Chapter 5: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

For a moment, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Daniel.

Not even Mr. Harris.

The diner felt frozen in time.

Victor Black stood near the broken window, his coat untouched, his expression calm.

Like he had been waiting twenty years for this moment.

Daniel looked at Mr. Harris.

“My dad is alive?””

Mr. Harris didn’t answer.

That was enough.

The little boy’s face changed.

First confusion.

Then hope.

Then fear.

“You knew?””

Mr. Harris swallowed.

“Daniel…”

“You knew my dad was alive?””

His voice cracked.

Mr. Harris looked away.

“I thought he was.””

Victor laughed quietly.

“That’s the problem with Richard. He always thought.””

Mr. Harris turned toward him.

“Shut up.””

Victor walked deeper into the diner.

“No, Richard. He deserves to know.””

I stepped in front of Daniel.

“You’re not coming any closer.””

Victor looked at me.

Almost amused.

“And who are you?””

“The person who won’t let you hurt him.””

He smiled.

“That’s what Emily said too.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“You knew my mom?””

Victor’s smile disappeared.

“Yes.””

The answer came too quickly.

Too easily.

Daniel took a step back.

“What did you do to her?””

Victor looked at the boy.

“Your mother made bad choices.””

Mr. Harris moved forward.

“Don’t.””

Victor looked at him.

“Still pretending you’re the hero?””

The words cut deeper than anger.

Mr. Harris clenched his fists.

“You destroyed everything.””

Victor laughed.

“No. You did.””

The accusation hung in the air.

I looked at Mr. Harris.

“What does he mean?””

Neither man answered.

Finally, Victor walked toward the table.

“Tell her, Richard.””

Mr. Harris remained silent.

Victor continued.

“Tell her how you gave us Emily’s location.””

Daniel gasped.

“No.””

I looked at Mr. Harris.

His face said everything.

“You found her because of him?””

Mr. Harris looked sick.

“I didn’t know what Victor would do.””

“That’s what you tell yourself?””

Mr. Harris stepped back.

“I was trying to protect them.””

Victor smiled.

“By betraying them.””

Daniel stared at Mr. Harris.

“My mom trusted you?””

The question broke him.

“Yes.””

His voice was barely audible.

“She did.””

“Then why?””

Mr. Harris looked at the floor.

“Because I was afraid.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel removed the necklace from his neck.

“You’re the reason she was scared?””

Mr. Harris’s eyes filled.

“No.””

Daniel shook his head.

“You said you wanted to help me.””

“I do.””

“Why should I believe you?””

Mr. Harris had no answer.

And honestly, neither did I.

Because the man standing before us was not just a victim.

He was someone who had made a terrible choice.

Victor stepped closer.

“Give me the necklace, Daniel.””

The boy held it tightly.

“No.””

Victor’s expression changed.

The first sign of anger.

“Your mother should have given it to me years ago.””

“What’s inside?””

Victor looked at Mr. Harris.

That small reaction was all I needed.

There was something more.

Something they were both hiding.

Mr. Harris suddenly moved.

He grabbed a chair and pushed it toward Victor.

“Run!””

I grabbed Daniel’s hand.

We rushed toward the back door.

Behind us, the diner exploded into noise.

Shouting.

Falling furniture.

A crash.

We reached the alley.

Cold air hit my face.

Daniel was breathing heavily.

“Where are we going?””

I looked at the metal box in my hands.

I didn’t know.

But then I remembered something.

The letter.

The one Mr. Harris had shown me.

The one that started with:

If you are reading this, it means you finally learned the truth…

I opened it under the alley light.

There was a second page hidden inside.

A message written at the bottom.

Not for Richard.

For Daniel.

My hands shook as I read it.

“Daniel, if you ever find this…”

I stopped.

May you like

Because the final sentence made my heart race.

“Your father is waiting for you at the place where our family began.””
