Chapter 3: The Boy in the Photograph

Rachel spent the next five minutes trying to convince herself she was not standing inside a billionaire's mansion holding evidence of a crime.

It didn't work.

The photograph trembled slightly between her fingers.

Ethan Carter.

Missing.

Six years ago.

She remembered the news coverage.

Every television station had shown the same picture.

A seven-year-old boy with dark hair and a nervous smile.

The son of one of America's richest couples.

The child who vanished during a family vacation.

The case that had gone cold.

Rachel looked at Lily.

"You knew about Ethan?""

The little girl nodded.

"He was my brother.""

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Daniel and Vanessa told everyone he ran away.""

Rachel's voice lowered.

"Did he?""

Silence.

Then Margaret said:

"No.""

The answer was so certain that Rachel felt the air leave her lungs.

"What happened?""

Margaret looked toward the empty ballroom.

"We need to leave this hallway.""

They moved into a small service room behind the kitchen.

The mansion was still full of guests, but nobody seemed to notice three people hiding away from the celebration.

That was the strangest part.

Everyone was still drinking champagne.

Still laughing.

Still pretending.

Rachel sat Lily down and gave her water.

Margaret stood by the door.

"I should have spoken years ago.""

Rachel looked at her.

"Why didn't you?""

The older woman looked ashamed.

"Because fear is a powerful thing.""

Rachel thought about Vanessa's calm expression.

Daniel's confidence.

The guards.

"I need the truth.""

Margaret nodded.

"Six years ago, Ethan discovered something.""

"What?""

Margaret hesitated.

Then whispered:

"That Daniel Carter wasn't the man everyone believed he was.""

A sound came from outside.

Footsteps.

All three froze.

Margaret turned off the small lamp.

The door handle moved.

Rachel held her breath.

Then the door opened.

A young man stood there.

Not a guard.

Not Daniel.

Not Vanessa.

He was wearing a waiter uniform.

His face was pale.

His eyes went directly to Lily.

"Lily.""

The little girl gasped.

"Ethan?""

Rachel stared.

The missing boy.

Impossible.

The young man stepped inside and closed the door.

"I didn't think I'd see you again.""

Lily ran to him.

Rachel watched as he hugged his little sister.

The emotion on his face was devastating.

Relief.

Pain.

Guilt.

All mixed together.

Rachel looked at Margaret.

"You knew?""

Margaret nodded.

"I found him years ago.""

Rachel turned.

"Found him?""

Ethan looked at her.

"My father tried to erase me.""

The words were quiet.

But they carried years of suffering.

Rachel stepped closer.

"Tell me everything.""

Ethan looked down at Lily.

"When I was seven, I found documents in my father's office.""

"What kind of documents?""

"About the company.""

Rachel waited.

Ethan continued.

"My father had been hiding money. A lot of money.""

Margaret added:

"He wasn't just stealing from investors.""

She looked at Lily.

"He was stealing from people who trusted him.""

Rachel frowned.

"But why hide Ethan?""

Ethan's jaw tightened.

"Because I told my mother.""

A heavy silence followed.

"And she believed him instead of me.""

Rachel looked at Vanessa in her mind.

The perfect wife.

The perfect mother.

"Your mother knew?""

Ethan nodded.

"She helped him.""

Lily started crying.

"No.""

Ethan immediately knelt.

"Lily.""

"Mommy loves us.""

His expression broke.

"I know you want to believe that.""

The little girl covered her ears.

Rachel felt helpless.

Then Ethan pulled something from his pocket.

A small metal key.

"What is that?""

Ethan looked at Rachel.

"The reason they kept Lily hidden.""

He placed the key on the table.

"My father has a private room beneath this house.""

Margaret's face went pale.

"Don't.""

Ethan looked at her.

"We can't keep hiding.""

Rachel stared at the key.

"What is inside?""

Ethan didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

"Proof.""

A noise came from the hallway.

Someone was outside.

Ethan grabbed the key.

"He's here.""

Rachel whispered:

"Who?""

Ethan looked toward the door.

May you like

"My father.""

The handle began to turn.
