Chapter 14: The Message She Left Behind
Nobody moved.
Michael stared at the phone.
The name glowing on the screen belonged to a woman who had been gone for months.
A woman everyone believed was gone forever.
Emily.
Daniel stood immediately.
“Mom?””
Michael couldn’t answer.
His hand trembled.
The phone continued ringing.
Lily covered her mouth.
“How is that possible?””
No one knew.
Finally, Michael answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then a recording played.
A voice.
A voice that changed everything.
“Michael.””
Everyone froze.
It was Emily.
Older.
Tired.
But alive in that recording.
“If you’re hearing this, it means Daniel and Lily are together.””
Daniel started crying.
His mother’s voice.
After all this time.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you the truth sooner.””
Michael closed his eyes.
Emily continued.
“I knew Victor would never stop searching.””
The recording paused.
Then:
“But I also knew he would underestimate the one thing he never understood.””
A soft breath.
“Love.””
Lily held Daniel’s hand.
Emily continued.
“I need you to know something.””
Michael listened carefully.
“I wasn’t gone because I wanted to leave.””
A tear rolled down his face.
“I was hiding because someone had to make sure you all survived.””
Daniel whispered:
“She’s alive.””
Everyone looked at him.
Because somehow, everyone felt it too.
The message continued.
“There is one final piece of evidence.””
Michael looked confused.
“One final piece?””
Emily’s voice became quieter.
“Victor didn’t work alone.””
Everyone looked at each other.
The room changed.
Again.
“No,” Lily whispered.
Emily continued.
“The person closest to us was the one who betrayed us.””
Michael’s face hardened.
“Who?””
But the recording didn’t answer.
Instead, Emily said:
“You already know.””
The message ended.
Everyone stood in silence.
Then Mr. Harris spoke.
“Someone close to us.””
Michael looked at Lily.
Then Daniel.
Then me.
Fear returned.
Not the same fear as before.
Something worse.
Because enemies were easy.
Friends were harder.
Lily looked at the phone.
“There’s more.””
She pointed.
A small attachment.
A video file.
Michael opened it.
The screen showed a room.
Dark.
Empty.
Then a person walked into view.
Everyone gasped.
Because the person on the screen was Emily.
Alive.
But she wasn’t alone.
Standing beside her was someone we recognized.
Someone impossible.
Someone who should have been dead.
Michael dropped the phone.
“No.””
Daniel looked confused.
“Who is that?””
Michael couldn’t speak.
Lily answered.
“Your grandfather.””
The room went silent.
I looked at Michael.
“You thought he was dead?””
He nodded slowly.
“My father died twenty-five years ago.””
The video continued.
Emily looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, then he has returned.””
She paused.
“And he knows the truth.””
Michael whispered:
“What truth?””
The video ended.
But one final message appeared.
A sentence typed beneath the file.
May you like
A sentence that made everyone understand the entire story had been built on another lie.
“Richard Harris was never the man who betrayed us.””
