Chapter 3: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Gone
Daniel stared at the phone screen like it was a weapon pointed directly at him.
The name glowing in his hand belonged to a ghost.
*Michael Bennett.*
For eleven months, Daniel had allowed everyone to believe Michael was a thief.
A liar.
A man who betrayed his own company.
But now his name was appearing on Daniel’s phone in front of everyone.
And my husband looked terrified.
Not confused.
Not shocked.
Terrified.
“Answer it,” I said.
Daniel looked at me.
His fingers tightened around the phone.
“Emily…”
“Answer it.””
His mother looked between us.
“Daniel, who is calling you?””
He didn’t respond.
The phone kept ringing.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
The entire room watched as his confidence disappeared with every second.
Finally, he answered.
“Hello?””
Nobody spoke.
Daniel turned slightly away, but it was too late.
We were all listening.
His face changed.
The color drained from it.
“Where are you?””
A pause.
Then:
“No. You don’t understand.””
I stepped closer.
“Put it on speaker.””
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“Absolutely not.””
That answer told me everything.
I looked at Ashley.
She looked down.
Like she already knew what was coming.
I reached out.
“Give me the phone.””
Daniel pulled it away.
“Emily, this is not the way to do this.””
I laughed quietly.
“The way to do this?””
My voice cracked.
“You mean there’s a proper way to find out my husband ruined someone’s life?””
His eyes flashed with anger.
“I didn’t ruin anyone’s life.””
“Then why are you afraid of him?””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was when Michael’s voice came through the phone.
Even without speaker mode, I heard enough.
“Daniel.””
The entire room froze.
Michael sounded older.
Exhausted.
Like someone who had been carrying a weight for too long.
“You need to tell her.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Michael, don’t.””
“You had eleven months.””
A silence followed.
Then Michael continued.
“You had eleven months to tell Emily the truth.””
My stomach dropped.
Because he said my name.
He knew.
He knew I was there.
I looked at Daniel.
“How does he know I’m here?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
The phone remained pressed to his ear.
“Where are you?””
Michael gave a bitter laugh.
“You still don’t get it, do you?””
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Michael.””
“No. You don’t get to threaten me anymore.””
The room became painfully quiet.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You don’t know what you’re doing.””
Michael replied instantly.
“I know exactly what I’m doing. I’m ending the lie.””
Then the call ended.
Daniel stood there holding the phone.
Nobody moved.
Nobody knew what to say.
Except me.
“Start talking.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily…”
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I am done hearing my name before another excuse.””
His jaw tightened.
“You think you understand what happened.””
“I know I don’t.””
That seemed to surprise him.
I stepped closer.
“But I know one thing.””
I pointed toward the phone.
“Michael is alive.””
Daniel said nothing.
“And you made me believe he abandoned everyone.””
Still nothing.
“You let people hate him.””
His silence was an answer.
I felt something break inside me.
Not because of Michael.
Because of the man standing in front of me.
The man I had shared a home with.
A bed with.
A life with.
“You watched me feel sorry for you.””
Daniel looked away.
“What?””
I swallowed.
“I felt sorry for you.””
My voice became quieter.
“I thought your stress was because you lost your friend. I thought you were grieving. I thought you were struggling because someone betrayed you.””
I looked at him.
“But you weren’t grieving him.””
A tear slipped down my cheek.
“You were hiding from him.””
Daniel’s expression softened for half a second.
Then he looked away again.
That hurt more than anger.
Because it meant he knew.
He knew exactly what he had done.
His father stood.
“Daniel, I want an explanation.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Dad…”
“No.””
His father’s voice was firm.
“I defended you when everyone said Michael couldn’t have done that. I told people my son was honest.””
He shook his head.
“Tell me I was right.””
Daniel didn’t respond.
And his father sat back down slowly.
That was the moment I realized something.
Daniel hadn’t just lied to me.
He had built an entire world out of lies.
Ashley walked toward the table.
“I need to tell you something else.””
Daniel looked at her.
“No.””
She ignored him.
“Emily, the night Michael disappeared, I was there.””
I looked at her.
“You were?””
She nodded.
“I was working late because Daniel asked me to prepare documents.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Ashley.””
But she kept going.
“I thought it was just another business meeting.””
She looked down.
“Until I heard them arguing.””
“About what?””
Her eyes met mine.
“About the money.””
The room went quiet again.
I stared at Daniel.
“What money?””
Ashley hesitated.
“Before Michael left the company, he discovered someone had been moving funds.””
My heart sank.
“Someone?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s enough.””
“No,” I said.
This time, my voice was stronger.
“Let her finish.””
Ashley took a breath.
“Michael found missing money from several accounts.””
I looked at Daniel.
“And he thought it was Michael?””
Ashley shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Daniel.
“He knew it was Daniel.””
The words hit harder than anything else that night.
Daniel’s face changed.
Not guilt.
Fear.
“Don’t do this, Ashley.””
She looked hurt.
“I protected you.””
Daniel went silent.
“I covered for you.””
Her voice broke.
“I lied because you told me we were fixing everything.””
Everyone turned toward her.
Including me.
“We?””
Ashley closed her eyes.
For a second, I thought she meant what I feared.
That there had been more.
That maybe the betrayal was exactly what I had imagined.
But then she looked at me.
“I was never his affair.””
The words stunned me.
“What?””
Ashley wiped her face.
“I know what it looks like.””
She glanced at Daniel.
“I know everyone assumed it.””
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“But I was covering something else.””
“What?””
She reached into her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a small envelope.
“I kept this because I was afraid.””
Daniel moved toward her.
“Ashley.””
She held it away.
“No more.””
She handed it to me.
I looked at the envelope.
My name wasn’t on it.
But there was a date.
The same date Michael disappeared.
My fingers trembled as I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A simple printed picture.
A parking lot.
A car.
And two people standing beside it.
Daniel.
And another man I didn’t recognize.
But the second piece of paper underneath made my entire body go cold.
It was a document.
A transfer agreement.
With Daniel’s signature.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
I looked closer.
Then I saw the name at the top.
The company account holder.
The person who had received the money.
Not Michael.
Not some stranger.
Someone else.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
I slowly lifted my eyes.
“Daniel…”
His face had gone completely pale.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I held up the paper.
“Why is my father’s name on this document?””
The room exploded into silence.
Daniel froze.
And for the first time that night…
I wasn’t looking at a cheating husband.
I wasn’t looking at a liar.
I was looking at someone who had dragged my own family into a secret I never knew existed.
Daniel whispered:
“Your father wasn’t supposed to be involved.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
He opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
And before he could answer, my phone began ringing.
I looked down.
The caller ID appeared.
My blood turned cold.
Because the person calling me was someone I hadn’t heard from in eleven months.
May you like
Someone who was supposed to be gone.
*Michael Bennett.*
