Chapter 8: The Truth Richard Hid

The officer standing in the doorway removed his hat.

My stomach dropped.

I knew him.

Everyone in town knew him.

Officer James Cole.

The friendly police officer who visited the diner every morning.

The man customers trusted.

The man who always smiled when he walked through our doors.

But now he stood beside Victor Black.

And he wasn’t smiling.

Daniel looked at me.

“Is he bad?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know how someone could look so normal while doing something so wrong.

Michael stepped forward.

“Cole.””

The officer sighed.

“Michael.””

“You helped him find us.””

Cole looked away.

“I did what I had to do.””

Michael laughed bitterly.

“No. You did what you were paid to do.””

Victor walked beside him.

“Enough.””

He held out his hand.

“The necklace.””

Daniel stepped back.

“No.””

Victor’s eyes narrowed.

“You don’t understand what you’re holding.””

Daniel looked at him.

“My mom died protecting it.””

Victor’s face remained cold.

“And your mother made a mistake.””

Michael moved instantly.

But Cole raised his weapon.

“Don’t.””

Everyone froze.

Michael stared at him.

“You’re threatening a child.””

Cole’s expression shifted slightly.

For the first time, he looked uncomfortable.

Victor noticed.

“Don’t start growing a conscience now.””

The words hit him.

Cole looked away.

I realized something.

Even Victor’s allies were afraid of him.

That was when I knew this was bigger than money.

Bigger than evidence.

This man controlled people through fear.

A loud sound came from outside.

Another car.

Then another.

Victor smiled.

“Richard finally arrived.””

My heart jumped.

Mr. Harris.

The front door opened.

And there he was.

His shirt was torn.

A bruise covered his face.

But he was standing.

Daniel ran toward him.

“You’re okay!””

Mr. Harris looked surprised.

Then emotional.

He placed a hand on the boy’s shoulder.

“I promised I would tell you the truth.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Were you my dad’s friend?””

Mr. Harris looked at Michael.

Then lowered his eyes.

“I was.””

“What happened?””

Mr. Harris took a deep breath.

“I failed him.””

Michael’s expression softened slightly.

“You saved my life.””

Everyone looked at him.

Mr. Harris nodded.

“After Victor attacked us, I helped Michael escape.””

“Then why did everyone think he was dead?””

Mr. Harris looked ashamed.

“Because I helped create that lie.””

Daniel stared.

“Why?””

“Because Victor threatened Emily.””

The room went silent.

“He said if anyone knew Michael survived, Emily and the baby would never be safe.””

Daniel touched his chest.

“The baby?””

Mr. Harris looked at him.

“You.””

The boy froze.

Michael closed his eyes.

“I wanted to come back.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“Then why didn’t you?””

Michael’s voice broke.

“Because every attempt put you in danger.””

He looked at Victor.

“And because he made sure I disappeared.””

Victor rolled his eyes.

“You all love pretending you’re victims.””

Mr. Harris turned toward him.

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“You’re the only person here who never paid for what you did.””

Victor laughed.

“Really?””

He stepped closer.

“You think your guilt makes you better?””

Mr. Harris looked at Daniel.

“No.””

Then he looked at Victor.

“But maybe admitting what I did is the first thing you never learned.””

The room went quiet.

Even Victor seemed surprised.

Then the memory card in Michael’s hand began flashing.

A tiny red light.

Everyone saw it.

Victor’s face changed.

“What is that?””

Michael smiled.

“The proof.””

Victor moved forward.

But Daniel stepped between them.

“No.””

Everyone stopped.

The little boy who had walked into a diner asking only for rice stood in front of the most dangerous man in the room.

Victor stared at him.

“You think you can stop me?””

Daniel held the necklace.

“My mom did.””

For a moment, Victor looked almost human.

Then his expression hardened.

“Take him.””

The men behind him moved.

But before they reached Daniel, every phone in the room suddenly rang at the same time.

Everyone looked down.

A message had appeared.

One sentence.

From an unknown number.

May you like

And it changed everything.

“Your evidence is already uploaded. The world knows what happened.””
