Chapter 7: The Accident That Wasn't
The rain started before sunrise.
Roberto stood by the window watching the city disappear behind gray clouds.
He had spent his entire life believing his father was strict.
Cold.
Difficult.
But necessary.
A hard man in a hard world.
Now he wondered if he had confused cruelty with strength.
Daniel arrived at noon.
Roberto didn't offer him coffee.
Didn't offer him a seat.
Too much had changed.
"Tell me about the accident.""
Daniel looked tired.
"The official story?""
"I want the truth.""
Daniel nodded.
"I was investigating your father.""
Roberto said nothing.
"I discovered he was using Alvarez Holdings to move illegal money through private accounts.""
The words landed heavily.
"My father?""
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Because he believed control mattered more than morality.""
Roberto looked away.
"That sounds like him.""
Daniel continued.
"When he discovered I knew, he confronted me.""
"What happened?""
"He offered me money.""
Roberto laughed bitterly.
"Of course.""
"I refused.""
Daniel looked down.
"Three days later, my car went off the road.""
Roberto stared.
"You survived.""
"Because someone pulled me out.""
"Who?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Your father.""
The answer shocked him.
"What?""
"He realized someone else had taken things too far.""
Roberto stepped back.
"So my father tried to kill you?""
"No.""
Daniel looked at him.
"He tried to stop the person who did.""
The pieces refused to fit.
"Then who caused the accident?""
Daniel placed another file on the table.
Inside was a police report.
A name.
A witness.
A payment.
Roberto read slowly.
Then stopped.
Because the witness was someone he knew.
Someone who had worked for his family for years.
Someone who had access to everything.
"Vanessa?""
Daniel nodded.
"No.""
He pointed to the document.
"Her brother.""
Roberto looked up.
"She has a brother?""
"She told everyone he died.""
A chill moved through him.
"Why?""
"Because he was the one who carried out the plan.""
That evening, Roberto confronted Vanessa.
She was sitting in the living room.
Almost as if she expected him.
"Your brother is alive.""
Her face went still.
A second later, she closed her eyes.
"You found out.""
"Why didn't you tell me?""
"Because you would never understand.""
"No.""
Roberto's voice hardened.
"Because you never trusted me.""
Vanessa looked at him.
"I trusted you.""
"Then why?""
"Because every man in your family destroys people and calls it business.""
"That doesn't answer my question.""
She stood.
"My brother lost everything because of your father.""
"So you decided my daughter should pay?""
Her face fell.
For the first time, she looked ashamed.
"I never planned for that.""
"But you allowed it.""
She didn't deny it.
That was the answer.
Roberto turned away.
"Where is your brother?""
Vanessa was silent.
"Where is he?""
A tear moved down her face.
"He's close.""
The front door opened.
Both of them turned.
A man's voice came from the hallway.
"Vanessa.""
Roberto froze.
A man stepped into view.
Older.
Angrier.
His eyes locked on Roberto.
"Hello, Alvarez.""
Vanessa whispered:
"Mateo, don't.""
The man smiled.
A smile without warmth.
"After everything we've waited for?""
Roberto felt something dangerous in the room.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Something planned.
Mateo looked toward the staircase.
Toward Sofía's room.
And Roberto immediately stepped forward.
"Don't even think about it.""
Mateo laughed.
"That's your weakness.""
"What?""
"Your daughter.""
May you like
The lights suddenly went out.
And from upstairs came a scream.
