Chapter 8: The Last Piece
Roberto had faced men with weapons.
Men who threatened his company.
Men who promised to destroy him.
None of them terrified him like the sound of his daughter's scream.
He ran upstairs.
"Sofía!""
The hallway was dark.
"Maria!""
No answer.
Then he saw the bedroom door open.
Too open.
His heart stopped.
Inside, Sofía was standing beside the bed.
And María was holding her hand.
Safe.
Roberto nearly collapsed.
Then he noticed the window.
Open.
A note sat on the floor.
He picked it up.
Three words.
*You were warned.*
Behind him, Vanessa appeared.
She looked terrified.
"Is she okay?""
Roberto turned.
For a moment, he wanted to hate her.
It would have been easier.
But then he saw her face.
Real fear.
Not an act.
"What did your brother want?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I don't know.""
"Don't lie.""
"I swear.""
Roberto held the note.
"Your family has been controlling my life for years.""
She whispered:
"I know.""
"Then help me end this.""
The words surprised both of them.
Vanessa looked at him.
"You still trust me?""
"No.""
The answer hurt her.
"But I need the truth.""
For the first time, she nodded.
"I'll give it to you.""
The next hour changed everything.
Vanessa opened every hidden account.
Every file.
Every secret.
She admitted she had entered Roberto's life with an agenda.
She admitted she had wanted control.
But she claimed she never wanted Sofía harmed.
Roberto listened.
Not because he forgave her.
Because he needed answers.
"What was Mateo's real plan?""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"He wanted revenge.""
"Against me?""
"Against everyone with the Alvarez name.""
"Why?""
She swallowed.
"Because he believed your family stole our future.""
Roberto looked at Daniel.
"And my father?""
Daniel nodded.
"He made mistakes.""
A bitter smile crossed Roberto's face.
"Mistakes.""
Daniel looked at him.
"Roberto, your father spent his life believing power protected people.""
"And?""
"And eventually he forgot that power destroys people too.""
The next morning, Roberto went to Alvarez Holdings.
The board was waiting.
They had heard rumors.
They expected weakness.
Instead, Roberto walked into the room carrying every document.
"I want everyone to understand something.""
The executives became silent.
"This company was built on ambition.""
He placed the files down.
"But if it was built on lies, then it does not deserve to survive.""
Nobody spoke.
Then one board member stood.
"Roberto, are you accusing your father?""
He looked at the portrait on the wall.
"No.""
A pause.
"I'm accusing the choices he made.""
For the first time in years, Roberto felt free.
Not because the truth was painless.
Because he finally stopped running from it.
That evening, he returned home.
Sofía was waiting.
"Dad?""
He smiled.
"Yes?""
"Are we okay?""
Roberto knelt.
"We're going to be.""
She touched his face.
"Promise?""
He looked at his daughter.
The promise mattered.
More than money.
More than companies.
More than his father's legacy.
"I promise.""
Later that night, Roberto sat alone with the final file Daniel had given him.
He opened it.
There was one last document.
One final secret.
A birth certificate.
His hands froze.
Because the name written on it was not Sofía's.
It belonged to someone else.
Someone connected to him.
Someone who had been hidden for years.
And at the bottom of the page was a signature.
May you like
His own.
A signature he didn't remember making.
