Chapter 8: The Secret Before Ethan
The woman’s voice stayed in my ear long after she stopped speaking.
“There was another person before Ethan.””
I stood in the middle of my living room, unable to move.
The apartment was silent.
Too silent.
A few hours ago, this place had been where Adrian and I planned our future.
Now it felt like a crime scene.
Every object seemed to hold a question.
Every memory seemed to have a hidden meaning.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
The woman took a breath.
“My name is Clara.””
“Clara what?””
There was a pause.
“Clara Whitmore.””
The name meant nothing to me.
And somehow, that scared me.
Because I had spent three years believing I knew everyone important in Adrian’s life.
Apparently, I didn’t.
“How do you know Adrian?””
“I worked with his family.””
“Where?””
“At their company.””
I sat down slowly.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because I saw what happened tonight.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“What do you mean?””
“I saw Adrian leave the hotel.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“You were there?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I knew something like this might happen.””
I stared at the phone.
“What does that mean?””
Clara was quiet.
Then she said:
“Amara, Adrian has spent years running from the truth about himself.””
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Another person.
Another secret.
Another version of Adrian I didn’t know.
“Did he lie to me?””
Her answer came immediately.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“About what?””
“About how long he has been struggling.””
I looked toward the door.
The door Adrian had walked out of only minutes earlier.
“How long?””
Clara sighed.
“Before Ethan.””
I felt a chill.
“Who was before Ethan?””
The silence stretched.
Then:
“His name was Lucas.””
I repeated the name quietly.
“Lucas.””
“Yes.””
“What was he?””
Clara hesitated.
“Someone who knew Adrian before anyone else did.””
I stood.
“Was he another relationship?””
“Yes.””
The word felt like a punch.
Another relationship.
Another person.
Another part of his life hidden from me.
“How many people are there, Clara?””
Her voice softened.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed quietly.
It wasn’t because anything was funny.
It was because my brain couldn’t process another revelation.
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“No.””
I wiped my face.
“Don’t apologize.””
“Amara—”
“I need to know.””
And I did.
I needed to know everything.
Even if every answer hurt.
“Tell me about Lucas.””
Clara was quiet for several seconds.
Then she began.
“Lucas was Adrian’s first serious relationship.””
“When?””
“College.””
I closed my eyes.
College.
A time in his life I knew stories about.
But apparently not the important ones.
“Did Adrian’s family know?””
“No.””
“Did anyone know?””
“Very few people.””
“Why are you telling me?””
“Because I believe you deserve to understand the pattern.””
The word bothered me.
Pattern.
“What pattern?””
“That Adrian doesn’t just hide relationships.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does he hide?””
“The parts of himself he thinks will disappoint people.””
I sat back down.
I thought about Adrian.
The man who always apologized when he raised his voice.
The man who hated disappointing anyone.
The man who would rather suffer quietly than admit he needed help.
For a moment, I almost felt sorry for him.
Then I remembered the ring on my finger.
The wedding invitations.
The vows I had written.
And I remembered that his pain had become mine without my permission.
“What happened to Lucas?””
Clara answered carefully.
“He left.””
“Because of Adrian?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian promised him things he couldn’t keep.””
My heart sank.
“What things?””
“That one day he would stop hiding.””
I looked down.
The words sounded familiar.
Almost too familiar.
Because hadn’t Adrian done the same thing with me?
Promised a future.
Asked me to trust him.
While keeping the parts of himself locked away.
“Where is Lucas now?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then how do you know all of this?””
Clara hesitated.
“I was there when it happened.””
“How?””
She sighed.
“Because I was Adrian’s therapist.””
The room went still.
“You were his therapist?””
“Yes.””
“Then why are you contacting me?””
“Because I stopped being his therapist years ago.””
“Why?””
Her voice became quiet.
“Because he stopped telling the truth.””
The words hit me.
“What do you mean?””
“Therapy only works when someone is willing to be honest.””
I looked at the floor.
“And Adrian wasn’t?””
“Not completely.””
