Chapter 5: The Name on the File

The name on the document was impossible.

Roberto stared at it for so long that the letters stopped looking like a word.

They became shapes.

Ink.

A cruel joke created by someone who understood exactly where to place the knife.

*Alessandro Alvarez.*

His father.

The man who had taught him everything about business.

The man whose portrait still hung in the main hallway of Alvarez Holdings.

The man whose voice Roberto could still remember saying:

"A company can survive losing money. It can survive losing clients. But it cannot survive losing trust.""

Roberto slowly lowered the file.

"No.""

Daniel watched him carefully.

"I knew you would say that.""

"Because it's impossible.""

"Because you don't want it to be true.""

Roberto looked at him sharply.

"Don't talk like you know me.""

Daniel didn't respond.

That made Roberto angrier.

Seven years ago, Daniel had been his closest friend.

Then he disappeared.

Now he returned carrying accusations that could destroy everything Roberto believed about his family.

"You expect me to believe my father planned your accident?""

Daniel looked toward Vanessa.

"No.""

The answer surprised him.

"I believe your father was involved.""

The room went silent.

Roberto felt his anger shift.

"What's the difference?""

"The difference is that your father wasn't the person controlling the plan.""

Daniel opened the file.

Inside were bank transfers.

Private meetings.

Photographs.

Emails.

Years of hidden evidence.

"He discovered what Vanessa was doing.""

Roberto looked at the papers.

"What was she doing?""

Daniel took a breath.

"Building a way to take control of everything you owned.""

Vanessa stepped forward.

"That is a lie.""

Daniel turned toward her.

"Then explain the accounts.""

She said nothing.

"Explain the meetings.""

Silence.

"Explain why your lawyer prepared custody documents before you and Roberto even married.""

Roberto looked at Vanessa.

"Before we married?""

Her face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

"Roberto, there are things you don't understand.""

"No.""

His voice became cold.

"I understand perfectly.""

Sofía stood near the staircase, holding her rabbit.

Roberto noticed her.

Immediately, his anger turned into something else.

Pain.

She shouldn't be hearing this.

She shouldn't know what betrayal sounded like.

He walked toward her.

"Sweetheart, go with María for a moment.""

Sofía hesitated.

"Are you angry?""

Roberto swallowed.

"Yes.""

"At Vanessa?""

He looked at the woman who had lived in his house.

The woman who kissed him goodbye every morning.

The woman who told the world she loved his daughter.

"Yes.""

Sofía lowered her head.

"Did I do something wrong?""

The question destroyed him.

"No.""

He knelt.

"You did nothing wrong.""

"But everyone is fighting because of me.""

"No.""

He held her hand.

"People are responsible for their own choices.""

María appeared and gently guided Sofía away.

Only then did Roberto turn back.

"Start talking.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"Roberto—"

"Tell me the truth for once.""

Her eyes filled.

"You think I never loved you?""

He didn't answer.

That hurt her.

"Is that what you think?""

"I don't know what to think anymore.""

Vanessa looked away.

"When I met you, I didn't know how to survive in your world.""

Roberto frowned.

"What does that mean?""

"It means everyone around you had power.""

She laughed bitterly.

"Your employees. Your lawyers. Your family. Everyone knew the rules except me.""

"So you decided to create your own?""

"No.""

She looked at him.

"I decided I needed protection.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You decided you needed ownership.""

Vanessa ignored him.

"Do you know what your father said about me?""

Roberto froze.

"My father?""

"He said I was temporary.""

The room became quiet.

"He told me women like me didn't belong beside men like you.""

Roberto stared.

He had never heard this.

"That's not true.""

Vanessa smiled sadly.

"You weren't there.""

That sentence hit harder than he expected.

Because he wasn't.

Again.

He wasn't there.

The realization followed him everywhere.

He wasn't there when Sofía was afraid.

He wasn't there when Vanessa changed.

He wasn't there when his family started falling apart.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Your father knew about Vanessa's plan.""

Roberto looked at him.

"Why didn't he stop her?""

"Because he wanted to use her.""

"For what?""

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered:

"To control you.""

The words felt like a physical blow.

Roberto looked at the file again.

His father's signature appeared on several pages.

Approvals.

Transfers.

Instructions.

A hidden war fought inside his own family.

"Where is my father now?""

Nobody answered.

Roberto looked up.

"Where is he?""

Daniel lowered his eyes.

"Your father died two years ago.""

The room went cold.

Roberto knew.

Of course he knew.

But hearing it connected to this made it feel like a new wound.

"Then why hide this from me?""

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"Because the person who arranged my disappearance threatened everyone I cared about.""

Roberto's eyes narrowed.

"Who?""

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked toward the hallway.

Toward where Sofía had disappeared.

May you like

Then he said:

"The same person who has been living in this house.""
