Chapter 4: The Secret Behind the Inheritance
The ballroom did not feel like a wedding anymore.
It felt like a courtroom.
Every person sitting at those tables had become a witness.
Daniel stared at Claire, waiting for her to take back the words.
Waiting for her to laugh and say she was scared, confused, emotional.
Anything.
But she didn’t.
She just stood there.
And that silence hurt more than any confession.
“You were trying to take my inheritance?”” Daniel asked.
Claire shook her head quickly.
“No. That’s not what I meant.””
“Then what did you mean?””
Her eyes moved toward the folder in his hands.
“Daniel, you don’t understand how complicated this is.””
He looked down at the papers.
The same papers she had planned to put in front of him after he was exhausted, surrounded by celebration, surrounded by people who would assume everything was normal.
“You’re right,” he said quietly.
“I don’t understand.””
His father stepped forward.
“That’s because she made sure you wouldn’t.””
Claire turned sharply.
“You don’t know me.””
His father’s expression hardened.
“I know enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“Dad, tell me everything.””
His father hesitated.
For the first time that night, Daniel saw uncertainty on his face.
Not fear.
Pain.
“I wanted your mother to tell you.””
His mother lowered her eyes.
Daniel walked toward her.
“Mom?””
She looked ashamed.
Again.
Like she was the one who had done something wrong.
“I didn’t want to be the reason your wedding fell apart.””
Daniel felt his chest tighten.
“Mom, you were almost not allowed to walk into your own son’s wedding.””
She wiped her cheek.
“I thought if I told you what I found, you would think I was trying to ruin your happiness.””
“You could never ruin my happiness.””
She looked at him.
“Claire knew that.””
The sentence made Daniel turn.
“What does that mean?””
His mother took a deep breath.
“She knew how much you loved me.””
Claire’s face changed.
“Stop making it sound like I hated your relationship.””
Daniel looked at her.
“Didn’t you?””
“No.””
“Then why?””
Claire’s voice became louder.
“Because your mother had too much influence.””
A murmur moved through the guests.
Daniel stared.
“Influence?””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward his mother.
“Everyone listens to her. Your father listens to her. You listen to her.””
His mother looked stunned.
“I never controlled my son.””
Claire laughed bitterly.
“You didn’t have to. He wanted your approval.””
Daniel felt the words hit.
Because there was a piece of truth hidden inside them.
He did want his mother’s approval.
But not because she controlled him.
Because she had spent his entire life loving him.
There was a difference.
His father stepped forward.
“The problem wasn’t that my wife loved our son.””
He looked directly at Claire.
“The problem was that you needed him isolated.””
Claire’s eyes flashed.
“That’s ridiculous.””
“Is it?””
His father pulled another document from his pocket.
Daniel noticed his mother close her eyes.
She already knew what it was.
“What is that?”” Daniel asked.
His father handed it over.
“A message Claire sent to a financial advisor.””
Daniel read the first line.
*Once Daniel signs, his mother will no longer have access to the family trust information.*
His fingers went numb.
He looked up.
“You planned to remove Mom?””
Claire immediately shook her head.
“No.””
“Then explain this.””
She stepped closer.
“It wasn’t about removing her.””
“What was it about?””
Claire’s voice lowered.
“It was about protecting myself.””
“From my mother?””
“From everyone.””
Daniel stared at her.
The woman standing in front of him was not the woman he thought he knew.
He remembered their first date.
The way she laughed when coffee spilled on her sleeve.
The way she told him she hated dishonesty.
The way she said trust was the foundation of every relationship.
Now every memory felt like it had a shadow behind it.
His father turned toward the guests.
“I know many of you are wondering why this had to happen tonight.””
Nobody moved.
“Because tomorrow morning, Daniel was supposed to sign away control of something his grandfather left him.””
Daniel looked at the folder.
“My grandfather?””
His father nodded.
“Your grandfather created the trust before he died.””
Daniel frowned.
“I thought it was just a small inheritance.””
His father gave a sad smile.
“That’s what you were told.””
Claire looked away.
And that was when Daniel noticed something.
She wasn’t shocked.
She wasn’t learning this information.
She already knew.
“How much?”” Daniel asked.
His father didn’t answer immediately.
That hesitation frightened him.
“Dad.””
“Enough that someone would spend months creating a plan to access it.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel looked at Claire.
“Did you know?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
His heart sank.
“How long?””
Claire didn’t answer.
“How long did you know?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Since before we got engaged.””
Daniel took a step back.
The words were almost impossible to process.
Before they got engaged.
Before he asked her to marry him.
Before he thought they were building a life together.
His father picked up the microphone again.
“There is still one thing Daniel doesn’t know.””
Claire suddenly looked terrified.
“Don’t.””
Daniel turned.
“What?””
His father looked at him.
“The inheritance wasn’t the only reason she needed your mother gone.””
Daniel felt cold.
“What else?””
His father reached for the final page inside the envelope.
And before he could unfold it, every light in the ballroom suddenly flickered.
The music system shut off.
The room fell dark.
Then a phone flashlight turned on from the back of the room.
A woman’s voice spoke.
“Maybe I should tell him before you do.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel’s blood froze.
Because he recognized the voice.
It belonged to Linda.
May you like
His mother’s best friend.
And she was standing beside the exit door.