I didn’t know what to say.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t just dealing with a hidden relationship.
I was dealing with years of avoidance.
Years of someone choosing silence over honesty.
“Did he ever love me?””
Clara didn’t answer immediately.
That pause hurt.
“I believe he did.””
I swallowed.
“But?””
“But love and readiness are different things.””
My eyes filled.
Because that was the sentence nobody had said yet.
Not Monique.
Not Ethan.
Not Adrian.
Maybe that was the truth I had been avoiding.
Maybe Adrian loved me.
Maybe Ethan mattered.
Maybe both things could exist.
And maybe that was exactly why it hurt so much.
“Did he plan to marry me knowing all this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Clara’s voice became softer.
“Because he believed marriage would force him to become the person he wanted to be.””
I stared at my ring.
“That’s not fair.””
“No.””
“It’s not fair to me.””
“No.””
“Then why did everyone keep protecting him?””
There was silence.
Then Clara said:
“Because everyone saw his fear.””
I looked around the apartment.
“And nobody saw mine.””
Clara didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
After we ended the call, I sat there for almost an hour.
No crying.
No anger.
Just silence.
Sometimes the biggest heartbreak isn’t finding out someone lied.
It’s realizing how many people knew they were lying and still let you walk toward the damage.
My phone buzzed.
I expected Adrian.
It wasn’t.
It was Ethan.
*Can we meet tomorrow? There is something I should have told you before Adrian did.*
I stared at the message.
I almost ignored it.
I almost threw my phone away.
But I knew better now.
Secrets didn’t disappear because I refused to look at them.
I replied:
*Where?*
His answer came quickly.
*The café where Adrian and I first met.*
I froze.
Because I knew that place.
Adrian had taken me there on our second date.
He told me it was his favorite café.
He told me it was where he went when he needed to think.
I suddenly wondered if that story belonged to him…
or someone else.
The next morning, I arrived early.
I sat in the corner, watching people come and go.
Couples laughing.
Friends talking.
People living ordinary lives.
I wondered what it felt like to have an ordinary relationship.
One without hidden chapters.
One without unexpected names appearing every few hours.
Then Ethan walked in.
He looked tired.
Older than his age.
Like carrying the past had changed him.
He sat across from me.
“Thank you for meeting me.””
I nodded.
“Just tell me.””
He looked down.
“I owe you an apology.””
“For what?””
“For waiting this long.””
I stared at him.
“You could have told me before the wedding?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you?””
His eyes moved toward the window.
“Because I loved Adrian.””
I didn’t expect that answer.
“What?””
He looked back at me.
“Even after everything, I loved him.””
I stayed silent.
“And part of me hoped he would finally tell you himself.””
“Did you think he would?””
“No.””
The honesty was immediate.
“Then why wait?””
Ethan took a breath.
“Because I wanted to believe he could choose honesty without being forced.””
I looked away.
“That sounds familiar.””
He nodded.
“Because it’s who Adrian is.””
Then he reached into his bag.
He placed a small envelope on the table.
Not another document.
Not another screenshot.
Something older.
Something personal.
“What is that?””
Ethan looked at me.
“This is the last thing Adrian wrote to me before he ended our relationship.””
My fingers touched the envelope.
“Why are you giving it to me?””
“Because there is one thing Adrian never told you.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Ethan’s eyes became serious.
“He didn’t leave me because he stopped loving me.””
The café noise faded.
“He left me because someone threatened to expose him.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Ethan leaned closer.
And whispered:
“The person who threatened him was not his family.””
My breath caught.
“Then who?””
Ethan looked directly at me.
“Your fiancé’s biggest secret has nothing to do with who he loved.””
I waited.
“Then what is it?””
Ethan pushed the envelope toward me.
“It’s what he did to protect that secret.””
I looked down at the envelope.
And for the first time, I felt something stronger than heartbreak.
Fear.
Because maybe the question was never:
*Who was Adrian hiding?*
May you like
Maybe the real question was:
*What was Adrian willing to do to keep everyone from finding out?*
