Chapter 8: The Woman Who Survived

The woman stood in the doorway of the hidden room like a ghost returning from a grave.

Nobody spoke.

Not even Daniel.

Rachel looked at the woman.

Then at Daniel.

"You said she was dead.""

Daniel's face had lost all color.

The woman laughed quietly.

A tired, broken sound.

"He said many things.""

She stepped into the light.

Rachel noticed the details.

The scars.

The thin wrists.

The way she moved carefully, like someone who had spent years learning not to make noise.

Ethan stared.

"No.""

The woman's eyes moved toward him.

"Ethan.""

His knees almost gave out.

"Claire?""

She smiled.

But there was no happiness in it.

Only pain.

"You got so tall.""

Ethan covered his mouth.

For six years, he had believed his sister was gone.

Now she was standing in front of him.

Alive.

Rachel watched as Ethan walked toward her.

Slowly.

Like he was afraid she would disappear.

"I thought you were dead.""

Claire looked down.

"I wanted you to think that.""

"Why?""

"Because if Daniel found out you knew I was alive...""

She didn't finish.

She didn't need to.

Ethan hugged her.

And Claire finally broke.

Years of fear came out in one moment.

She cried into his shoulder.

"I waited for you.""

The sentence destroyed him.

"I know.""

"No.""

Her voice cracked.

"You don't.""

Rachel looked away.

Some pain was too private to witness.

After a moment, Claire pulled back.

She looked at Lily.

Her expression softened.

"You found her.""

Lily stepped forward.

"Claire?""

The older woman smiled.

"Hi, little star.""

Lily immediately hugged her.

Rachel felt tears burn her eyes.

Because somehow, in the middle of a mansion built on lies, these two children had found each other again.

Daniel moved suddenly.

Rachel noticed.

He wasn't looking at Claire.

He was looking at the notebook Ethan held.

"You don't understand what you're doing.""

Claire turned.

"I understand perfectly.""

Daniel's voice hardened.

"You were always dramatic.""

Claire flinched.

Rachel noticed.

Even after all these years, his words still had power.

Rachel stepped between them.

"No more.""

Daniel looked at her.

"You think you're brave.""

"I know I'm right.""

He smiled slightly.

"Do you?""

Rachel frowned.

"What does that mean?""

Daniel looked at Ethan.

"Ask him.""

Everyone turned.

Again.

The same game.

The same accusation.

Claire's face changed.

"Ethan.""

He looked at her.

She whispered:

"You never told them.""

Rachel felt tension rise.

"Told us what?""

Ethan closed his eyes.

"I didn't know how.""

Claire looked hurt.

"You promised.""

The same word Lily had used.

Promised.

Rachel stared.

"What promise?""

Ethan looked at the floor.

"When I escaped, I promised Claire I would come back.""

Silence.

"But I didn't.""

"Why?""

He looked at Rachel.

"Because I found out Daniel was searching for me.""

Rachel waited.

"And?""

"I got scared.""

Claire nodded slowly.

"He left.""

Ethan looked destroyed.

"I was seven.""

Claire's eyes filled.

"And I was eight.""

Nobody spoke.

The truth wasn't simple.

There were no perfect victims.

No easy answers.

Only children trying to survive adults who had failed them.

Then Daniel smiled.

Rachel noticed.

He was no longer afraid.

Because he had found something.

A weakness.

"You see?""

Daniel said.

"They all have secrets.""

Claire turned toward him.

"You don't get to use that.""

Daniel ignored her.

"The police will believe me.""

Rachel laughed.

"What?""

Daniel looked calm again.

"They will see a billionaire father accused by unstable people with no evidence.""

Ethan held up the notebook.

"We have evidence.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

He looked toward Rachel.

"You have a notebook found in a hidden room.""

Then he smiled.

"But you don't have the one thing that matters.""

Rachel frowned.

"What?""

Daniel stepped closer.

"Someone who can testify.""

The basement door above them slammed shut.

Everyone looked up.

Daniel's smile returned.

"You should have checked who came with me.""

Rachel's blood ran cold.

Footsteps moved above.

More than one person.

Daniel looked at them.

"Because tonight, the Carter family secret stays buried.""

Then a voice came from the staircase.

A voice Rachel recognized.

The voice of the person who had called her.

The voice that warned her.

"Actually...""

Everyone turned.

The woman stepped into view.

Rachel froze.

Because she knew her.

Everyone did.

She was the person whose charity events had made Daniel Carter famous.

The person who had defended him for years.

May you like

Vanessa Carter.

And she was holding a gun.
