Chapter 9: The Child Nobody Knew

Roberto stared at the birth certificate until the words blurred.

His own signature sat at the bottom.

A signature he had no memory of writing.

The name at the top belonged to a child.

A child he had never known existed.

*Mateo Alvarez.*

For several seconds, Roberto couldn't breathe.

The room around him disappeared.

The walls.

The desk.

The city lights outside his window.

Everything became distant.

Because there was only one question screaming in his mind.

How could he have a son he never knew about?

A knock interrupted him.

He quickly folded the document.

"Come in.""

Daniel entered.

One look at Roberto's face told him something had changed.

"What happened?""

Roberto held up the paper.

"Explain this.""

Daniel stopped.

His expression changed immediately.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"You knew.""

Daniel slowly sat down.

"Yes.""

The answer was almost worse than the secret itself.

Roberto stood.

"You knew I had a child?""

Daniel didn't answer.

"Seven years.""

His voice became sharper.

"Seven years you knew?""

"I knew there was a child.""

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked down.

"It means I didn't know the full truth.""

Roberto threw the document onto the desk.

"My signature is on this.""

Daniel picked it up.

"Because you signed it.""

"No.""

"You did.""

The certainty in his voice made Roberto angry.

"I would remember having a child.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Would you?""

The question stopped him.

Because suddenly memories began appearing.

A business trip.

A woman from years ago.

A relationship he had ended before it became serious.

A conversation he had buried because his father told him it was a distraction.

No.

Not a distraction.

A person.

A life.

Her name was Isabella.

He hadn't thought about her in years.

"Isabella.""

Daniel nodded.

Roberto sat slowly.

"She's alive?""

"No.""

The room became quiet.

"What?""

"She died six years ago.""

Roberto looked away.

Another person gone.

Another secret hidden.

"What happened to the child?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Mateo raised him.""

Roberto felt sick.

"Mateo?""

Vanessa's brother.

The man who hated him.

"The child is his?""

"No.""

Daniel looked at him.

"Your son was taken by Mateo after Isabella died.""

Roberto's hands tightened.

"Why?""

"Because Mateo needed leverage.""

The anger returned.

"Against me.""

"Yes.""

Roberto stood again.

"My entire life has been people using my family against me.""

Daniel didn't disagree.

That hurt.

A quiet sound came from the doorway.

Roberto turned.

Sofía stood there.

He immediately softened.

"How long have you been there?""

"Long enough.""

His heart sank.

She had heard.

"Sofía—"

"Do I have a brother?""

The question was simple.

Childlike.

But it carried years of pain.

Roberto walked toward her.

"I don't know yet.""

She looked confused.

"You don't know?""

He knelt.

"I know there is someone who needs us.""

"Is he scared?""

The question surprised him.

"What?""

"If he was hidden like me, maybe he was scared too.""

Roberto felt tears forming.

His daughter understood something he had spent years ignoring.

Children didn't become broken because they were weak.

They became wounded because adults forgot they were human.

"I think he was.""

Sofía reached for his hand.

"Then find him.""

The words were quiet.

But they gave him more strength than any business victory.

The search began immediately.

Elena tracked old records.

Daniel contacted former investigators.

María helped gather every detail about Vanessa and Mateo's movements.

Three days later, they found him.

A teenager.

Sixteen years old.

Living under a different name in a small town two hours away.

Roberto stood outside the house, unable to knock.

Daniel watched him.

"You ready?""

No.

He wasn't.

He had faced enemies.

Courtrooms.

Financial disasters.

But this was different.

This was his son.

A child who grew up believing his father abandoned him.

Roberto knocked.

A woman opened the door.

She looked frightened.

"Who are you?""

Roberto swallowed.

"I'm looking for Lucas.""

Her expression changed.

"You shouldn't be here.""

"Please.""

The woman hesitated.

Then stepped aside.

A boy appeared in the hallway.

Sixteen years old.

Dark hair.

Roberto saw the resemblance immediately.

The eyes.

The expression.

The way he stood.

Like he was preparing for a fight.

"Who are you?""

Roberto couldn't speak for a moment.

Then:

"I'm Roberto.""

The boy's face changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

"You finally came.""

The words cut deeper than anger.

Roberto looked at him.

"You knew?""

Lucas laughed softly.

"Everyone knew except you.""

A silence followed.

"I tried to find you.""

"No, you didn't.""

Roberto felt the accusation.

Because maybe the boy was right.

"I didn't know.""

Lucas looked away.

"That's what everyone says.""

Roberto stepped closer.

"I am sorry.""

The boy looked at him.

"Do you know how many birthdays I spent waiting?""

Roberto had no answer.

"Do you know how many times I wondered if you hated me?""

"I never hated you.""

"Because you didn't know I existed.""

The truth was brutal.

And deserved.

Roberto lowered his eyes.

"I can't fix sixteen years.""

"No.""

Lucas nodded.

"You can't.""

A long silence.

Then the boy asked:

"Why now?""

Roberto looked at him.

"Because I found the truth.""

Lucas gave a bitter smile.

"Truth always comes late in your family.""

Before Roberto could answer, his phone rang.

Elena.

He answered immediately.

"Tell me.""

Her voice sounded urgent.

"Roberto, you need to come back.""

"What happened?""

A pause.

Then:

"Mateo wasn't running.""

Roberto frowned.

"What do you mean?""

"He wanted you to find Lucas.""

The words chilled him.

"Why?""

Elena lowered her voice.

"Because Lucas isn't the final secret.""

Roberto looked at the boy standing in front of him.

"What is?""

A long pause.

Then Elena said:

"Your father left instructions before he died.""

Roberto felt his blood run cold.

"What instructions?""

"He knew everything would eventually be exposed.""

"And?""

"He left one final message.""

May you like

Roberto waited.

"He said: *When Roberto finds the child, tell him the truth about Sofía.*"
