Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Silence

My father arrived at my house twenty minutes after we got home.

He didn’t ask questions immediately.

He walked inside, took off his coat, and checked Emma’s arm where the soup had splashed near her.

Then he looked at me.

The anger in his eyes disappeared.

Only pain remained.

“My girl,” he whispered.

That was when I finally cried.

Not at the slap.

Not at the humiliation.

At the fact that I had spent three years convincing myself I was asking for too much.

The next morning, my father sat across from me at the kitchen table.

A folder rested beside his coffee.

I noticed it.

“What is that?””

He looked at the folder.

“Something I should have shown you a long time ago.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Before he answered, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I stared at his name.

My father didn’t tell me what to do.

He simply said:

“You deserve the truth.””

I answered.

“Hello.””

“Sarah.””

His voice sounded exhausted.

“I need to talk to you.””

“I don’t think I do.””

“Please.””

I closed my eyes.

“What could you possibly say?””

There was a long pause.

Then Daniel said:

“My mother didn’t just insult you because she dislikes you.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She’s angry because of something she found out about your family.””

I looked at my father.

He looked away.

“Daniel, what are you talking about?””

“I should have told you before we got married.””

My heart started beating faster.

“Told me what?””

Another pause.

Then:

“My mother knows about your father’s company.””

I froze.

Everyone knew my father was successful.

But Daniel had always treated my family like a background detail.

“What about it?””

“She knows your father owns the firm that bought Harrington Medical.””

I didn’t understand.

“So?””

Daniel’s voice became smaller.

“My mother’s company lost everything after that deal.””

The kitchen became silent.

My father finally spoke.

“Sarah.””

I covered the phone.

“Dad?””

He nodded.

“She’s blaming me.””

I looked back at Daniel.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

“How long?””

“Before we married.””

The betrayal hurt worse than I expected.

“You knew your mother hated me because of my family.””

“I thought she would get over it.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“You thought?””

“Sarah, I love you.””

“No.””

I stood.

“You loved the version of me who stayed quiet.””

Daniel said nothing.

My father opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Letters.

Documents.

“What is this?””

“Your mother-in-law has been trying to damage my company.””

I looked at the papers.

One email caught my eye.

A message from Linda.

The words were clear.

Make Sarah regret choosing them over us.

My hands went cold.

“She wrote this?””

My father nodded.

“She wanted revenge.””

I ended the call with Daniel.

For the next hour, my father explained everything.

Linda had spent months spreading rumors.

Calling business partners.

Trying to create problems.

But she had failed.

Because my father had evidence.

Then there was a knock at the door.

I looked toward the entrance.

My father stood.

“I wasn’t expecting anyone.””

The door opened.

And Daniel walked in.

I stepped back.

“What are you doing here?””

He looked different.

Not angry.

Not defensive.

Broken.

“I came to tell you the truth.””

My father stared at him.

“You had your chance.””

Daniel looked at me.

“My mother has something planned.””

I crossed my arms.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“She’s going to court.””

My heart stopped.

“For what?””

Daniel looked at the folder on the table.

May you like

Then back at me.

“She’s going to claim you attacked her.””
