Chapter 2: The Man Linda Never Wanted to Meet
My father didn’t raise his voice.
That was what scared people.
When my father was angry, he became quiet.
And everyone who knew him understood that silence meant something was coming.
“Put me on speaker,” he said.
I looked at my phone.
“Dad…”
“Sarah. Put me on speaker.””
I did.
The room listened.
Linda crossed her arms again, but her confidence was gone.
“Who exactly is this?”” she asked.
My father answered before I could.
“This is Michael Bennett.””
The color drained from Linda’s face.
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Mom?””
My father continued.
“I want to know why my daughter called me from your dining room crying.””
Nobody answered.
The silence was unbearable.
Finally, Linda forced a laugh.
“This is a misunderstanding.””
My father’s voice remained calm.
“A misunderstanding doesn’t leave a handprint on someone’s face.””
My fingers touched my cheek.
The pain had finally arrived.
Linda looked away.
Daniel stepped forward.
“Mr. Bennett, this got out of control.””
My father immediately responded.
“Daniel, my daughter has been married to you for three years. I trusted you.””
Daniel swallowed.
“I love Sarah.””
I almost laughed.
Because love was not what I felt sitting there.
Love didn’t watch someone hurt you.
Love didn’t ask you what you did to deserve it.
My father spoke again.
“If you love my daughter, explain why you blamed her.””
Daniel looked at the floor.
No answer.
Emma ran to me.
“Mommy, are we leaving?””
I wrapped my arms around her.
“Yes, sweetheart.””
Linda stepped forward.
“You’re not taking my granddaughter because of one argument.””
I looked at her.
“One argument?””
My voice was quiet.
“Linda, you slapped me.””
She rolled her eyes.
“Oh please. It was just a reaction.””
My father heard that.
And for the first time, his voice changed.
“Sarah, leave the house.””
I picked up my coat.
Daniel followed me into the hallway.
“Sarah, wait.””
I turned.
“What?””
His eyes were wet.
“I made a mistake.””
I stared at him.
“No. You made a choice.””
He shook his head.
“I didn’t know what to do.””
“You knew exactly what to do.””
I pointed toward the dining room.
“You watched.””
“Sarah—”
“You watched your mother hurt me in front of our daughter.””
His face collapsed.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at the man I married.
For years, I had begged him to see what was happening.
Tonight, he finally saw it.
Only because I was leaving.
My father stayed on the phone.
“Sarah?””
“I’m okay.””
“No, you’re not.””
That sentence almost broke me.
Because someone finally said it.
I walked outside.
The cold air hit my face.
Snow landed on my hair.
Behind me, the Harrington house still glowed with Christmas lights.
It looked beautiful.
That was the strangest part.
A place could look beautiful while something ugly happened inside.
Daniel followed me onto the porch.
“Please don’t take Emma away from me.””
I stopped.
“You think this is about taking Emma away?””
“Sarah, please.””
“This is about showing her what love looks like.””
He looked confused.
I continued.
“I don’t want my daughter growing up thinking a woman should accept being hurt just to keep a family together.””
Daniel had no answer.
My father stayed silent on the phone.
Then he said:
“Sarah, send me your location. I’m coming.””
“Dad, you don’t have to.””
“Yes, I do.””
The call ended.
Daniel looked at me.
“Your father is coming here?””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“You don’t understand.””
“What don’t I understand?””
He looked back at the house.
“My mother knows people.””
I almost smiled.
“Daniel, tonight is the first time I realized something.””
“What?””
“I’m not scared of your mother anymore.””
I put Emma into the car.
As I drove away, I watched Daniel standing alone on his parents’ porch.
For the first time in years, he looked small.
May you like
But I didn’t know yet that my father’s arrival would uncover something Daniel had been hiding from me.
Something much worse than his mother’s cruelty.
