Chapter 8: The Parents Who Chose My Future Without Me
For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.
My mother’s voice was still on the phone.
But everything else disappeared.
The house.
The laptop.
Ashley standing across from me.
The documents scattered across the desk.
All I could hear was one sentence.
*Your father and I knew before you married him.*
I closed my eyes.
“No.””
My mother whispered my name.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You knew?””
Silence.
That was all the answer I needed.
I stood up so quickly the chair scraped against the floor.
“You knew?””
Ashley watched me carefully.
She didn’t interrupt.
She didn’t try to comfort me.
Maybe because she understood.
There were some betrayals too big for comfort.
“Mom,” I said again, quieter this time.
“How long?””
She started crying.
And somehow, hearing her cry made me angrier.
Because I had cried alone.
For eleven months.
While everyone around me knew pieces of the truth.
“Mom. How long did you know?””
“Before the wedding.””
The words hit me harder than I expected.
Before the wedding.
Before I walked down the aisle.
Before I promised forever.
Before I looked at Daniel and believed I was the luckiest woman alive.
My mother had known.
My father had known.
And they said nothing.
I walked toward the window.
“Why?””
My mother breathed shakily.
“We thought we were protecting you.””
I laughed.
A cold, empty laugh.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“Emily…”
“No.””
I wiped my face.
“Daniel said he was protecting me. Dad said he was protecting me. Now you’re saying it too.””
My voice grew louder.
“When did protecting me become making choices behind my back?””
My mother didn’t answer.
Because there was no answer.
I looked at Ashley.
She looked down.
Even she knew.
Everyone knew except me.
“What did you know?”” I asked.
My mother was quiet.
Then she said:
“We knew Daniel needed your father’s help.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me the truth.””
She sighed.
“Daniel approached your father before you got engaged.””
My stomach tightened.
“So before he proposed?””
“Yes.””
The room felt colder.
“What did he want?””
My mother hesitated.
“An investment.””
I looked at the laptop.
The files.
The evidence.
The proof that my marriage had started with a business plan.
“And you agreed?””
“Your father did.””
“Why?””
“Because he thought Daniel was ambitious.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My mother went silent.
“He thought Daniel was a good man.””
That hurt.
Because my parents had always been careful.
They questioned every person I dated.
They warned me about every red flag.
But when it came to Daniel…
They opened the door.
“Did you know he was using me?””
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
I noticed.
“You’re lying.””
“I’m not.””
“You are.””
My voice became softer.
“You knew enough.””
My mother started crying again.
“We knew he had problems.””
“What kind of problems?””
A long pause.
Then:
“Debt.””
I looked at Ashley.
She looked shocked.
My mother continued.
“Daniel told us he was struggling. He said once the company stabilized, everything would be fine.””
“And you thought marrying me would fix him?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
My mother’s voice broke.
“We thought loving you would change him.””
I stared at the phone.
That sentence hurt in a way I didn’t expect.
Because it sounded so familiar.
I had thought the same thing.
I thought love could change him.
The difference was…
I didn’t know I was being used.
My mother did.
“Did you ever ask me what I wanted?””
“Emily…”
“No.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Did you ever sit me down and say, ‘Your future husband has financial problems and might be hiding things’?””
“No.””
“Did you ever tell me there were documents with my name on them?””
“No.””
“Did you ever give me a choice?””
Silence.
“No.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
I ended the call.
Not because I hated my mother.
Because I couldn’t hear another excuse.
I placed my phone on the table.
Ashley spoke quietly.
“Are you okay?””
I looked at her.
“No.””
She nodded.
“That makes sense.””
I almost smiled.
Almost.
“You’re the first person tonight who didn’t tell me I’d understand later.””
Ashley looked sad.
“I spent eleven months telling myself that too.””
“What?””
“That you would understand.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
She looked at the floor.
“I knew about the money.””
My chest tightened.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“Because I helped Daniel prepare some of the documents.””
I stepped back.
The anger returned.
