the property.""

I looked around the table.

Daniel went pale.

Margaret whispered:

"What did you do?""

The attorney continued.

"Mrs. Carter, there is something you need to know.""

I gripped the phone.

"What?""

His next words changed everything.

"Your father-in-law didn't just transfer the house.""

May you like

I stopped breathing.

"He transferred something else that your husband has been trying to hide.""
