Chapter 3: The Hidden Agreement

Roberto had signed thousands of contracts in his lifetime.

Contracts worth millions.

Contracts that changed entire industries.

He trusted documents because documents had rules.

Numbers didn't lie.

Clauses didn't manipulate.

People did.

That was why seeing his own signature on the paper terrified him.

The next morning, he went straight to Alvarez Holdings and locked himself in his private office.

His assistant, Elena, noticed immediately.

"You look like you haven't slept.""

"I haven't.""

She placed a folder on his desk.

"Bad news?""

Roberto looked at the folder.

"Possibly the worst.""

Elena had worked beside him for twelve years.

She knew when not to ask questions.

She quietly closed the door.

"What do you need?""

"I need every legal document connected to my family. Private files. Trust agreements. Everything.""

Her expression changed.

"Roberto, what's happening?""

He looked at her.

"Someone has been making decisions about my daughter without me.""

Two hours later, Elena returned.

"There is something strange.""

Roberto looked up.

"What?""

She placed several documents in front of him.

"Six months ago, Vanessa requested access to a family legal account.""

"Why?""

"She claimed it was for emergency planning.""

Roberto scanned the pages.

"Did she receive approval?""

Elena hesitated.

"Your signature appears here.""

Roberto froze.

"No.""

"That's what I thought.""

He grabbed the paper.

The signature looked exactly like his.

But something felt wrong.

"I never signed this.""

Elena lowered her voice.

"Then someone copied your signature.""

Roberto leaned back.

For years, he had protected his company from people trying to steal it.

But he never imagined someone would use the same methods against him personally.

His phone rang.

Vanessa.

He almost didn't answer.

"Hello.""

"Where are you?""

"Working.""

"You left without saying goodbye.""

Roberto looked at the forged document.

"Did you miss me?""

A pause.

"You sound angry.""

"I am.""

Another pause.

Then Vanessa's voice softened.

"Roberto, whatever María told you, she is manipulating you.""

"Why would she do that?""

"Because she knows if you start asking questions, she loses everything.""

"Interesting.""

"What?""

"You always assume people have a reason to betray me.""

Silence.

Then:

"Come home. We need to talk.""

"I agree.""

His voice became colder.

"We do.""

That evening, Vanessa waited in the living room.

She looked nervous.

Not guilty.

Nervous.

There was a difference.

"Roberto, I love you.""

He almost laughed.

"Do you?""

Her eyes narrowed.

"What is that supposed to mean?""

"It means I don't know who I'm married to.""

She stepped closer.

"You are letting one old employee destroy our marriage.""

"No.""

He held up the document.

"You did that yourself.""

For the first time, Vanessa's face lost control.

"What did you find?""

There it was.

The question she shouldn't have asked.

Not "What are you talking about?""

Not "What document?""

She already knew.

Roberto noticed.

"You knew.""

She looked away.

"Roberto—"

"You knew.""

The room became silent.

Then Sofía's voice came from the hallway.

"Dad?""

Both adults turned.

Sofía stood there holding her rabbit.

She had heard everything.

Roberto immediately walked toward her.

"Sweetheart, go back to your room.""

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

But firm.

"I want to tell you something.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Sofía, that's enough.""

The little girl flinched.

Roberto saw it.

And this time, he did not ignore it.

"Sofía, tell me.""

She held the rabbit closer.

"Vanessa told me not to tell you.""

Roberto felt his heart stop.

"Tell me what?""

Sofía whispered:

"She said if I told you about Daniel coming to the house, you would send me away.""

Roberto stared.

The name echoed through the room.

Daniel.

The dead man.

The impossible man.

"Who is Daniel?""

Sofía's face turned toward him.

"The man Vanessa says is going to fix everything.""

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A man's voice came from the entrance.

"Vanessa?""

Roberto froze.

May you like

Because he knew that voice.

And he had spent seven years believing he would never hear it again.
