Chapter 1: The Warning

“Amara, don’t marry my brother.””

Those five words were not supposed to be part of my wedding week.

They were supposed to be filled with laughter, champagne glasses, last-minute dress fittings, and my mother reminding me for the hundredth time not to cry before walking down the aisle because “mascara is expensive.””

Instead, I was standing alone in the quiet corner of a hotel garden, staring at my future sister-in-law like she had just announced that someone had died.

Except nobody had died.

At least, not yet.

Because the version of my life I had spent three years building was suddenly hanging by a thread.

A week earlier, I was the happiest woman I knew.

I had a diamond ring on my finger. A wedding dress hanging in my bedroom closet. A fiancé who kissed my forehead every morning before work and sent me pictures of random things that reminded him of me.

A coffee cup with a funny quote.

A dog wearing sunglasses.

A sunset over the city.

Small things.

The kind of things that make you believe someone sees you.

His name was Adrian.

And I was supposed to become his wife in seven days.

For three years, Adrian had been my safe place.

He was the person I called when my car broke down on the highway. The person who stayed up until 2 a.m. helping me prepare for a job interview. The person who held my hand at my grandmother’s funeral and didn’t let go even when I cried so hard I couldn’t speak.

He wasn’t perfect.

Nobody was.

But I believed he was honest.

That was the one thing I never questioned.

Until Monique.

Adrian’s older sister had always been polite to me, but we were never close. She was the kind of person who watched more than she spoke. At family dinners, she smiled at the right moments, asked careful questions, and seemed to notice details everyone else missed.

I had always assumed she was just reserved.

I never imagined she was carrying a secret.

The night she pulled me aside, the wedding rehearsal dinner had just ended.

Everyone was inside the ballroom celebrating.

My friends were taking pictures.

Adrian was laughing with his cousins near the bar.

Everything looked perfect.

Too perfect.

“Monique,” I said, forcing a small laugh.

“You scared me. What’s going on?””

She looked toward the ballroom doors before looking back at me.

Her face was pale.

“Amara, I need you to listen to me before you say anything.””

My smile faded.

“Okay…”

She took a deep breath.

“Don’t marry Adrian.””

For a few seconds, I honestly thought I had misunderstood her.

The music from inside suddenly sounded distant.

“What?””

“Please,” she whispered.

“Just listen.””

I stared at her.

My first thought was anger.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Anger.

Because there was only one reason someone would say something like that one week before a wedding.

They wanted to destroy it.

“Monique, this isn’t funny.””

“I’m not joking.””

“You’re telling me not to marry your brother?””

“Yes.””

I laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“Why? Because you don’t like me?””

Her eyes softened.

“No.””

“Then what is this?””

She looked down at my engagement ring.

The ring Adrian had chosen himself.

The ring I had shown everyone.

The ring I had touched every night before falling asleep because it still felt unreal.

“Because I know something you don’t.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Monique looked at me.

And then she said the sentence that changed the way I looked at my entire relationship.

“Adrian has been with men.””

The garden went silent.

Not peaceful silent.

The kind of silence that feels like the world has stopped moving.

I blinked.

“What did you say?””

“You heard me.””

I shook my head immediately.

“No.””

“Amara—”

“No.””

My voice became sharper.

“Stop.””

Monique stepped closer.

“I’m not saying this to hurt you.””

“You don’t understand what you’re saying.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No, you don’t.””

I looked back toward the ballroom.

Through the glass doors, I could see Adrian smiling.

My Adrian.

The man who knew how I liked my coffee.

The man who held me when I had nightmares.

The man whose name was written beside mine on every wedding invitation.

“You’re trying to ruin my wedding.””

Her expression changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

“Do you really think I would do this because I don’t like you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

And that scared me.

Monique lowered her voice.

“I have caught him before.””

My heart skipped.

“Caught him doing what?””

She hesitated.

That hesitation frightened me more than anything she had already said.

“Having relationships he hid from everyone.””

I felt a cold wave move through my body.

“Monique…”

“I know how this sounds.””

“It sounds impossible.””

“I know.””

“My fiancé loves me.””

She nodded slowly.

“I believe he cares about you.””

That sentence hurt more than if she had said he didn’t.

“Then why are you saying this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because caring about someone and being honest with them are not always the same thing.””

I looked away.

I wanted to leave.

I wanted to walk back inside.

I wanted Adrian to put his arms around me and laugh when I told him his sister had lost her mind.

I wanted everything to return to normal.

But my feet wouldn’t move.

“Why are you telling me this now?”” I asked.

Monique swallowed.

“Because I thought I could ignore it.””

The wind moved through the trees around us.

“I thought maybe I was wrong. Maybe I misunderstood. Maybe he had changed.””

She looked at the ground.

“But then I saw something last month.””

“What?””

“He was still hiding things.””

My hands started shaking.

“What things?””

“I can’t prove everything.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She closed her eyes for a moment.

“When Adrian told me he was getting married, I thought maybe it meant he was finally ready to stop pretending.””

The word stopped me.

“Pretending?””

Monique looked at me.

“Yes.””

I felt my throat tighten.

“Pretending what?””

She didn’t answer immediately.

Instead, she asked me something.

“Has Adrian ever introduced you to all of his close friends?””

I frowned.

“What kind of question is that?””

“Has he?””

I thought about it.

There were friends from work.

College friends.

Family friends.

But suddenly, I realized something strange.

There were parts of Adrian’s life I had never seen.

Places he never took me.

People he never introduced me to.

Little gaps I had always ignored because I trusted him.

“Yes,” I said quietly.

But even I didn’t sound convinced.

Monique noticed.

She always noticed.

“Amara, I’m not telling you this because of who he’s attracted to.””

Her voice became firm.

“I’m telling you because you deserve to know if the person you’re marrying has been lying to you.””

I stared at her.

That was the part I didn’t know how to fight.

Not because of the accusation.

Because of the possibility of deception.

I had spent three years believing I knew everything about Adrian.

What if I only knew the parts he wanted me to know?

“Then why?”” I whispered.

Monique looked confused.

“Why what?””

“Why would he marry me?””

She didn’t answer.

I felt tears forming, but I refused to let them fall.

“Monique, if what you’re saying is true… why would he choose me?””

Her face changed.

Like she had been waiting for that question.

“Because you make everything look normal.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“What does that mean?””

She looked toward the ballroom.

“Amara…”

“Tell me.””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“I think Adrian believes marrying you will make sure nobody ever finds out.””

I stopped breathing.

For a moment, all I could hear was my own heartbeat.

“No.””

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped backward.

“You’re wrong.””

“I hope I am.””

“You have no idea what you’re doing.””

“I know exactly what I’m doing.””

Her voice cracked.

“I’m trying to stop you from walking into a marriage where you might spend years wondering why the man beside you never truly let you in.””

I wanted to hate her.

I wanted to call her cruel.

I wanted to tell her she was jealous, bitter, or trying to get revenge against her own brother.

Anything that would make this easier.

But then my phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

A message appeared on the screen.

From Adrian.

**Where are you? I miss you. Come back inside.

I have a surprise for you. ❤️**

My chest tightened.

Because five minutes earlier, that message would have made me smile.

Now it felt like a question.

A question I didn’t know how to answer.

Monique watched my face.

“Amara.””

I looked up.

“What?””

She took a slow breath.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

She reached into her purse.

And pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I wasn’t the only one who found out.””

I didn’t move.

“What is that?””

Monique’s fingers trembled as she handed it to me.

“A message Adrian never wanted you to see.””

I looked down at the paper.

And before I opened it, I already knew my life was about to split into two parts.

May you like

The life before that message.

And the life after.