“You helped him?””
Ashley closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
“Then why should I believe anything you say?””
“Because I’m not proud of it.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought I was helping someone I respected.””
She looked at me.
“I thought he was desperate.””
“And now?””
“Now I know he was dangerous.””
That word stayed between us.
Dangerous.
Not because Daniel was violent.
Not because he screamed.
Because he controlled.
He manipulated.
He built lies so carefully that everyone around him became part of them.
I looked back at the laptop.
“We need to find everything.””
Ashley nodded.
“There’s one more file.””
“What file?””
She pointed to the screen.
“The one Daniel probably didn’t want anyone opening.””
I clicked.
A folder appeared.
*WEDDING.*
My heart sank.
“No.””
Ashley looked at me.
“Emily…”
I opened it.
Inside were photos.
Our wedding.
Our honeymoon.
Our first house.
Our first anniversary.
For a moment, I thought maybe this was different.
Maybe there was still something real.
Then I saw the documents underneath.
A timeline.
Dates.
Notes.
Plans.
I clicked the first file.
It was a spreadsheet.
At the top:
*Relationship Development Timeline.*
My hands went cold.
Relationship development?
Not memories.
Not milestones.
A timeline.
Like a business strategy.
The first entry:
*Meeting Emily — establish trust.*
The second:
*Introduce family connection.*
The third:
*Secure investment opportunity.*
I couldn’t breathe.
Ashley covered her mouth.
“Oh my God.””
I kept scrolling.
*Engagement — increase family confidence.*
*Marriage — finalize financial access.*
I closed the laptop.
Immediately.
“No.””
Ashley looked at me.
“Emily.””
“No.””
I stood.
“I can’t.””
My voice broke.
“I can’t read another word.””
Because suddenly every beautiful moment had become a question.
Every kiss.
Every promise.
Every “I love you.””
Was it real?
Or was it just another step in his plan?
My phone buzzed.
I looked down.
A message.
From Daniel.
*I know you’re with Ashley.*
My heart stopped.
Another message appeared.
*Please don’t trust her.*
Then another.
*She’s the reason Michael found out.*
I stared.
Ashley saw my face.
“What?””
I showed her the phone.
Her expression changed.
“No.””
“What?””
She shook her head.
“That’s not true.””
“Then why would he say it?””
“Because he’s trying to turn you against me.””
The phone buzzed again.
A final message.
*Ask Ashley what happened the night Michael disappeared. Ask her why she was really there.*
I looked at Ashley.
Her face had gone pale.
And this time…
She didn’t deny it.
“Ashley?””
She slowly sat down.
“I need to tell you something.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
She looked at me.
“I wasn’t just Daniel’s assistant that night.””
The room went silent.
“I was there because Daniel asked me to come.””
“Why?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because he needed someone to help him convince Michael.””
“Convince him to do what?””
Ashley looked away.
Then whispered:
“To take the blame.””
My blood ran cold.
“And did he?””
“No.””
“Then what happened?””
Ashley’s hands started shaking.
“I don’t know everything.””
I stared at her.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“I know.””
She took a breath.
“But there is one thing I know.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“The reason Michael survived.””
I froze.
“Survived?””
Ashley nodded.
“He wasn’t supposed to walk away from that parking garage.””
The room went completely still.
I whispered:
“What did Daniel do?””
Ashley looked at the floor.
And before she answered, the front door downstairs slammed shut.
We both froze.
A familiar voice echoed through the house.
“Emily?””
Daniel.
He was home.
Ashley stood immediately.
“Lock the door.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Her face was terrified.
“Emily.””
The footsteps moved closer.
“He didn’t come here to explain.””
The footsteps stopped at the bottom of the stairs.
Ashley whispered:
“He came here because he knows what you found.””
And then Daniel called my name.
“Emily.””
A pause.
Then:
“Open the door.””
I looked at Ashley.
May you like
She looked at me.
And for the first time that night, we were both afraid of the same person.
