Chapter 5: The Secret Inside My Own Home

My father’s words followed me all the way home.

“Because Daniel wasn’t the only person who betrayed you.””

I sat in my car with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

The engine was off.

The street was quiet.

But my mind was louder than it had ever been.

Daniel.

Michael.

The missing money.

The document with my father’s name.

And now this.

My father knew something.

Something he had hidden from me.

I called him back immediately.

He answered after one ring.

“Emily.””

His voice sounded different.

Older.

Tired.

“Dad, what did you mean?””

There was a long pause.

I heard him breathe.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

My stomach tightened.

“Find out what?””

Another silence.

“Are you alone?””

I looked around my car.

“Yes.””

“Good.””

That one word scared me.

“Dad.””

“Emily, listen carefully. Do not go back inside the house.””

I froze.

“What?””

“Stay somewhere else tonight.””

“Why?””

“Because if Daniel knows you have that document, he knows what you might find.””

My heart started racing.

“How do you know Daniel knows?””

My father didn’t answer.

And that silence was enough.

“Dad.””

His voice became softer.

“I’m sorry.””

Those two words hurt more than anger.

Because my father never apologized unless he had already admitted something was wrong.

“Tell me the truth.””

He exhaled.

“Eleven months ago, Daniel came to me.””

I closed my eyes.

“About the money?””

“Yes.””

I felt sick.

“What did he say?””

“He said Michael was stealing from the company.””

I laughed bitterly.

“So you believed him?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

“No?””

“No, Emily.””

My father’s voice shook.

“I didn’t believe him.””

I sat up straighter.

“Then why did you help him?””

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Finally, he said:

“Because I thought I was protecting you.””

I stared through the windshield.

“What does that mean?””

“Daniel told me if the truth came out, you would lose everything.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My marriage?””

“More than that.””

“What?””

My father hesitated.

“The house.””

I stopped breathing.

“What about the house?””

“Emily…”

“Dad, tell me.””

He swallowed.

“Your house was used as collateral.””

The words didn’t make sense.

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

I shook my head even though he couldn’t see me.

“Daniel and I bought that house together.””

“Yes.””

“So how could he—”

“He used your name.””

I went completely still.

My father continued.

“He needed approval for a loan. The company was in trouble. He told me it was temporary.””

I whispered:

“You signed something.””

“Yes.””

The betrayal hit differently.

Not like Daniel’s.

Daniel’s betrayal was expected now.

But my father?

The person who taught me never to ignore red flags.

The person who told me I deserved honesty.

“You knew.””

“I thought I was fixing it.””

I closed my eyes.

Everyone kept saying the same thing.

Fixing it.

Fixing it.

Fixing it.

But all they had done was bury the damage deeper.

“Dad, what did you sign?””

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I signed documents Daniel gave me.””

My hands trembled.

“Without reading them?””

“I trusted him.””

The irony was painful.

My father trusted the man I married.

I trusted my father.

And Daniel had used all of that.

“Where are the documents?””

Another pause.

Then:

“Some are in the house.””

My heart stopped.

“Where?””

“In Daniel’s office.””

I immediately remembered the small room at the back of our house.

The room Daniel had called his workspace.

The room I was never allowed to enter anymore.

“Why would he keep them there?””

“Because he thought nobody would look.””

I stared ahead.

Then I realized something.

The house wasn’t just where I lived.

It was where Daniel had hidden the truth.

“Dad.””

“Yes?””

“I’m going there.””

“No.””

“I need answers.””

“Emily, listen to me.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I spent eleven months asking questions nobody wanted to answer.””

I started the car.

“Tonight, I’m getting them myself.””

When I arrived home, the first thing I noticed was the darkness.

Usually, the porch light was on.

Daniel always left it on.

A small habit from when we first moved in.

He used to say he wanted me to feel like I was coming home.

Now the house looked like a stranger’s place.

I sat in the driveway for several minutes.

Part of me expected Daniel to appear.

To explain.

To apologize.

To tell me there was some misunderstanding.

But nobody came.

I grabbed my purse and walked inside.

The door opened easily.

Too easily.

I stopped.

Because I knew I had locked it.

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Hello?””

No answer.

I stepped inside.

The house smelled the same.

The same candles.

The same wooden floors.

The same kitchen where we danced years ago.

But everything felt different.

Like the walls knew something I didn’t.

I walked toward Daniel’s office.

The door was closed.

I reached for the handle.

Locked.

Of course.

I almost smiled.

Even now.

Even here.

He was still hiding things.

I went to the drawer beside the entrance.

The place where we kept spare keys.

The spare office key was gone.

My heart sank.

Someone had taken it.

I stepped back.

Then I heard something.

A noise upstairs.

A floorboard creaking.

I froze.

“Daniel?””

No answer.

Slowly, I reached for my phone.

I turned on the flashlight.

The sound came again.

From our bedroom.

I walked upstairs.

Each step felt heavier.

When I reached the hallway, I saw it.

The bedroom door was slightly open.

I knew I had closed it.

“Who’s there?””

Silence.

Then the door moved.

A person stepped out.

And I nearly dropped my phone.

Because it wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t a stranger.

It was someone I knew.

Someone who had been sitting at that dinner table.

Someone who had cried while revealing Daniel’s secrets.

Ashley.

“What are you doing here?”” I asked.

Her face was pale.

“I was going to ask you the same thing.””

I stared at her.

“You broke into my house?””

“No.””

“Then how did you get inside?””

She looked away.

That answer told me enough.

“Ashley.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I have to show you something.””

I laughed once.

“Do you people have a rule?””

“What?””

“Do you all wait until my life is falling apart before telling me the truth?””

She looked hurt.

“I deserve that.””

“Yes.””

She nodded.

“I do.””

That surprised me.

Ashley wasn’t defending herself.

She wasn’t making excuses.

She looked guilty.

“Why are you here?””

She reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“I found this.””

I didn’t take it.

“Where?””

“In Daniel’s office.””

My eyes narrowed.

“You were in there?””

She nodded.

“After he left the restaurant.””

My stomach tightened.

“What was on it?””

She looked toward the office door.

“Everything.””

The word hung in the air.

“What does that mean?””

Ashley stepped closer.

“Records. Messages. Conversations.””

She lowered her voice.

“Proof.””

I looked at the flash drive.

Then at her.

“Why are you helping me?””

For the first time, Ashley looked completely broken.

“Because I was stupid.””

I waited.

“I thought Daniel needed help.””

Her voice cracked.

“I thought he was trying to save his company.””

“And?””

“And then I realized he wasn’t trying to save anything.””

She looked at me.

“He was trying to make sure nobody could stop him.””

I took the flash drive.

My fingers touched the plastic.

A tiny object.

But it felt heavier than the divorce papers.

I walked toward Daniel’s office.

Ashley followed.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

“What?””

She looked terrified.

“There’s something else.””

I turned around.

“What now?””

Her voice dropped.

“Daniel didn’t hide the evidence because he was afraid you’d find out about the money.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

Ashley looked at the locked office door.

“Because the money isn’t the worst thing he did.””

My heartbeat slowed.

“What’s worse?””

Ashley swallowed.

Then she whispered:

“Emily…”

She looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“The night Michael disappeared…”

A pause.

“The person Daniel was trying to silence wasn’t Michael.””

I felt the air leave my lungs.

“Then who?””

Ashley looked at the office door.

May you like

And said:

“You.””
