Chapter 5: The Lie Ethan Told
For three seconds, nobody moved.
The ringing phone had stopped, but the woman's words remained.
Ask him why he lied.
Rachel looked at Ethan.
The young man who had appeared moments ago as a victim.
The boy who had supposedly been erased by his own father.
The brother who had held Lily like he was terrified she would disappear again.
Now he stood frozen.
And Rachel noticed something she hadn't seen before.
Not fear of Daniel.
Fear of the truth.
"Ethan," Rachel said quietly.
He didn't answer.
"Ethan.""
His eyes lifted.
"I can explain.""
Rachel hated those words.
Because people only said them when there was something they didn't want explained.
Sophie stepped away from the wall.
"What did she mean?""
Ethan looked at her.
"Sophie—"
"No.""
Her voice cracked.
"No, don't do that. Don't say my name like that makes this disappear.""
The mansion outside continued its celebration.
Music.
Laughter.
Glasses clinking.
The contrast felt almost cruel.
The richest people in the city were celebrating ten feet away while a family was falling apart in a hidden room.
Rachel crossed her arms.
"Start talking.""
Ethan looked at Lily.
The little girl was watching him carefully.
Waiting.
That seemed to hurt him more than Rachel's anger.
"Six years ago," Ethan began, "I did disappear.""
Rachel frowned.
"We know.""
"No.""
He shook his head.
"You know what Daniel told people.""
The room became still.
Ethan sat down slowly.
"I wasn't kidnapped.""
Margaret covered her mouth.
Sophie stared.
"What are you saying?""
Ethan looked at the floor.
"I ran.""
Rachel felt the answer land harder than expected.
"Why?""
He didn't respond immediately.
Because whatever the reason was, it was heavy.
"I found something in my father's office.""
"The financial records?"" Rachel asked.
Ethan shook his head.
"Something worse.""
He looked at Lily.
"I found videos.""
The air changed.
"What kind of videos?"" Rachel asked.
Ethan's face tightened.
"Videos of children.""
Lily immediately grabbed Rachel's hand.
Rachel felt her stomach turn.
"Children?""
Ethan nodded.
"My father had a private collection of recordings. Not because he enjoyed watching them.""
Rachel stared.
"Then why?""
"Because he used them.""
Nobody spoke.
Ethan continued.
"He recorded people who owed him money. People who worked for him. Families who needed help.""
Margaret's expression hardened.
"He blackmailed them.""
Ethan nodded.
"He created situations where people had no choice but to obey him.""
Rachel looked toward the hallway.
Daniel Carter.
The generous billionaire.
The man who donated millions.
The man everyone trusted.
A monster hidden behind a perfect smile.
"So you found the videos," Rachel said.
"And then what?""
Ethan rubbed his hands together.
"I confronted him.""
"And?""
"He knew.""
The answer came quietly.
"He knew I had seen them.""
Rachel waited.
Ethan looked at Sophie.
"That night, my father told me something I'll never forget.""
His voice lowered.
"He said, 'A family protects itself. Even when one member becomes a problem.''"
Sophie looked sick.
"What happened after that?""
"I ran.""
Rachel nodded slowly.
"That explains why you disappeared.""
"No.""
Ethan looked up.
"It doesn't.""
A silence.
"I didn't just run away.""
Rachel frowned.
"What else?""
"I took copies.""
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small flash drive.
"I knew nobody would believe a seven-year-old kid accusing his billionaire father.""
Rachel stared at the drive.
"So you hid the evidence.""
"Yes.""
"Where?""
Ethan looked toward the floor.
"Somewhere Daniel couldn't find it.""
Sophie stepped closer.
"Where?""
Ethan didn't answer.
Rachel noticed Lily looking at him.
"You promised.""
Everyone turned.
Lily's voice was tiny.
Ethan froze.
"What?""
"You promised you would come back.""
His face broke.
"Lily—"
"You promised.""
Rachel looked between them.
"You left her?""
Ethan closed his eyes.
"I thought I was protecting her.""
"But she was four.""
"I know.""
His voice cracked.
"I know.""
The room became quiet.
Rachel didn't know what to feel.
Anger.
Sympathy.
Both.
Ethan had been a child when he ran.
But Lily had been a child left behind.
A sudden sound interrupted them.
A loud crash from upstairs.
Everyone froze.
Margaret moved toward the door.
"No.""
Rachel looked at her.
"What?""
Margaret whispered:
"Daniel found us.""
The service room lights went out.
Again.
But this time, nobody screamed.
Because everyone understood.
The darkness was not an accident.
Someone was controlling it.
A moment later, the door unlocked.
Slowly.
Then opened.
Daniel Carter stood there.
His tuxedo was still perfect.
His hair was still neat.
His smile was still in place.
But now Rachel saw the person underneath.
"You have caused quite a scene tonight.""
Nobody answered.
Daniel looked at Ethan.
"Come home.""
Ethan stepped forward.
"No.""
Daniel sighed.
"I was hoping we could avoid this.""
Rachel moved between them.
"You locked your daughter behind a wall.""
Daniel's eyes shifted to her.
"Careful.""
"Why? Afraid people will hear the truth?""
Daniel smiled.
"Rachel, the truth is a complicated thing.""
He looked at Ethan.
"Especially when someone has been lying for six years.""
Ethan's expression changed.
Daniel continued.
"Tell them where you really were the night you disappeared.""
Rachel looked at Ethan.
"Ethan?""
He didn't speak.
Daniel smiled wider.
"Go ahead.""
The silence became unbearable.
Then Ethan whispered:
"I wasn't alone.""
Rachel felt cold.
"Who were you with?""
Ethan looked toward Lily.
May you like
And said:
"Your sister.""
