Chapter 6: The Husband Who Knew Too Much

I couldn’t hear anything after James said those words.

Daniel had been helping her.

The man I married.

The man who held my hand in the hospital when Emma was born.

The man who promised me forever.

My mind searched for another explanation.

There had to be one.

There had to be some missing piece.

But the look on Daniel’s face told me everything.

“Sarah…”

I stood up.

“No.””

The judge looked at me.

“Mrs. Bennett, please remain seated.””

I forced myself back down.

But my eyes never left Daniel.

James continued.

“Mr. Harrington provided access to internal information about Mr. Bennett’s company.””

My father looked shocked.

“Daniel?””

Daniel looked miserable.

“I didn’t give her everything.””

My father’s expression hardened.

“That is your defense?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what is it?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I was scared.””

I almost laughed.

“Scared?””

He nodded.

“My mother threatened me.””

The courtroom went quiet.

Linda’s face changed.

“Don’t.””

Daniel ignored her.

“She told me if I didn’t cooperate, she would ruin my life.””

The judge leaned forward.

“Explain.””

Daniel took a deep breath.

“She had recordings. Messages. Things from when I was younger.””

Linda’s eyes narrowed.

“Daniel.””

He continued.

“She knew I had made mistakes. She used them to control me.””

I looked at him.

“You could have told me.””

“I know.””

“You could have trusted me.””

“I know.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was ashamed.””

That answer hurt more than anger.

Because I understood shame.

But I didn’t understand betrayal.

The hearing ended late that afternoon.

Linda left with her lawyer.

But before she walked out, she stopped beside me.

“You think you won.””

I looked at her.

“I think the truth came out.””

She smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“You still don’t know everything.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She leaned closer.

“Ask your husband what happened six months before your wedding.””

Daniel stepped between us.

“Mom, stop.””

Linda laughed.

“Oh, now you’re protecting her?””

Then she walked away.

That night, Daniel came to my house.

I almost didn’t open the door.

But Emma saw him through the window.

“Daddy!””

My heart broke.

Because children don’t understand betrayal.

They only understand love.

Daniel hugged her.

Then he looked at me.

“I need to tell you everything.””

I crossed my arms.

“You should have done that years ago.””

He nodded.

“You’re right.””

We sat at the kitchen table.

The same place where my father had shown me the documents.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“Six months before our wedding, my mother found out about your father’s company deal.””

I stayed silent.

“She told me to end the relationship.””

“Why?””

“Because she wanted me to marry someone else.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Daniel looked down.

“She had arranged a relationship with the daughter of one of her business partners.””

My jaw tightened.

“So I was just a problem.””

“No.””

“Then what was I?””

He looked at me.

“The first person who ever made me want to choose my own life.””

The words would have meant something years ago.

Not now.

“She threatened you.””

“Yes.””

“And you helped her.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

But at least it was honest.

Daniel reached into his coat.

He placed a small envelope on the table.

“What is that?””

“The reason I finally stopped protecting her.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A contract.

And a handwritten note.

I looked at the signature.

My breathing stopped.

Because it wasn’t Linda’s.

It was Daniel’s.

I looked up.

“You signed this?””

He nodded.

“Before we got married.””

“What is it?””

His voice was barely audible.

“A promise to give my mother control over something.””

I stared at the paper.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me with tears in his eyes.

“Control over our future children.””

My hands went numb.

“What did you just say?””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was James.

I answered.

“Sarah, you need to come back to the office.””

“Why?””

His voice was serious.

“Because we found the original agreement.””

I looked at Daniel.

“And?””

A pause.

May you like

Then James said:

“Your name is not the only one on it.””
