Chapter 4: The Truth My Family Buried
The phone kept ringing.
*Michael Bennett.*
His name glowed on my screen.
For eleven months, I had believed Michael was a memory.
A chapter from our old life that ended without explanation.
Now his name was appearing again and again, demanding to be answered.
Everyone stared at me.
Daniel looked like he wanted to grab the phone.
But he didn’t move.
Maybe because he knew.
Maybe because he finally understood that he had lost control of the story.
I pressed the answer button.
“Hello?””
For a moment, there was only silence.
Then a voice I hadn’t heard in almost a year spoke.
“Emily?””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Michael?””
I heard him breathe out.
Like he had been waiting eleven months to hear my voice.
“Yes.””
The restaurant disappeared around me.
The voices.
The people.
The questions.
Everything faded.
“Where are you?”” I whispered.
Another pause.
Then:
“Somewhere I should have never had to go.””
My eyes moved toward Daniel.
He looked away.
That hurt.
Because I was starting to realize how much he had hidden.
“Michael,” I said, “I need answers.””
“You deserve them.””
His voice was tired.
“But before I tell you everything, I need you to understand one thing.””
“What?””
“I never betrayed Daniel.””
The words landed heavily.
I looked at my husband.
The man who had let everyone believe his best friend destroyed his career.
“I know,” I whispered.
Michael was quiet.
“You know?””
I looked at Ashley.
Then at the papers in my hand.
“Yes.””
A long breath came through the phone.
“Then Ashley showed you.””
Daniel’s head snapped up.
“You knew?””
I covered the phone.
“Daniel, stop.””
He ignored me.
“How long have you two been talking?””
Michael heard him.
And his voice changed.
“Daniel.””
My husband froze.
“You don’t get to ask questions anymore.””
The confidence in Michael’s voice surprised me.
It wasn’t anger.
It was exhaustion.
The kind that comes after someone has been hurt for too long.
I put the phone back to my ear.
“Michael, tell me what happened.””
He was silent for several seconds.
Then he said:
“Eleven months ago, I found out someone was stealing from Carter Bennett Holdings.””
My eyes moved to the document.
“The money.””
“Yes.””
“Everyone thought it was you.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you defend yourself?””
Michael laughed softly.
A sad sound.
“Because I tried.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
“I tried to tell people.””
He paused.
“But Daniel made sure nobody would listen.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Emily, don’t believe everything he says.””
I turned toward him.
“You had your chance.””
He went quiet.
Michael continued.
“He had already prepared everything before I confronted him.””
“What did he prepare?””
“Evidence.””
The word made my stomach twist.
“He created fake records showing money moving through accounts connected to me.””
I looked down at the document again.
“And my father?””
Michael went silent.
Too long.
“Michael.””
“Emily…”
His voice softened.
“I didn’t want to tell you this over the phone.””
“Tell me.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Your father wasn’t involved in stealing money.””
I exhaled.
Relief came for half a second.
Then he continued.
“But Daniel used your father’s company to move it.””
The relief vanished.
I looked at Daniel.
“What?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily, please.””
I ignored him.
“How?””
Michael answered.
“Your father’s company had access to international accounts. Daniel used that connection because nobody would question it.””
My head spun.
“My father trusted him.””
“I know.””
Michael’s voice became quieter.
“That was the point.””
I closed my eyes.
Memories flooded back.
My father inviting Daniel to family dinners.
My father telling everyone, “That boy has ambition.””
My father helping Daniel when he was starting his company.
My father defending him.
I opened my eyes.
“Why would Daniel do this?””
Nobody answered.
Not even Michael.
Finally, he said:
“Because he was desperate.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Desperate for what?””
Michael didn’t respond immediately.
And somehow, that silence frightened me more.
“Michael.””
“He was about to lose everything.””
Daniel’s expression changed.
Michael continued.
“The company was failing.””
“That’s impossible.””
I shook my head.
“He was promoted.””
“Yes.””
Michael’s voice was bitter.
“That promotion was built on a lie.””
The room became silent.
Daniel’s face tightened.
I looked at him.
“Is that true?””
He didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I felt like I was watching my entire marriage collapse piece by piece.
Not because of one mistake.
Because every brick had been placed by a lie.
I whispered:
“You let me believe you were succeeding.””
Daniel finally spoke.
“I was trying to fix it.””
I looked at him.
“By destroying everyone around you?””
His face fell.
“I didn’t plan for it to happen this way.””
Michael interrupted.
“That’s exactly what he said eleven months ago.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Michael, stop.””
“No.””
The word came sharply.
“You ruined my life because you thought you could clean up your mistake.””
Daniel’s hands shook.
“I was going to fix everything.””
Michael laughed.
“You always say that.””
The anger in his voice finally broke through.
“You said it when you transferred the money.””
I froze.
“You transferred it?””
Daniel looked at me.
Michael continued.
“You said it when you blamed me.””
My heartbeat grew louder.
“You said it when you looked Emily in the eyes and lied.””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Michael.””
“And you said it when you told me nobody would believe me.””
The restaurant was completely silent.
Nobody moved.
Nobody even pretended not to listen.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you threaten him?””
His silence answered.
I felt something inside me go numb.
The man I loved had become someone I didn’t recognize.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Emily, please listen to me.””
I backed away.
“No.””
“Please.””
“No.””
My voice broke.
“You don’t get to say please after eleven months of making decisions for me.””
He stopped.
I looked at him.
“You decided what I knew.””
“You decided what I believed.””
“You decided who was guilty.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“And you decided I wasn’t important enough to know the truth.””
Daniel looked devastated.
But I couldn’t tell if he was hurt by losing me.
Or by losing control.
Michael spoke again.
“Emily.””
I looked at the phone.
“There’s one more thing.””
I almost laughed.
Of course there was.
There was always something else.
“What?””
“You need to check your house.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“My house?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Michael hesitated.
“Because Daniel didn’t just hide documents at work.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What are you saying?””
“I’m saying the evidence you need might still be there.””
Daniel suddenly moved.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He looked like he had accidentally revealed something.
My heart stopped.
“What did you just say?””
Daniel looked away.
“Nothing.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You said no.””
He swallowed.
“You don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Then explain.””
He didn’t.
And that was when I knew.
Whatever was hidden in my house…
He was afraid I would find it.
I grabbed my purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Daniel reached for me.
“Emily.””
I pulled away.
“Don’t touch me.””
His face broke.
“Please.””
I looked at him one last time.
“I spent eleven months wondering what I did wrong.””
My voice trembled.
“I blamed myself.””
A tear fell.
“I thought maybe I wasn’t supportive enough.””
I shook my head.
“But the truth is…”
I looked around the room.
“At some point, I was the only honest person in this marriage.””
Nobody spoke.
I turned and walked toward the door.
Behind me, Daniel called my name.
But I didn’t stop.
Not until I reached the parking lot.
Not until my phone rang again.
I looked down.
It wasn’t Michael.
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was my father.
I answered immediately.
“Dad?””
His voice was shaking.
“Emily…”
Something in his tone made me stop walking.
“What happened?””
There was silence.
Then my father whispered:
“Where did you find that document?””
My blood ran cold.
“Dad, what do you mean?””
Another pause.
May you like
Then he said the one sentence I never expected to hear.
“Because Daniel wasn’t the only person who betrayed you.””
