Chapter 6: The Call That Changed The Timeline
The photo on my phone felt heavier than it should have.
It was only an image.
A few pixels.
A frozen moment from three years ago.
But somehow, it carried more weight than every promise Adrian had ever made me.
Because the date was right there.
The date that was supposed to belong to us.
The date he told me he was falling in love with me.
The date I remembered as the beginning of something beautiful.
Now it looked like the beginning of something I never understood.
I slowly placed the phone on the table.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The silence was unbearable.
“Amara…”
Adrian’s voice was barely above a whisper.
I looked at him.
“Did you call him?””
His face changed.
A tiny movement.
A pause.
A hesitation.
That was my answer before he even spoke.
“Yes.””
My chest tightened.
“When?””
He looked down.
“That night.””
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because I didn’t know what else to do.
“The night you told me you were falling in love with me?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I stared at him.
“You called him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because after everything, after the secrets, after the lies, after the years of hiding…
he still needed time to find the answer.
“Tell me.””
He looked at me.
“I needed to say goodbye.””
The words landed softly.
Almost gently.
But they cut deep.
“Goodbye?””
“Yes.””
“To someone you loved?””
His eyes filled.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
Monique lowered her head.
She didn’t look surprised.
That somehow made it worse.
“You knew.””
My voice was directed at her.
Monique looked up.
“Not everything.””
“But you knew he called Ethan.””
“I knew they spoke.””
“When?””
“After you started dating.””
I stood up.
“So everyone knew except me?””
“No.””
Monique immediately shook her head.
“Not everyone.””
“It feels like everyone.””
Adrian stood too.
“Amara, listen—”
“No.””
I held up my hand.
“Just stop.””
He stopped.
And for once, I saw him understand that he couldn’t fix this with a soft voice.
He couldn’t hug me.
He couldn’t tell me everything would be okay.
Because he was the reason it wasn’t.
“I need to understand something.””
Adrian nodded.
“Okay.””
“When you called Ethan that night, what did you say?””
He looked at the floor.
“I told him I was getting married.””
My stomach turned.
“And?””
“He asked if I was sure.””
“And what did you say?””
Adrian swallowed.
“I said yes.””
I stared at him.
“You said yes.””
“Yes.””
“Then why does it feel like you weren’t sure?””
His silence answered.
I turned away.
The apartment suddenly felt too small.
I walked toward the kitchen, needing distance.
Needing something normal.
A glass of water.
A familiar action.
Something that didn’t involve secrets.
But even there, memories followed me.
The mug Adrian bought me because he said my old one was ugly.
The grocery list on the fridge.
The picture of us from our first vacation.
Every corner had a version of Adrian.
A version I missed.
A version I wasn’t sure existed.
“Amara.””
I heard him behind me.
I didn’t turn around.
“Did you ever love me?””
The question came out quietly.
Adrian froze.
“Yes.””
“Don’t answer too fast.””
“I’m not.””
“Because I need the truth.””
He stepped closer.
“I love you.””
I closed my eyes.
“Then why did you hide?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I thought if I told you everything, I would lose you.””
I turned around.
“You made that decision for me.””
“I know.””
“You decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
“I was afraid.””
“You keep saying that.””
“Because it’s true.””
I looked at him.
“And what about me?””
He went quiet.
“What about what I was afraid of?””
His face changed.
“What do you mean?””
“I was afraid of marrying the wrong person.””
The words hurt both of us.
But they needed to exist.
“I was afraid of waking up years from now and realizing my entire marriage was based on something I never agreed to.””
Adrian looked devastated.
“I never wanted that.””
“But it happened.””
He looked down.
“Yes.””
The honesty was painful.
But necessary.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, neither of us reacted immediately.
We were all tired of surprises.
I picked it up.
Another message.
From Ethan.
*You deserve to know the whole story. Not just the parts Adrian can explain.*
Below it was another photo.
I opened it.
My breath caught.
It was a picture of Adrian and Ethan sitting outside a hospital.
Adrian looked younger.
Broken.
Like someone who had just lost something important.
The date was two years before I met him.
Before me.
Before our relationship.
I frowned.
“What is this?””
Adrian looked at the screen.
His face changed.
Immediately.
“You shouldn’t have sent that.””
I looked at him.
“You know this picture?””
“Yes.””
“Why were you at a hospital?””
He didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
He sat down slowly.
“It was after Ethan’s accident.””
My eyebrows pulled together.
“Accident?””
“He was injured.””
“How badly?””
Adrian looked away.
“Bad enough that I thought I was going to lose him.””
The room became quiet again.
I realized something.
The story I had been given was incomplete.
Not by one person.
By everyone.
“What happened between you two?”” I asked.
Adrian rubbed his face.
“We were together for almost two years.””
“I know.””
“But our relationship was complicated.””
“How?””
He hesitated.
“Because I was always afraid of what would happen if people knew.””
I listened.
“Ethan got tired of waiting.””
His voice became softer.
“He wanted a real relationship. He wanted me to stop hiding him.””
“And you didn’t.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because I thought I could separate my life.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“My family. My work. My relationship.””
He looked at me.
“I thought I could keep everything in different boxes.””
“And Ethan?””
“He was the box I kept hidden.””
The honesty was brutal.
“And then?””
“Then he got tired.””
Adrian looked at the floor.
“He told me he couldn’t spend his life being someone’s secret.””
I felt something shift.
Because suddenly, I understood why Ethan was angry.
Not because Adrian had moved on.
Because Adrian had never truly let him exist.
“When did you end things?””
“After the accident.””
“Why?””
“Because he told me he didn’t want to keep fighting for someone who wouldn’t fight for him.””
I looked at Adrian.
“And then you met me.””
“Yes.””
“Did you love me when you met me?””
His answer came slower this time.
“Yes.””
“But?””
He closed his eyes.
“But I was still carrying things I hadn’t dealt with.””
The truth hurt.
But maybe because it finally sounded like the truth.
For the first time that night, Adrian wasn’t trying to make himself look better.
He was just admitting he was flawed.
And somehow, that made everything harder.
Because I couldn’t simply hate him.
I could only decide whether I could forgive him.
A knock suddenly came from the door.
All three of us froze.
Another knock.
Louder.
Adrian looked confused.
“Were you expecting someone?””
“No.””
Monique stood.
“Who would come this late?””
Nobody answered.
I walked toward the door.
Adrian immediately stepped forward.
“Wait.””
“Why?””
His face turned pale.
“I don’t know.””
That was not comforting.
I looked through the peephole.
At first, I saw only darkness.
Then someone stepped closer.
My breath stopped.
Because I recognized him.
Not personally.
But from the photos.
From the messages.
From the name that had been haunting me all night.
I slowly opened the door.
A man stood outside.
His eyes moved from me…
to Adrian.
Then back to me.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
His voice was shaking.
“I know I’m the last person you want to see.””
Adrian stood behind me.
“Ethan.””
Ethan looked at him.
And the pain on his face told me one thing.
This wasn’t a simple love triangle.
This was a story with years of unfinished damage.
Then Ethan looked at me and said:
“Amara, there’s something Adrian never told you.””
I held my breath.
“What?””
Ethan’s eyes moved to the engagement ring on my finger.
“He didn’t propose to you because he was finally ready to move on.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Ethan, don’t.””
But Ethan continued.
“He proposed because that was the day he found out I was going to tell his family the truth.””
The room went silent.
My fingers tightened around the door.
“What truth?””
Ethan looked at Adrian.
Then at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“The truth about why Adrian really left me.””
