Chapter 6: The Secret Room
Roberto had spent years believing his home was the one place where he could remove his armor.
The office required strategy.
Meetings required caution.
The business world required suspicion.
But home?
Home was supposed to be different.
Now every room felt like evidence.
Every photograph felt like a lie.
Every memory had a shadow behind it.
The next morning, Roberto walked through the house alone.
He stopped in front of Sofía's bedroom door.
Inside, he heard her talking quietly.
He opened it slightly.
She was sitting on the floor with María.
The stuffed rabbit rested beside her.
"What are you doing?""
Sofía turned.
"María is fixing Mr. Bunny.""
Roberto smiled faintly.
"Is he injured?""
"His ear.""
She touched the torn fabric.
"Vanessa pulled it once.""
Roberto froze.
"What?""
Sofía immediately became quiet.
María looked nervous.
Roberto stepped closer.
"When?""
Sofía looked down.
"Long ago.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because she said you would think I was lying.""
The room became painfully silent.
Roberto sat beside her.
"I would never think that.""
Sofía's expression was sad.
"But you believed her before.""
He couldn't answer.
Because she was right.
Children didn't need perfect parents.
They needed honest ones.
And Roberto had spent years believing whatever made his life easier.
A knock interrupted them.
Elena entered.
"Roberto.""
He stood.
"What happened?""
She handed him a tablet.
"You asked me to trace the accounts.""
He looked at the screen.
"What did you find?""
"Something strange.""
She pointed.
"Several payments were made to a private security company.""
"By Vanessa?""
"No.""
Elena paused.
"By someone else.""
Roberto leaned closer.
"Who?""
Elena looked uncomfortable.
"Your father's old foundation.""
His stomach tightened.
"That foundation closed years ago.""
"Officially.""
She opened another file.
"Unofficially, money kept moving.""
Roberto stared at the information.
"Where?""
Elena looked at him.
"To this house.""
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Roberto walked downstairs.
Straight toward Vanessa's office.
The door was locked.
That alone surprised him.
Vanessa had never locked doors before.
He forced it open.
Inside was nothing unusual.
A desk.
Books.
Decorations.
A normal room.
But Roberto had learned something.
Normal was where people hid things.
He searched carefully.
Drawers.
Shelves.
Cabinets.
Then he noticed the painting.
A large portrait hanging above the fireplace.
He removed it.
Behind it was a small keypad.
His heart started racing.
Vanessa had a secret room.
Inside his house.
He entered the code incorrectly twice.
Then stopped.
What would Vanessa choose?
A birthday?
An anniversary?
Something romantic?
He tried the date they met.
The lock opened.
That hurt more than if it hadn't.
Inside were boxes.
Documents.
Photographs.
A hidden life.
Roberto opened the first folder.
His name appeared immediately.
*Roberto Alvarez — Personal Assessment.*
He read the first page.
"Subject demonstrates predictable emotional responses when family loyalty is questioned.""
He stopped.
Subject.
Not husband.
Not partner.
Not father.
Subject.
The next document was worse.
"Sofía represents the strongest emotional vulnerability.""
His hands tightened.
They had studied his daughter.
Used her.
He kept reading.
"Approach through caregiver replacement strategy. Establish dependency. Remove competing influences.""
María.
That was why Vanessa tried to isolate Sofía.
Not because María was a problem.
Because María was protection.
A sound came from behind him.
Roberto turned.
Vanessa stood at the door.
Her face was pale.
"You shouldn't have found this.""
The sentence was quiet.
Almost sad.
Not denial.
Not shock.
Roberto looked around the room.
"How long?""
She didn't answer.
"How long have you been planning this?""
Vanessa closed the door.
"Since before I met you.""
The honesty was worse than any lie.
"Why?""
Her expression changed.
"Because your family destroyed mine.""
Roberto stared.
"What?""
She stepped inside.
"Your father ruined my father's company.""
"I don't know what you're talking about.""
"Of course you don't.""
Her voice broke.
"You never knew what your father did.""
Roberto looked at the documents.
For the first time, he wondered if Vanessa was not just the villain in his story.
Maybe she was another victim.
But victims could become monsters.
"What did you want?""
She looked at him.
"Everything your father took from us.""
"By hurting my daughter?""
Her eyes shifted.
Only briefly.
But he saw it.
Regret.
"I never wanted to hurt Sofía.""
"But you did.""
Silence.
Then Vanessa whispered:
"There is something you still don't know about your father.""
Roberto waited.
"He didn't just ruin my family.""
May you like
She stepped closer.
"He killed someone.""
