Chapter 8: The Letter From the Past

Daniel stared at the envelope.

The handwriting looked familiar.

Not Claire’s.

Not his father’s.

Not his mother’s.

Something about it bothered him.

Like a memory he couldn’t reach.

“Who delivered this?”” his father asked.

The officer shook his head.

“It was left at the front desk.””

“By who?””

“We don’t know.””

Daniel looked at the envelope again.

Everyone had been exposed tonight.

Every secret.

Every betrayal.

And yet somehow, someone still had another piece of the puzzle.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a single page.

No explanation.

No signature.

Just words.

*Daniel,*

*If you are reading this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth.*

His heart stopped.

They?

He continued.

*Your grandfather knew people would fight over what he built. He also knew you were the only person who would refuse to become like them.*

Daniel swallowed.

His grandfather had died five years earlier.

But suddenly, it felt like the old man was standing in the room.

Watching.

Waiting.

The letter continued.

*The trust was never created to make you wealthy. It was created to test the people around you.*

Daniel looked up.

His father looked concerned.

“What does it say?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He kept reading.

*The most dangerous person is not the one who wants your money. It is the person who convinces you they are protecting you while taking away your choices.*

Daniel slowly lowered the paper.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone understood.

The letter wasn’t only about Claire.

It was about all of them.

His mother stepped closer.

“Daniel?””

He handed her the letter.

She read silently.

Then her face changed.

“What?””

His father looked at her.

She looked at Daniel.

“Your grandfather knew.””

“Knew what?””

She looked at Claire.

“That someone would try to manipulate you.””

Claire’s face went pale.

Daniel turned.

“Did you know about this letter?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

For once, Daniel believed her.

Because she looked genuinely surprised.

His father took the letter.

As he read, his expression became darker.

“There’s another page.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

His father turned the paper over.

On the back was another message.

*The person who brings this truth to Daniel has proven their loyalty.*

Everyone froze.

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?””

His father looked at the officer.

The officer stepped back.

“I was only asked to deliver it.””

Daniel looked around.

“Who requested this?””

The officer hesitated.

“Your grandfather’s attorney.””

Daniel’s eyes widened.

“My grandfather’s attorney is alive?””

His father nodded slowly.

“I thought he retired.””

“Apparently not.””

Daniel felt a strange pull in his chest.

A person from his grandfather’s past.

A hidden letter.

A secret condition.

Nothing about this wedding was what it seemed.

Then Claire spoke.

“Daniel.””

He looked at her.

“What?””

Her voice was quiet.

“I need to tell you something.””

His father immediately said:

“Be careful.””

Daniel looked at him.

“No more secrets.””

He turned to Claire.

“Say it.””

She took a breath.

“When I first met you…”

A pause.

“I knew who your family was.””

Daniel stared.

“What does that mean?””

“It means I knew about the trust.””

The words hit.

“You knew before our first date?””

Claire nodded.

Daniel felt the room spin.

“How?””

She looked ashamed.

“My father worked with your grandfather.””

Nobody moved.

“My father knew about the trust structure.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“So you met me because of it?””

“No.””

Her answer came instantly.

“No.””

But Daniel had heard that word before.

Everyone said no.

Everyone had an explanation.

Claire stepped closer.

“I didn’t know I would fall in love with you.””

Daniel looked away.

“Maybe.””

Her voice broke.

“But the beginning was not innocent.””

That honesty surprised him.

She continued.

“I should have told you.””

“Yes.””

“I was scared you would think I was using you.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Were you?””

Claire didn’t answer.

And that silence hurt.

Because sometimes silence was more truthful than words.

His father folded the letter.

“There’s something we need to do.””

Daniel looked at him.

“What?””

“The attorney who sent this letter.””

His father looked toward the door.

“He’s waiting outside.””

Daniel frowned.

“Here?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His father’s face became serious.

“Because your grandfather left one final instruction.””

Daniel felt uneasy.

“What instruction?””

His father looked at the envelope.

“He said the truth should only be revealed when everyone who wanted something from you was in the same room.””

Daniel looked around.

Claire.

Richard.

Linda.

His father.

His mother.

Everyone.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

An elderly man stepped inside.

And Daniel recognized him immediately.

He was the man who had handled his grandfather’s estate.

The man who had disappeared after the funeral.

The man his family said was too sick to ever return.

But he looked healthy.

And in his hand was a small black box.

He looked at Daniel.

“I’m sorry it took this long.””

Daniel stared.

“Who are you?””

The old man looked at everyone else.

May you like

Then back at him.

“I’m the man your grandfather trusted to find out who truly loved you.””
