Chapter 11: The Girl Who Carried the Secret

We drove for nearly two hours before anyone spoke.

The entire time, Daniel sat in the back seat beside Michael.

His father.

A man he had found after years of believing he was gone.

But neither of them looked happy.

They looked scared.

Because finding one lost family member had revealed another missing piece.

Lily.

The name repeated in my mind.

A girl who had lived her entire life hidden from the world.

A girl who might hold the final answer.

The address led us to a small coastal town.

Quiet.

Almost too quiet.

The house was at the end of a narrow road.

Blue paint.

White fence.

A place that looked normal.

That somehow made it worse.

Michael stepped out of the car slowly.

“I’ve never been here.””

Daniel looked at him.

“Are you nervous?””

Michael smiled sadly.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I’m about to meet someone I should have known my whole life.””

Daniel looked down.

“I know how that feels.””

The words hit Michael hard.

He reached for Daniel’s hand.

This time, Daniel let him.

We walked to the door.

Michael knocked.

Nothing.

He knocked again.

Still nothing.

Then a voice came from behind us.

“Who are you?””

We turned.

A young woman stood near the fence.

She looked about twenty years old.

Dark hair.

A familiar expression.

The same eyes as Emily.

Michael stopped breathing.

The woman looked at him.

And whispered:

“Dad?””

The world seemed to stop.

Michael couldn’t move.

Neither could she.

Then she looked at Daniel.

Her expression changed.

“Who is he?””

Daniel stared.

“I’m Daniel.””

The woman stepped closer.

“How do you know my mother’s name?””

Michael’s voice finally returned.

“Your mother…”

He swallowed.

“Was Emily Carter.””

The woman’s face went pale.

“You knew her?””

Michael nodded.

“I’m your father.””

The woman laughed once.

But there was no humor.

“No.””

She shook her head.

“My father died.””

Daniel looked at her.

“So did mine.””

That made her stop.

The two siblings stared at each other.

Both carrying the same wound.

Both abandoned by the same lie.

The woman looked at Michael.

“Who told you I was here?””

“Your mother.””

She looked away.

“My mother has been dead for years.””

“I know.””

“Then how?””

Michael held up the letter.

Her eyes immediately focused.

“That handwriting…”

“You recognize it?””

The woman stepped forward.

“My mother’s.””

She took the paper.

Her hands trembled.

“She told me never to trust anyone who came looking for me.””

Michael looked hurt.

“Not even me?””

She looked at him.

Especially you.

The words were painful.

But fair.

Before anyone could respond, a car drove past slowly.

Too slowly.

The woman noticed.

Her face changed.

“No.””

“What?””

She looked toward the road.

“We have to leave.””

Michael frowned.

“Why?””

She looked at Daniel.

“Because they found me.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

She didn’t answer.

She opened the front door.

Inside, the house was covered with books, files, and old photographs.

Evidence.

Lots of it.

She grabbed a small bag.

Then she turned to us.

“My name is Lily.””

Daniel nodded.

“I’m your brother.””

Her eyes filled.

For a moment, she looked like a child again.

A child who had waited her entire life for someone to say those words.

Then a loud crash came from outside.

The front window shattered.

Everyone dropped.

Someone had fired a shot.

Michael pushed Daniel down.

Lily grabbed the files.

And from outside, a familiar voice shouted:

“You should have stayed hidden, Lily.””

Victor Black.

Except Victor was supposed to be in custody.

Michael looked toward the window.

Impossible.

May you like

Then Lily whispered the truth.

“He was never arrested.””
