Chapter 9: The Last Lie Daniel Told Me
The house was silent.
Not peaceful.
Not calm.
Silent in the way a room becomes silent when everyone inside knows something terrible is about to happen.
Daniel stood downstairs.
Ashley and I stood upstairs.
Two women who, hours earlier, had been sitting across from each other at a dinner table, unaware that we were both trapped inside the same lie.
“Emily.””
Daniel’s voice traveled through the house.
Soft.
Controlled.
Almost gentle.
That was the voice that used to make me feel safe.
Now it made my skin crawl.
Ashley grabbed my arm.
“Don’t answer.””
I stared at the staircase.
“He knows I’m here.””
“That doesn’t mean you have to open the door.””
“He’s my husband.””
Ashley looked at me.
“Not tonight.””
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I walked slowly toward the stairs.
Ashley whispered:
“Emily, please.””
I stopped.
For a moment, I saw myself from months ago.
The woman who waited for Daniel.
The woman who defended him.
The woman who believed every explanation because the alternative was too painful.
That woman was gone.
I stepped down.
“Daniel.””
His head lifted immediately.
He was standing in the living room.
Still wearing the same suit from the dinner.
The same suit he wore when I handed him divorce papers.
But he looked completely different now.
Not like a successful executive.
Like someone who knew the walls were closing in.
“Ashley is upstairs, isn’t she?””
I didn’t answer.
His jaw tightened.
“I knew it.””
“You came here to ask about Ashley?””
“No.””
“Then why are you here?””
He looked at me.
For a second, he looked hurt.
Actually hurt.
“I came because I need to talk to you.””
I almost smiled.
“Talk.””
“Yes.””
“Now?””
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice sharpened.
“You had eleven months to talk.””
He lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“Did you?””
The question surprised him.
“Did you really know?””
He didn’t answer.
Because he didn’t.
Knowing meant understanding what your silence was doing to someone.
Daniel walked closer.
I stepped back.
He noticed.
And that seemed to hurt him.
“You’re afraid of me.””
I stared at him.
“I’m afraid of the person you became.””
He looked away.
“I never wanted this.””
I laughed quietly.
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
“No, Daniel.””
I shook my head.
“You wanted something.””
He looked at me.
“You wanted success.””
“Yes.””
“You wanted money.””
His expression changed.
“Yes.””
“You wanted my father’s connections.””
Silence.
“And you wanted me.””
His eyes softened.
“I did love you.””
The sentence almost broke me.
Because it was the one thing I had wanted to hear.
Even now.
Even after everything.
Part of me still wanted to believe it.
But then I remembered the files.
The timeline.
*Meeting Emily — establish trust.*
I looked at him.
“Did you?””
His face fell.
“What?””
“Did you love me before you needed me?””
Daniel froze.
And that pause destroyed whatever hope remained.
I nodded slowly.
“Right.””
“Emily, that’s not fair.””
“Fair?””
My voice rose.
“You want to talk about fair?””
I pointed toward the office.
“Was it fair when you used my name on documents?””
He looked away.
“Was it fair when you let everyone think Michael was a criminal?””
No answer.
“Was it fair when you sat across from me every night and pretended everything was normal?””
His face tightened.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I stepped closer.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But it stopped him.
“You were trying to protect yourself.””
Daniel looked at me.
And for the first time, he didn’t argue.
I continued.
“You weren’t afraid I would get hurt.””
I shook my head.
“You were afraid I would find out.””
A long silence followed.
Then Daniel whispered:
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked toward the stairs.
Toward Ashley.
Then back at me.
“Michael was going to destroy everything.””
I stared.
“He was going to expose you.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Daniel swallowed.
“I had no choice.””
There it was.
The sentence every person uses when they want forgiveness without responsibility.
“No choice?””
I laughed.
“You always had choices.””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“You think I wanted to lose my company?””
“No.””
“You think I wanted to hurt people?””
I stared at him.
“I think you wanted to avoid consequences.””
He said nothing.
I continued.
“You could have told the truth.””
“I would have lost everything.””
“Yes.””
The answer shocked him.
I continued.
“And maybe you should have.””
Daniel looked like I had slapped him.
Because I think he finally realized something.
I wasn’t trying to save him anymore.
“I loved you,” he whispered.
I looked at him.
“I know.””
The honesty surprised him.
“But love doesn’t erase what you did.””
He looked down.
Then he said something I never expected.
“You want the truth?””
I stayed silent.
“Fine.””
He took a breath.
“The night Michael disappeared…”
I waited.
“He didn’t find out about the money first.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“What?””
Daniel looked exhausted.
“He found out about something else.””
“What?””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Your father’s company wasn’t the only thing involved.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked toward the office.
“Michael discovered the original source of the money.””
I stared.
“Where did it come from?””
His voice became quiet.
“An account connected to your family.””
I froze.
“My family?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Emily—”
“No.””
I backed away.
“You don’t get to use my family now.””
“I’m not.””
“Then what are you doing?””
“Trying to tell you the truth.””
I laughed.
“Now?””
“Yes.””
“After everything?””
His face tightened.
“I was protecting you.””
I looked at him.
“There’s that word again.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
Then the sound of footsteps came from upstairs.
Ashley appeared.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Daniel immediately looked angry.
“Ashley.””
“No.””
She came down the stairs.
“He’s changing the story.””
Daniel shook his head.
“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””
Ashley looked at him.
“I know exactly what I’m talking about.””
“You think you’re innocent?””
Her face changed.
Pain.
Not fear.
Pain.
“I know I’m not.””
That surprised both of us.
Ashley looked at me.
“I made mistakes.””
Then she looked at Daniel.
“But I never tried to destroy someone to save myself.””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“You should be careful.””
Ashley went still.
I noticed.
That tiny reaction.
A flash of fear.
“What does that mean?”” I asked.
Daniel looked at me.
“Nothing.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“What does that mean?””
He didn’t answer.
Ashley did.
“He threatened me.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Ashley.””
She shook her head.
“I’m done protecting you.””
My heart raced.
“How?””
She swallowed.
“After Michael disappeared, Daniel told me that if I ever talked…”
She looked at me.
“He would make sure everyone knew I helped him.””
The room went cold.
Daniel’s silence confirmed it.
I looked at my husband.
“You blackmailed her.””
“No.””
“Then deny it.””
He couldn’t.
And that was the final answer.
Suddenly, my phone rang.
I looked down.
A number I didn’t recognize.
Daniel saw it.
And his face changed.
Not anger.
Fear.
Again.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice spoke.
“Emily?””
My heart stopped.
Michael.
“Michael?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Don’t.””
I ignored him.
Michael sounded urgent.
“You need to leave that house.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Why?””
A pause.
Then Michael said:
“Because Daniel didn’t come there to confess.””
My grip tightened.
“What do you mean?””
Michael’s voice dropped.
“He came there because he knows the final evidence is inside.””
I looked around.
The house.
The walls.
The place I had called home.
“Where?””
Michael answered:
“In the room you never questioned.””
I frowned.
“What room?””
Silence.
Then:
“Your bedroom.””
I looked toward the stairs.
Daniel went pale.
And that was when I knew.
Whatever was hidden in my bedroom…
Was the one thing Daniel never thought I would find.
Michael whispered:
“Emily, whatever you do…”
May you like
A pause.
“Do not let Daniel get there first.””
