Chapter 13: The Accident Nobody Mentioned

Daniel stared at the message.

Five words.

That was all.

*He knows about the accident.*

But those five words carried a weight that made the entire room change.

His father noticed first.

“What is it?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He looked at the phone screen again.

The sender’s name was still there.

A name that made no sense.

A name that should not have been connected to any of this.

His own mother.

The message had been sent from his mother’s phone.

Daniel slowly looked up.

“Mom.””

Her face went pale.

“I didn’t send that.””

Nobody spoke.

His father immediately reached for the phone.

“Let me see.””

Daniel handed it over.

His father stared at the screen.

“This is impossible.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“When was it sent?””

Daniel checked.

“Two minutes ago.””

His mother shook her head.

“My phone was in my purse the entire time.””

Linda whispered:

“Someone cloned it.””

Everyone looked at her.

She swallowed.

“It’s possible.””

Daniel looked around the room.

The same feeling returned.

The feeling that someone was always one step ahead.

But this time, it was different.

Because the message mentioned something nobody had discussed.

The accident.

Daniel looked at his father.

“What accident?””

His father went completely still.

That was enough.

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“What accident?””

His mother looked at his father.

Robert closed his eyes.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

Daniel stepped back.

“Not again.””

His voice echoed.

“I am done finding out pieces of my own life from everyone else.””

His father nodded slowly.

“You’re right.””

A pause.

“You deserve the truth.””

Daniel waited.

His father looked at Thomas.

Thomas gave a small nod.

Robert took a breath.

“Twenty years ago, before you were born, your grandfather’s oldest business partner died.””

Daniel frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?””

“His death was called an accident.””

A chill moved through the room.

“But your grandfather never believed it.””

Thomas continued.

“He spent years investigating.””

Daniel looked at the letter.

“Why?””

Thomas answered.

“Because the accident happened after a disagreement over the family trust structure.””

Daniel looked at Richard.

His uncle immediately shook his head.

“Don’t look at me.””

“I didn’t say anything.””

“You were thinking it.””

Daniel looked away.

His father continued.

“Your grandfather discovered someone had been moving money illegally.””

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s stomach tightened.

“Who?””

His father looked at him.

“That’s what he was trying to find out.””

Thomas corrected him.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

Thomas looked serious.

“He found out.””

The room went silent.

Daniel whispered:

“Who?””

Thomas looked toward the black box.

“The same person who sent this message.””

Daniel looked at the phone.

His mother’s phone.

His mother’s name.

His mother’s number.

“But Mom didn’t send it.””

“No,” Thomas said.

“Someone wants you to believe she did.””

Daniel felt cold.

His mother stepped forward.

“What does the accident have to do with Daniel?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Your grandfather believed the person responsible was still close to the family.””

Daniel stared.

“Close?””

“Yes.””

His father’s expression changed.

“Thomas.””

But Thomas continued.

“Your grandfather created one final safeguard.””

Daniel looked confused.

“What safeguard?””

“He recorded everything.””

Thomas reached into the box.

Another device.

Another secret.

Daniel almost laughed.

“How many recordings did he make?””

Thomas didn’t smile.

“Enough.””

He pressed play.

Static.

Then his grandfather’s voice.

“I do not know who will hear this.””

A pause.

“But if Daniel is hearing it, then someone has already tried to control his life.””

Daniel’s throat tightened.

His grandfather continued.

“There is one truth my family must understand.””

The recording crackled.

“The accident was not an accident.””

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at his father.

His father looked terrified.

The recording continued.

“And the person responsible is not the person everyone suspects.””

Daniel leaned closer.

The room held its breath.

“I know who did it.””

A pause.

“I also know why.””

The recording stopped.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked at Thomas.

“Why stop there?””

Thomas looked uncomfortable.

“Because that was not the full recording.””

Daniel stared.

“What?””

Thomas nodded.

“The second half was locked.””

“Locked by who?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Your grandfather.””

Daniel felt his stomach drop.

“How do we unlock it?””

Thomas looked at the black box.

“You need something only you have.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

Thomas reached inside.

And pulled out an old photograph.

Daniel recognized it instantly.

It was from his childhood.

A family photo.

His grandfather.

His parents.

Him.

But something was different.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

A message Daniel had never seen before.

*The key is where you first learned who you could trust.*

Daniel stared at the words.

Then he suddenly understood.

His childhood home.

The garden.

The place where his mother kept the flowers that reminded her of him.

The place Claire had never visited.

The place his grandfather loved.

Thomas looked at him.

“We need to go there.””

Daniel looked at the wedding decorations one final time.

The day that was supposed to begin his future had become the day that uncovered his past.

And somewhere inside his childhood home was the answer.

But before they left, Daniel’s phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

A voice whispered:

“Daniel.””

He froze.

Because he knew the voice.

It belonged to someone who should have been impossible to hear.

May you like

Someone who had been dead for years.

“Your grandfather lied to you.””
