Chapter 5: The Document That Changed Everything

The courtroom remained silent as James Carter unfolded the document.

I watched Linda’s face carefully.

For the first time since I had met her, she looked afraid.

Not annoyed.

Not angry.

Afraid.

The judge adjusted his glasses.

“Mr. Carter, please explain the document.””

James looked at Daniel.

“Before I do, I’d like to confirm something. Mr. Harrington, did you provide this document voluntarily?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

Linda suddenly turned toward him.

“Daniel.””

Her voice carried a warning.

The same warning she had used on him his entire life.

But Daniel didn’t look away.

“No, Mom.””

The courtroom shifted.

Everyone heard it.

Not “Mom” with affection.

Not “Mom” asking for approval.

It was the voice of someone finally breaking free.

James held up the paper.

“This is a signed agreement between Linda Harrington and an individual named Robert Voss.””

My stomach tightened.

The name sounded familiar.

My father leaned closer.

“I know that name.””

James nodded.

“You should. Robert Voss was one of the executives involved in the Harrington Medical acquisition.””

The judge looked at Linda.

“And what does this agreement prove?””

James placed the document on the screen.

“It proves Mrs. Harrington’s actions toward my client were not based on a simple family disagreement. This was retaliation.””

Linda stood immediately.

“That is ridiculous.””

The judge looked at her.

“Sit down, Mrs. Harrington.””

She slowly lowered herself back into her chair.

James continued.

“After Michael Bennett’s company acquired Harrington Medical, Mrs. Harrington believed she had been personally betrayed. She blamed Mr. Bennett for the financial losses that followed.””

My hands tightened around each other.

“But what does that have to do with me?”” I whispered.

James looked at me.

“That’s the part you didn’t know.””

Everyone turned toward him.

“Mrs. Harrington discovered before your wedding that you were Michael Bennett’s daughter.””

My heart sank.

I already knew that.

But the next sentence changed everything.

“She also discovered that you had no involvement in your father’s business decisions.””

I frowned.

“Then why?””

James looked at Linda.

“Because she didn’t want revenge against your father anymore.””

A pause.

“She wanted access.””

The word echoed.

Daniel looked down.

I turned toward him.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“I was going to tell you.””

“Tell me what?””

He swallowed.

“My mother wanted me to marry you because of your family’s wealth.””

The courtroom disappeared.

I stared at him.

“No.””

“Sarah—”

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“You knew?””

“I didn’t know everything at first.””

“But you knew something.””

He looked away.

That was enough.

I remembered every conversation.

Every time Daniel told me money didn’t matter.

Every time he said my family’s success never affected his feelings.

I remembered believing him.

James spoke softly.

“Mrs. Bennett, the evidence shows that Linda Harrington encouraged this marriage for financial reasons.””

The judge looked at Daniel.

“Is that true?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then he nodded.

“Yes.””

Linda suddenly exploded.

“You ungrateful child.””

The entire room looked at her.

She pointed at Daniel.

“Everything I did was for this family.””

Daniel stared at her.

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“You did it for yourself.””

Linda laughed bitterly.

“You think this woman loves you? She ruined everything.””

I felt my anger rise.

But Daniel spoke first.

“She didn’t ruin anything.””

Linda froze.

“She showed me what I was willing to lose.””

For a moment, I almost didn’t recognize him.

Because this was the first time Daniel had defended me.

But it was too late.

The judge reviewed the evidence.

The video.

The emails.

The agreement.

The false accusation.

Then she made her decision.

“Based on the evidence presented, this court finds the allegations against Sarah Bennett unsupported.””

Linda’s face went pale.

But James wasn’t finished.

“There is one more matter.””

The judge looked up.

“What matter?””

James opened another folder.

“Mrs. Harrington violated several privacy and financial laws while attempting to manipulate Mr. Bennett’s company.””

Linda’s lawyer immediately stood.

“Objection.””

The judge considered it.

Then looked at James.

“Proceed.””

Linda stared at him.

“What are you doing?””

James didn’t answer.

He looked at me instead.

“This is bigger than one Christmas dinner.””

And then he revealed something that made my blood run cold.

Linda hadn’t just planned to destroy my family.

May you like

She had planned to destroy my father.

And Daniel had been helping her.
