Chapter 7: The Room Nobody Was Supposed to Find
The basement entrance was hidden behind a bookshelf.
Rachel should have expected that.
Everything in the Carter mansion was designed to hide something.
The walls.
The paintings.
The smiles.
Daniel walked ahead of them carrying a flashlight.
Nobody trusted him.
But everyone followed.
Because sometimes the truth was more frightening than the person leading you toward it.
The hidden staircase descended beneath the mansion.
The air became colder with every step.
Rachel held Lily's hand.
Ethan walked beside them.
Neither spoke.
Finally, Sophie whispered:
"How long?""
Ethan looked at her.
"What?""
"How long did you know?""
He didn't answer.
Sophie looked away.
"You knew about Claire.""
"I knew she existed.""
"And you said nothing.""
"I was a child.""
Sophie swallowed.
"So was she.""
The words hurt.
Ethan stopped walking.
"I know.""
The basement door appeared ahead.
Daniel unlocked it.
Rachel noticed his hand shaking.
For the first time, he looked nervous.
Interesting.
A man like Daniel Carter wasn't afraid of police.
He wasn't afraid of accusations.
But this room scared him.
The door opened.
Inside was not a dungeon.
That would have been easier.
It was a bedroom.
A child's bedroom.
Pink curtains.
A small bed.
Books on shelves.
Toys arranged neatly.
Frozen in time.
Rachel stepped inside.
"She lived here?""
Daniel didn't answer.
Ethan walked toward the desk.
His fingers touched the surface.
"Claire's room.""
A photograph sat beside the bed.
Rachel picked it up.
A little girl smiled at the camera.
She had dark hair.
Gray eyes.
The same eyes as Lily.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
"She was your daughter.""
Daniel said nothing.
Then Ethan opened a drawer.
Inside was a notebook.
His face changed.
"What?""
Rachel moved closer.
He opened it.
The handwriting was messy.
Childlike.
But the words were clear.
Page after page.
Names.
Dates.
Numbers.
Records.
Rachel read one line.
"People who disappeared.""
Her stomach dropped.
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"No.""
Ethan closed the notebook.
"This is what Claire found.""
Daniel's voice became sharp.
"Give it to me.""
"No.""
For the first time, Ethan looked stronger than afraid.
"You destroyed her because she knew.""
Daniel's expression changed.
"You don't understand.""
"No.""
Ethan held the notebook tighter.
"I understand everything.""
Rachel looked around the room.
"Where is Claire?""
Nobody answered.
Then Lily walked toward the wall.
She touched a small mark near the floor.
Rachel noticed it.
A tiny drawing carved into the wood.
A star.
Lily whispered:
"She was here.""
Ethan rushed over.
"What?""
Lily touched the carving.
"Claire made this.""
Rachel looked at the wall.
"There was another room.""
Daniel went pale.
Rachel saw it.
The smallest reaction.
But enough.
"You know.""
Daniel said nothing.
Ethan pushed against the wall.
Nothing.
Then Lily pressed the star.
A click.
Everyone froze.
The wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
Rachel's heart raced.
The hidden room.
The hidden room inside the hidden room.
Ethan stepped forward.
"No.""
Rachel looked at him.
"What?""
He stared into the darkness.
"That's where I found her.""
The flashlight moved forward.
Dust.
Old papers.
A broken chair.
And on the floor...
A small bracelet.
Ethan picked it up.
His hands shook.
"It was hers.""
Rachel looked at him.
"You found Claire here?""
He nodded.
"But she wasn't alone.""
A sound came from deeper inside the passage.
Everyone froze.
A faint movement.
A breath.
Rachel whispered:
"Someone is there.""
The flashlight moved.
A figure stepped out of the darkness.
An older woman.
Thin.
Pale.
Alive.
Rachel stopped breathing.
The woman looked directly at Daniel.
Then whispered:
"You told them I was dead.""
Daniel stepped backward.
May you like
For the first time all night...
Daniel Carter looked terrified.
