Chapter 9: The Wife Behind the Smile

Nobody moved.

Vanessa Carter stood at the top of the basement stairs, one hand gripping the railing, the other holding a gun.

The same woman who had walked through the ballroom earlier with perfect posture.

The same woman who had smiled for cameras.

The same woman who had poured champagne while her daughter was locked behind a wall.

Now she stood beneath the cold basement lights with a weapon pointed at the people who knew too much.

Rachel felt Lily's fingers tighten around hers.

"It's okay," Rachel whispered.

But she wasn't sure if she was saying it to Lily or herself.

Daniel looked up at his wife.

And for the first time, Rachel saw something unexpected.

Not relief.

Not gratitude.

Fear.

"Vanessa.""

Her name came out like a warning.

Vanessa ignored him.

"Everyone move away from the stairs.""

Nobody moved.

Her hand shook slightly.

Not enough for the others to notice.

But Rachel noticed.

Because fear looked different on people who spent their whole lives pretending they had none.

"Vanessa," Daniel said again.

"Give me the gun.""

A strange expression crossed her face.

Almost a smile.

"You still think you can tell me what to do.""

The basement went silent.

Daniel stared at her.

"What are you talking about?""

Vanessa stepped down one stair.

"You always did that.""

Another step.

"You controlled everything.""

Another.

"The company.""

"The money.""

"The stories.""

"The lies.""

Rachel watched Daniel carefully.

This wasn't the behavior of a woman protecting him.

This was a woman finally breaking.

Claire looked at Vanessa with confusion.

"Why are you here?""

Vanessa looked at her daughter.

And for a moment, something human appeared.

Pain.

"I came because I knew he would eventually bring you here.""

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You followed me?""

"No.""

Vanessa laughed softly.

"I watched you.""

Nobody spoke.

Rachel felt the weight of the words.

Watched.

Not trusted.

Not loved.

Watched.

Vanessa reached the bottom step.

She kept the gun lowered slightly.

"Six years ago, when Ethan ran away, Daniel told everyone he was unstable.""

Ethan looked at her.

"You let him.""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"I did.""

The admission shocked everyone.

Even Daniel.

"You don't get to rewrite history now.""

Vanessa turned toward him.

"I know exactly what I did.""

Her voice cracked.

"And I know exactly what you did.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Be careful.""

Vanessa looked at him.

"No.""

She raised the gun slightly.

"Tonight, you be careful.""

Rachel stared between them.

"Someone needs to explain.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"You want the truth?""

Rachel nodded.

"Yes.""

Vanessa took a breath.

"The truth is that Daniel Carter was never afraid of losing money.""

She looked at Claire.

"He was afraid of losing control.""

Claire lowered her eyes.

Vanessa continued.

"When Ethan discovered the documents, Daniel didn't plan to kill him.""

Ethan looked surprised.

"He didn't?""

"No.""

Vanessa swallowed.

"Because Daniel thought he could fix the problem.""

Rachel felt sick.

"How?""

Vanessa looked toward the hidden room.

"By making Ethan disappear.""

The words hung in the air.

Ethan's face went pale.

"Disappear how?""

Vanessa didn't answer immediately.

Because the next words seemed difficult.

"By convincing everyone you ran away.""

Rachel stared.

"But Claire knew.""

Vanessa nodded.

"Claire saw what happened.""

Claire looked down.

"She saw Daniel take Ethan's evidence.""

Ethan clenched his fists.

"He took the flash drive.""

Vanessa nodded.

"And Claire tried to stop him.""

Rachel looked at the girl who had survived years in hiding.

"What did he do?""

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"He locked her away.""

Silence.

Daniel laughed once.

A cold, bitter sound.

"You make it sound so simple.""

Vanessa turned.

"Because it is simple.""

"No.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"You don't understand what I was protecting.""

Rachel felt disgust.

"Protecting what?""

Daniel looked at his wife.

"All of us.""

Nobody answered.

He continued.

"You think the world would forgive us if they knew the truth?""

Claire whispered:

"The truth about what?""

Daniel looked at her.

"You really don't remember.""

Claire froze.

Rachel noticed immediately.

Something was wrong.

"What don't you remember?""

Daniel smiled.

"Ask her.""

Claire looked confused.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Daniel took another step.

"Six years ago, Claire didn't just find my records.""

Ethan looked at him.

"What?""

Daniel looked directly at Rachel.

"She found out what happened before she was born.""

Vanessa's face changed.

"Daniel.""

"No.""

His voice became louder.

"No more lies.""

Rachel looked at Claire.

"What does he mean?""

Claire backed away.

"I don't know.""

Daniel smiled.

"Of course you don't.""

He looked at Vanessa.

"Because you erased it.""

The accusation stunned everyone.

Vanessa went still.

Rachel's voice lowered.

"Erased what?""

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

"Her memories.""

The room seemed to tilt.

Rachel stared.

"What?""

Vanessa looked broken.

"When Claire was younger, Daniel discovered she had witnessed things she shouldn't have.""

Claire touched her head.

"I don't understand.""

Vanessa cried silently.

"So he convinced me.""

Rachel felt anger rising.

"Convinced you to do what?""

Vanessa looked at Claire.

"I'm sorry.""

The apology was filled with years of guilt.

"What did you do?""

Vanessa whispered:

"I helped him make her forget.""

Nobody spoke.

Even Daniel looked surprised.

Maybe because he hadn't expected Vanessa to confess.

Rachel stared at her.

"You drugged your own daughter?""

Vanessa shook her head.

"Not at first.""

Her voice broke.

"He manipulated me. He said it was temporary. He said he was protecting her.""

Claire stepped back.

"Mom.""

Vanessa looked at her.

"I was wrong.""

The basement became painfully quiet.

Then Claire whispered:

"Why?""

Vanessa couldn't answer.

Because there was no answer that could fix it.

A sudden sound interrupted them.

Sirens.

Far away.

But getting closer.

Daniel looked toward the ceiling.

His expression changed.

"You called them.""

Rachel didn't respond.

She didn't need to.

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"You brought them here?""

Vanessa lowered the gun.

"No.""

She looked at Rachel.

"I did.""

Daniel's face darkened.

And then, for the first time all night, he stopped pretending.

The calm disappeared.

The smile disappeared.

The mask fell away.

"You stupid woman.""

Vanessa flinched.

Rachel saw it.

The old fear.

The years of control.

But this time Vanessa didn't step back.

"No.""

Her voice was quiet.

"I was stupid for believing you.""

The basement door above shook.

Police were trying to enter.

Daniel looked around.

Searching.

Calculating.

Rachel knew that expression.

A person who had spent his entire life escaping consequences.

Then Daniel looked at Lily.

And smiled.

May you like

Rachel's blood turned cold.

Because everyone knew what he was thinking.
