Chapter 7: The Family They Built on Lies

I arrived at James Carter’s office before sunrise.

I barely slept.

Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the same things.

Linda’s hand.

Daniel staying silent.

The contract.

The signature.

My own husband’s name beside my mother-in-law’s.

James was waiting with a stack of files.

My father sat beside him.

Neither man looked relieved.

That scared me.

“What happened?””

James pushed a document toward me.

“This is the original agreement.””

I looked at the page.

There were two signatures.

Linda Harrington.

Daniel Harrington.

And underneath them:

A section titled: FAMILY TRUST TRANSFER.

I felt sick.

“What is this?””

James answered carefully.

“Your father’s company was never the only thing Linda wanted.””

My father looked at me.

“She wanted your inheritance.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

James continued.

“Linda discovered that after your grandfather passed away, you were the beneficiary of a private family trust.””

I shook my head.

“I never knew.””

“You weren’t supposed to.””

My father sighed.

“Your grandfather created it before you were born. It was protected.””

I looked at Daniel.

“So she married me for my money.””

Daniel’s eyes filled with regret.

“Yes.””

The answer was quiet.

But it destroyed whatever hope remained.

I stood.

“I need air.””

Outside the office, I leaned against the building.

My father followed.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“For what?””

“For not protecting you.””

I shook my head.

“Dad, this isn’t your fault.””

He looked away.

“I spent years teaching you to be strong. I forgot strong people still deserve protection.””

That was the first time I saw my father cry.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just one tear.

And somehow that hurt more.

When I returned inside, Daniel was still there.

“I want to explain.””

I looked at him.

“Explain why you signed away my future?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He swallowed.

“Explain why I thought I could fix it.””

I said nothing.

“I never planned to use your money.””

“But you signed.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He closed his eyes.

“Because my mother told me it was temporary. She said once we were married, she would stop.””

I laughed softly.

“You believed her?””

“I wanted to.””

“That’s not an excuse.””

“I know.””

For once, he didn’t defend himself.

That almost made it worse.

James walked back in.

“There’s something else.””

I turned.

“What now?””

He placed another file down.

“This was found in Linda’s office.””

Inside were printed messages.

Emails.

Notes.

One line stood out.

Sarah must never discover the truth before the wedding.

My blood ran cold.

“She wrote this?””

James nodded.

“She planned everything.””

I read more.

Daniel must remain obedient.

If he fails, use the evidence.

I looked at Daniel.

“What evidence?””

His face changed.

“Daniel?””

He didn’t answer.

My father stood.

“What did she have on you?””

Daniel looked broken.

“Before I met you, I made a mistake.””

“What kind of mistake?””

He hesitated.

Then:

“I caused an accident.””

The room went silent.

“What accident?””

He looked at the floor.

“One that hurt someone.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Daniel whispered:

“My mother covered it up.””

I stared at him.

And suddenly everything made sense.

The fear.

The control.

The silence.

Linda wasn’t just manipulating Daniel.

She owned him.

James looked at the documents again.

“She used this secret to force him into helping her.””

I looked at Daniel.

“Who was hurt?””

He didn’t answer.

Then his phone rang.

He checked the screen.

His face turned white.

“What?””

I watched him.

“What is it?””

He slowly handed me the phone.

A message was displayed.

From an unknown number.

The words were simple.

But they changed everything.

I know what Daniel did.

And I’m ready to tell Sarah the truth.
