Chapter 4: The Truth Hidden In The Deleted Messages

I stared at Ethan’s message until the words stopped looking like words.

*Amara, if you want the full truth about Adrian, ask him why he deleted my messages the night he proposed to you.*

My thumb hovered over the screen.

I wanted to reply.

I wanted to demand answers.

I wanted to ask who he was, why he knew about me, and why he had waited until a week before my wedding to appear.

But something stopped me.

A strange feeling.

A warning.

Because one thing had become painfully clear over the last hour.

Everyone around Adrian seemed to know pieces of a story I had never even heard.

Monique knew.

Ethan knew.

Maybe others knew.

The only person who didn’t know was me.

The woman wearing his ring.

The woman planning his wedding.

The woman who was supposed to wake up beside him for the rest of her life.

I locked my phone and walked out of the hotel.

The night air hit my face immediately.

I expected to feel relief.

I didn’t.

I expected leaving the ballroom would make everything clearer.

It didn’t.

My mind was a room full of broken glass.

Every memory I had with Adrian was still there, but now every piece had a sharp edge.

The first time he told me he loved me.

The night we danced in our tiny apartment because we couldn’t afford a real date.

The morning he proposed.

I had been making pancakes when he walked into the kitchen wearing a suit.

I remember laughing because I thought he had accidentally dressed up for work.

Then he got down on one knee.

Then he cried.

And I cried.

And for a few minutes, the entire world disappeared.

How could something so beautiful have been built on something he never told me?

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Adrian.

I let it ring.

A minute later, another call.

Then another.

Finally, a message appeared.

*Please talk to me. I know you’re hurt, but don’t let one conversation destroy everything we built.*

I read it twice.

One conversation.

That was how he saw it?

One conversation with his sister.

One conversation that exposed years of secrets.

I typed a response.

Deleted it.

Typed another.

Deleted that too.

Because every version sounded like I was asking him to explain why he hurt me.

And I was tired of asking.

I wanted him to understand without being guided.

I got into my car and drove home.

The entire drive, I kept thinking about one question.

Why did he propose that night?

Not why did he love me.

Not why did he choose me.

Why that moment?

Why then?

Because Ethan’s message had mentioned something specific.

*The night he proposed.*

That detail bothered me.

It meant something happened that night.

Something Adrian wanted erased.

When I arrived home, the apartment felt different.

Same walls.

Same furniture.

Same pictures.

But it no longer felt like my home.

It felt like a museum.

A place where I could look at evidence of a life I thought I had.

I walked into our bedroom.

The wedding dress was hanging beside the closet.

Covered in plastic.

Waiting.

I sat on the edge of the bed and stared at it.

Seven days.

Seven days until I was supposed to stand in front of everyone and promise forever.

My phone buzzed again.

This time, it wasn’t Adrian.

It was Monique.

*Can I come over?*

I stared at the message.

A part of me didn’t want to see her.

Because every time I looked at her, I remembered the moment my perfect life cracked open.

But another part of me knew something.

She was the only person who had warned me.

The only person who had nothing to gain.

I replied.

*Okay.*

Twenty minutes later, there was a knock on my door.

When I opened it, Monique looked exhausted.

Not victorious.

Not satisfied.

Exhausted.

Like telling me the truth had hurt her too.

“Can I come in?””

I stepped aside.

Neither of us spoke as we walked into the living room.

She sat down slowly.

“I’m sorry.””

I crossed my arms.

“For what?””

“For the way you found out.””

I looked at her.

“There was no good way.””

“No.””

She looked down.

“There wasn’t.””

Silence filled the room.

Then I asked the question I had been holding back.

“Did Adrian know you were going to tell me?””

“No.””

“Would he have stopped you?””

She hesitated.

“Yes.””

That answer hurt.

“Why?””

“Because he would have convinced me not to.””

“Meaning?””

Monique looked at me.

“My brother is not a bad person.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s not what I asked.””

“I know.””

She took a breath.

“But sometimes good people make selfish choices.””

I sat down across from her.

“Tell me everything.””

Her face tightened.

“I don’t know everything.””

“Then tell me what you know.””

She nodded.

“Adrian and Ethan met before you two started dating.””

“How long before?””

“About six months.””

I looked away.

Six months.

Six months before me.

“Were they together?””

Monique was quiet.

“I think so.””

“You think?””

“Adrian never told me directly.””

“But you knew?””

“I suspected.””

I stared at her.

“How?””

She rubbed her hands together.

“Because I saw the way Adrian looked at him.””

The answer was simple.

Too simple.

“You saw it?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

Monique looked toward the window.

“The first time I met Ethan, Adrian introduced him as a friend.””

“And?””

“And nobody introduces someone like that if they’re just a friend.””

My chest tightened.

“What do you mean?””

She swallowed.

“They knew each other’s habits. They finished each other’s sentences. Adrian knew how Ethan took his coffee.””

A painful memory surfaced.

Adrian knew exactly how I took mine too.

Suddenly, something that once felt special felt less unique.

Monique continued.

“They were close.””

“How close?””

She looked at me.

“Close enough that when Ethan disappeared, Adrian wasn’t himself for months.””

I felt my heart sink.

“Disappeared?””

“Yes.””

“What happened?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s impossible.””

“It isn’t.””

Her voice became softer.

“Adrian stopped talking about him. He deleted pictures. He changed his phone number.””

My breathing slowed.

“Why?””

“I think he was trying to erase that part of his life.””

The words hung there.

Erase.

That was the word.

Not hide.

Not protect.

Erase.

I looked at my engagement ring.

“Then I came along.””

Monique didn’t answer.

She didn’t have to.

I already knew.

“You’re saying I was a replacement?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

She looked at me with sadness.

“I’m saying you were the future he wanted people to see.””

My eyes burned.

“That’s worse.””

“I know.””

I stood up and walked to the window.

Outside, the neighborhood was quiet.

Normal.

People were eating dinner.

Watching television.

Living ordinary lives.

Mine felt like it had been ripped open.

“Why didn’t you tell your parents?””

Monique looked away.

“Because they wouldn’t have listened.””

“That’s not fair.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“But it’s true.””

She paused.

“My parents have a very specific idea of who Adrian should be.””

“And?””

“And Adrian spent his whole life trying to become that person.””

I turned around.

“So he married me because his family expected it?””

“No.””

“Then why?””

Monique looked at me.

“Because I think he convinced himself he could make everyone happy.””

I let out a bitter laugh.

“Everyone except me.””

She didn’t argue.

That hurt more.

Then my phone buzzed.

Both of us looked down.

Another message.

This time from Adrian.

*I’m outside. Please open the door.*

My entire body went still.

Monique looked at me.

“What are you going to do?””

I didn’t answer.

Because I didn’t know.

Part of me wanted to open the door.

Part of me wanted to lock every door and never see him again.

Then came another message.

*I know you saw Ethan’s name.*

My heart dropped.

Monique stood up.

“He knows?””

I stared at the screen.

A third message appeared.

*But before you believe him, you need to know something about why he contacted you.*

I looked toward the front door.

Adrian was on the other side.

Waiting.

And somewhere between the man I loved and the stranger I was beginning to discover…

I realized I had another impossible choice.

Trust the person who lied to me?

Or trust the person who disappeared and came back with a secret?

Then the doorbell rang.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

And Adrian said my name through the door.

“Amara… please. There’s something about Ethan you don’t know.””
