Chapter 2: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Daniel did not remember walking across the ballroom.

One moment he was standing beside his mother.

The next, he was standing in front of Claire.

Her phone was still glowing in her hand.

She quickly turned the screen away.

Too late.

Everyone had seen it.

“Claire,” Daniel said.

His voice sounded unfamiliar.

She swallowed.

“Daniel, please don’t do this in front of everyone.””

He almost laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You mean don’t ask questions at my own wedding?””

Her eyes flashed.

“You’re twisting this.””

“Am I?””

The band members quietly stepped away from the dance floor.

The photographer lowered his camera completely.

Nobody wanted to capture this moment anymore.

They wanted to survive it.

Claire looked toward his father.

“You’ve been waiting to ruin this day.””

His father’s expression hardened.

“No. I’ve been waiting for my son to see the truth.””

Daniel looked between them.

“What truth?””

His father reached into his jacket again.

This time, he pulled out a small recording device.

His mother immediately covered her mouth.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom?””

She closed her eyes.

“I didn’t want you to hear it.””

That sentence made his stomach drop.

“What is it?””

His father pressed a button.

At first, there was only static.

Then Claire’s voice filled the ballroom.

“His mother is the biggest obstacle.””

Daniel froze.

The recording continued.

Another voice responded.

A woman.

His mother’s best friend, Linda.

“She’s not going to disappear just because you want her to.””

Claire laughed softly.

“She will when Daniel believes she chose to leave.””

Daniel felt like the floor moved beneath him.

The recording played.

“She worships him,” Linda said.

“That’s the problem,” Claire answered.

“He listens to her too much.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

Her face had gone pale.

“Turn it off.””

Nobody moved.

“Turn it off!”” she shouted.

The room went silent.

Daniel had never heard Claire raise her voice before.

Not once.

His father stopped the recording.

“Now tell him.””

Claire looked at Daniel.

For a few seconds, she said nothing.

Then she whispered:

“I can explain.””

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s what people say when they don’t have the truth.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You’re making me the villain.””

He stared at her.

“You lied about my mother.””

“I was trying to protect us.””

“By destroying her?””

Claire’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then help me understand.””

She looked around the room.

At the guests.

At the decorations.

At the wedding she had planned.

Then she lowered her voice.

“I knew your mother would never accept me.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

“She never liked me.””

His mother looked shocked.

“That’s not true.””

Claire turned toward her.

“You always smiled at me, but you were judging me.””

Daniel’s mother stepped forward.

“I invited you into my home.””

“You watched everything I did.””

“I wanted to know the woman my son loved.””

“And I knew I would never be enough.””

The words sounded emotional.

Almost convincing.

For a moment, Daniel saw the hurt woman he thought he knew.

Then he remembered the messages.

The lies.

The mud on his mother’s dress.

The way she had stood outside the ballroom afraid to enter.

“Why didn’t you just talk to me?”” Daniel asked.

Claire looked away.

“Because you would have chosen her.””

The honesty of the answer shocked him.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was true.

He would have chosen his mother.

Not instead of Claire.

But alongside her.

His father stepped forward.

“You didn’t want his mother gone because of an argument.””

Claire’s eyes moved to him.

“You wanted her gone because she knew something.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

His father looked at Claire.

“Three months ago, my wife discovered Claire had been hiding financial problems.””

Claire’s face changed.

Daniel felt his heart sink.

“No.””

His father continued.

“She found unpaid debts. Loans. Money taken from accounts she didn’t know existed.””

Claire’s voice became sharper.

“You went through my things?””

“No,” Daniel’s mother said quietly.

“You left the documents in my car after dinner.””

Daniel looked at Claire.

“Is that true?””

Claire’s silence answered.

He stepped back.

The woman he loved.

The woman he planned to spend his life with.

Suddenly felt like a locked room.

And he had been handed the key too late.

His father picked up the microphone again.

“There is one more thing Daniel needs to hear.””

Claire looked terrified.

“No.””

His father didn’t stop.

“The reason she wanted your mother away from this wedding…”

He pressed another button on the recorder.

A new voice played.

Claire’s voice.

But this time, Daniel heard something different.

Not anger.

Not sadness.

A plan.

“I just need the wedding finished before he learns.””

Daniel stopped breathing.

Finished before he learned what?

The recording continued.

“And once Daniel signs the papers tomorrow, everything changes.””

The ballroom erupted in whispers.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What papers?””

She didn’t answer.

His father slowly handed him a folder from the envelope.

On the front were two names.

Daniel’s.

And Claire’s.

May you like

And underneath them was a title that made his hands go cold.
