Chapter 7: The Father Behind the Door
The man standing at the top of the stairs looked like someone who had spent years fighting a war nobody knew existed.
His hair was gray.
His face was thinner than the photograph.
But there was no doubt.
Daniel knew him.
And he knew Daniel.
For a few seconds, neither of them moved.
Then the boy whispered the word he had been afraid to say.
“Dad?””
The man’s face collapsed.
Not from sadness.
From the pain of hearing a name he thought he would never hear again.
He slowly walked down the stairs.
“Daniel…”
The boy stepped forward.
Then stopped.
Like his heart wanted to run into his father’s arms, but his mind was afraid to believe.
“You’re real?””
The man nodded.
“I’m real.””
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“But Mom said…”
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I know what she told you.””
“Why didn’t you come back?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of waiting.
The man looked down.
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
A sharp sound came from the shadows behind him.
A gun being raised.
“Careful, Michael.””
My entire body went cold.
Michael.
The name from the story.
Daniel’s father.
The person everyone thought was dead.
A figure stepped out from the darkness.
Victor Black.
He had followed us.
Of course he had.
Michael immediately moved in front of Daniel.
“Stay away from him.””
Victor smiled.
“You always were dramatic.””
I grabbed Daniel’s shoulder and pulled him behind me.
Victor looked amused.
“You really think you’re protecting him?””
“You won’t touch him.””
Victor tilted his head.
“Funny. Richard said the same thing twenty years ago.””
The mention of Mr. Harris changed the room.
Michael’s expression hardened.
“Where is Richard?””
Victor smiled.
“Still trying to fix what he broke.””
Daniel looked between them.
“What happened?””
Nobody answered.
I stepped forward.
“No more secrets.””
Both men looked at me.
I didn’t care who they were.
Not anymore.
“This child has spent his whole life believing his father was dead. His mother died protecting him. And all of you keep talking like he’s a piece in some game.””
The room went silent.
Victor lowered the gun slightly.
Michael looked at Daniel.
“You’re right.””
He took a slow breath.
“There are things you deserve to know.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Then tell me.””
Michael sat down on the bottom step.
“Your mother and I discovered something dangerous.””
“What?””
“A company was hiding illegal activities. People were getting hurt. We found proof.””
I looked at the metal box.
The evidence.
“The key?””
Michael looked at the necklace.
“Yes.””
Daniel touched it.
“What’s inside?””
Michael looked toward Victor.
“The information that can destroy him.””
Victor laughed.
“You still believe that?””
Michael ignored him.
“Your mother hid the final evidence inside the pendant.””
I stared.
“How?””
Michael reached toward the necklace.
“Open it.””
Daniel handed it to him.
Michael turned the pendant over and pressed a tiny hidden piece of metal.
A small compartment opened.
Inside was a tiny memory card.
I gasped.
All this time, it had been there.
Victor’s expression changed for the first time.
Fear.
Michael noticed.
“That’s what you were afraid of.””
Victor stepped forward.
“Give it to me.””
Daniel backed away.
“No.””
Victor looked at him.
“Your mother died because she refused to cooperate.””
Michael stood.
“She died because of people like you.””
The room became heavy.
I looked at Victor.
“You killed her?””
Victor smiled coldly.
“I didn’t pull the trigger.””
Daniel covered his mouth.
Michael’s fists tightened.
“But you ordered it.””
Victor said nothing.
That was the answer.
Then suddenly, headlights appeared outside.
More cars.
More people.
Victor looked toward the window.
A small smile returned.
“You really thought I came alone?””
Michael’s face changed.
“Run.””
“What?””
“Now!””
We moved toward the back door.
Daniel grabbed Michael’s hand.
For the first time in his life, he held his father’s hand.
But before we reached the exit, a loud crash came from the front of the house.
The door burst open.
Several men entered.
Victor stepped aside.
And one of them walked forward.
Someone I recognized.
May you like
Someone who should have been on our side.
Because wearing the same uniform as the police officers outside was the man who had been helping Victor all along.
