Chapter 6: The Person Behind the Plan

Daniel couldn’t speak.

The signature stared back at him from the page.

His father’s name.

The letters were unmistakable.

His father.

The man who had just exposed Claire.

The man who had defended his mother.

The man standing beside him as if he had spent the entire night fighting for the truth.

“Dad?””

The word came out broken.

His father closed his eyes.

For the first time that night, he looked afraid.

Not of Claire.

Not of Linda.

Of Daniel.

“I can explain.””

The entire ballroom went silent again.

Daniel laughed softly.

A painful sound.

“Everyone says that tonight.””

His father lowered his head.

“I know.””

His mother immediately stepped forward.

“Daniel, listen.””

He turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She looked devastated.

“I knew he signed something.””

The answer felt like another betrayal.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know what it meant.””

Daniel looked at his father.

“What did you sign?””

His father took a breath.

“A temporary authorization form.””

“For what?””

“To protect you.””

Daniel stared.

“That’s what Claire said.””

His father flinched.

The comparison hurt.

Good.

Because Daniel needed him to understand.

“You all keep saying you’re protecting me.””

His voice rose.

“But nobody trusted me enough to tell me the truth.””

Nobody answered.

Because it was true.

His mother looked down.

His father looked away.

Even Claire had nothing to say.

Daniel looked around the room.

The wedding decorations.

The flowers.

The candles.

Everything that had been created to celebrate love.

Now it felt like a stage where everyone had been acting.

Except him.

His father finally spoke.

“I signed because your grandfather required two family representatives before the trust could be reviewed.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

His father nodded.

“The trust had protections. Your grandfather knew people might try to access it.””

He looked at Claire.

“She found out before you did.””

Daniel turned.

“How?””

Linda answered.

“Through me.””

The room shifted.

Daniel looked at her.

“You had access?””

Linda shook her head.

“No. But I knew someone who did.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s father looked toward the ballroom entrance.

Then Daniel noticed something.

The staff members.

The guests.

The people who had been whispering.

One person had remained unusually quiet.

Daniel’s uncle.

Richard.

His father’s older brother.

The man who had given a speech earlier about family.

The man who had hugged Daniel and said he was proud.

Daniel stared.

“Uncle Richard?””

Every head turned.

Richard’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But Daniel saw it.

Recognition.

Fear.

His father whispered:

“Richard.””

Richard slowly stood.

“I was hoping this wouldn’t happen tonight.””

Daniel felt something cold move through him.

“How long?””

Richard looked away.

“Daniel—”

“How long have you known?””

Richard sighed.

“Longer than I should have.””

His father stepped forward.

“You were the one who gave her the information.””

Richard didn’t deny it.

The silence was enough.

Daniel felt sick.

His own family.

His own wedding.

A plan built around him.

Without him.

Richard looked at Daniel.

“I didn’t think it would hurt anyone.””

Daniel stared.

“You didn’t think destroying my relationship with my mother would hurt anyone?””

Richard shook his head.

“That wasn’t supposed to happen.””

“Then what was supposed to happen?””

Richard looked at Claire.

Then at the folder.

“The agreement was supposed to be signed.””

Daniel’s hands tightened.

“So you helped her.””

Richard hesitated.

“I helped myself.””

The honesty stunned everyone.

His father’s face turned cold.

“You were trying to access the trust too.””

Richard looked down.

“I had debts.””

There it was.

The same excuse.

Fear.

Survival.

Money.

Everyone had a reason.

Everyone had a story.

But Daniel was tired of reasons.

He stepped toward Richard.

“You all made choices.””

Nobody spoke.

“You all looked at me and decided I was too emotional, too trusting, too easy to control.””

His voice shook.

“But you forgot one thing.””

He looked at his mother.

The woman who had walked through the door covered in mud because she thought she had lost her son.

“I know who loved me.””

The silence was heavy.

Claire started crying.

“Daniel…”

He looked at her.

And for a second, he remembered everything.

The good moments.

The laughter.

The promises.

But then he remembered the recording.

The papers.

His mother standing outside.

“I need the truth,” he said.

Claire wiped her tears.

“You have it.””

“No.””

He looked at everyone.

“I have pieces.””

His father frowned.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel picked up the folder.

“There’s still one question nobody has answered.””

Everyone waited.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“If you needed me to sign the agreement…”

A pause.

“Why did you schedule the wedding three days before my birthday?””

Claire went completely still.

Richard looked away.

Linda stopped breathing.

And Daniel knew.

He had finally asked the question they were all afraid of.

Because the answer wasn’t about money.

It was about timing.

May you like

And whatever happened four days from now…

Someone was desperate to make sure Daniel never reached his birthday with the truth.
