Chapter 2: The Message He Never Wanted Me To Read

I stared at the folded piece of paper in Monique’s hand like it was something dangerous.

Maybe because it was.

Some things don’t need to explode to destroy your life.

Sometimes all it takes is a few words written by someone you trusted.

“Where did you get that?”” I asked.

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Monique looked toward the ballroom again.

The place where my fiancé was waiting.

The place where everyone thought we were celebrating the beginning of our forever.

“I found it in Adrian’s apartment.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“You went through his things?””

Her jaw tightened.

“I wasn’t searching for something to hurt him with.””

“Then why were you there?””

She looked away.

“Because he asked me to help him move some boxes.””

The answer should have calmed me.

It didn’t.

“Monique…”

“I saw his old laptop.””

My heart sank.

“What does that have to do with this?””

“Everything.””

She placed the paper in my hand.

“I saw a message notification.””

I looked down at the folded page.

“You printed it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew if I told you without proof, you would think I was lying.””

The words stung because she was right.

A part of me already wanted to believe she was lying.

I wanted that.

I needed that.

Because the alternative meant I had spent three years loving a version of Adrian that didn’t exist.

I slowly unfolded the paper.

At first, I didn’t understand what I was looking at.

It wasn’t a confession.

It wasn’t some dramatic love letter.

It was a screenshot of a conversation.

A name appeared at the top.

*Ethan.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

The messages were short.

Too short.

Like two people who already understood everything without needing to explain.

*Ethan: You can’t keep doing this.*

*Adrian: I know.*

*Ethan: Then tell her.*

*Adrian: I can’t.*

*Ethan: She deserves the truth.*

*Adrian: You don’t understand.*

*Ethan: I understand exactly what’s happening. You’re choosing a wedding over honesty.*

My vision blurred.

I read the last message again.

And again.

“You don’t understand.””

Those were Adrian’s words.

Not Monique’s.

Not a stranger’s.

His.

“Who is Ethan?”” I whispered.

Monique didn’t answer immediately.

That silence told me enough.

“Who is he?””

She lowered her eyes.

“I don’t know everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“I know he was important to Adrian.””

The paper shook slightly in my hand.

“How important?””

Monique looked at me.

“Important enough that Adrian hid him.””

I swallowed.

The garden suddenly felt too small.

Too cold.

I folded the paper back up.

“No.””

Monique’s face softened.

“Amara.””

“No.””

I handed the paper back.

“I’m not doing this here.””

“Where are you going?””

“To talk to my fiancé.””

Her eyes widened.

“Not yet.””

I stopped.

“Why not?””

“Because you need to think.””

“I’ve been thinking for three years.””

“You’ve been trusting him for three years.””

The sentence landed heavily.

I hated that it made sense.

Monique stepped closer.

“If you confront him right now, he’ll have time to control the story.””

I looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

“It means Adrian is good at making people see what he wants them to see.””

A memory flashed through my mind.

The first time I met Adrian.

A crowded coffee shop.

A spilled drink.

A stranger apologizing.

Adrian had laughed, bought me another coffee, and told me that accidents were just “life forcing people to meet.””

I thought it was charming.

Now I wondered if I had mistaken charm for something else.

Manipulation.

“No,” I whispered.

Monique reached for my hand.

“Amara, I know this hurts.””

“You don’t know me.””

“No.””

She paused.

“But I know my brother.””

That was the first time she sounded afraid.

Not angry.

Not judgmental.

Afraid.

“He has spent years trying to keep everyone happy.””

I looked at her.

“And I’m supposed to feel sorry for him?””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m saying you need to understand something. People can be scared. They can be confused. They can struggle with who they are.””

Her voice lowered.

“But fear does not excuse using another person.””

The sentence stayed with me.

Because that was the question I couldn’t escape.

Not who Adrian loved.

Not what he wanted.

Not what secret he was hiding.

The question was whether he had looked me in the eyes every day and let me build a future based on a lie.

A sound came from behind us.

“Amara?””

My entire body froze.

Adrian.

I turned around slowly.

He stood near the garden entrance, his hands in his suit pockets.

The same suit I had chosen with him two weeks ago.

The same smile I had fallen in love with.

“There you are,” he said.

His eyes moved between me and Monique.

A small change happened in his expression.

So small most people would have missed it.

But I didn’t.

The smile disappeared for half a second.

Then it came back.

“Everything okay?””

I looked at him.

The man I was supposed to marry.

The man who had held me while promising me forever.

The man whose messages were still burning in my mind.

“I was just talking with Monique.””

Adrian smiled.

“About what?””

My mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Because suddenly, I understood what Monique meant.

He was watching.

Waiting.

Trying to understand how much I knew.

Monique answered before I could.

“About family.””

Adrian looked at his sister.

Something passed between them.

Something old.

Something I wasn’t part of.

“Well,” he said, forcing a laugh, “I hope you two weren’t planning my funeral out here.””

Normally, I would have laughed.

Normally, I would have pushed his shoulder and told him he was being dramatic.

But now I just stared.

“Why would you say that?””

The question slipped out.

Adrian’s smile faded slightly.

“What?””

“Why would you joke about your funeral?””

He looked confused.

“I was kidding.””

“Right.””

A strange silence followed.

Adrian stepped closer.

“Amara, are you okay?””

There it was.

The concern.

The gentle voice.

The exact thing that always made me feel safe.

And somehow, that made everything worse.

“I’m fine.””

He studied my face.

“No, you’re not.””

I looked away.

“I just need some air.””

“Did Monique say something?””

The question came too quickly.

Too directly.

My eyes snapped back to him.

“Why would you ask that?””

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

“I mean, you two have never really talked alone before.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

For the first time in three years, Adrian looked uncomfortable around me.

Not guilty.

Not yet.

But uncomfortable.

“I’m just wondering.””

“Why?””

“Because my sister can be intense.””

Monique laughed quietly.

It wasn’t a happy laugh.

“Interesting.””

Adrian looked at her.

“What?””

“You always say that when someone gets too close to the truth.””

The air changed.

Adrian’s face hardened.

“Monique.””

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

Almost too calm.

“I’m done protecting you.””

My heart raced.

“Protecting him from what?”” I asked.

Neither of them answered.

That silence was louder than any confession.

Adrian looked at me.

“Amara, can we talk privately?””

I stared at him.

The old me would have followed immediately.

The old me trusted him more than anyone.

But that woman had disappeared somewhere between a folded piece of paper and a name I had never heard before.

“About what?””

His jaw tightened.

“About whatever my sister told you.””

My stomach dropped.

Because he knew.

He knew exactly what this was about.

I hadn’t said anything.

Monique hadn’t said anything.

But Adrian already knew.

“How do you know she told me something?””

He froze.

Only for a moment.

But I saw it.

The panic.

The fear.

The realization that he had revealed too much.

“I…”

He looked away.

And that was the moment something inside me broke.

Because for the first time, I wasn’t looking at the man I loved.

I was looking at someone trying to decide what version of the truth he could survive.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

And immediately turned pale.

I noticed the name before he could hide it.

*Ethan.*

Adrian rejected the call.

Too late.

I had already seen it.

He looked back at me.

“Amara…”

I took a step away.

“Who is Ethan?””

The question hung between us.

Adrian didn’t answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

May you like

Because after three years together, after a promise of forever, after a wedding only days away…

my fiancé looked at me like he had finally run out of places to hide.
