Chapter 9: The Recording From The Past
The video loaded slowly.
For a moment, there was only darkness.
Then a room appeared.
My mother’s living room.
I recognized it immediately.
The old blue couch.
The wooden table.
The painting she loved.
My hands began shaking.
Because sitting on that couch was my mother.
Alive.
And across from her…
was Vanessa.
I stopped breathing.
This wasn’t a memory.
This was a recording.
Vanessa’s voice came through the speakers.
“You’re making this harder than it needs to be.””
My mother looked tired.
But strong.
“You’re asking me to give you money that isn’t yours.””
Vanessa smiled.
“You always were dramatic.””
I felt anger rising.
My mother stayed calm.
“You came into my home asking about my accounts.””
“Because I know you’re hiding something.””
“I’m protecting my daughter.””
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Emily is not your only family anymore.””
My fists tightened.
My mother’s expression changed.
“You don’t get to decide what happens to my daughter.””
Vanessa laughed.
“Your daughter?””
Then she said the words that made my entire body go cold.
“You know she’ll never know the truth, right?””
My mother stared at her.
“What truth?””
Vanessa smiled.
“The truth about why you got sick.””
The video froze for a second.
I looked at Rachel.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel looked just as shocked.
The recording continued.
My mother’s voice became shaky.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa leaned closer.
“You think your illness was just bad luck?””
My heart stopped.
I couldn’t move.
My mother whispered:
“What did you do?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I didn’t do anything.””
A pause.
“Not directly.””
The video ended.
The room went silent.
I stared at the black screen.
No one spoke.
Finally, Rachel whispered:
“Emily…”
I couldn’t answer.
Because my entire life had just shifted.
My mother’s death.
The money.
The car.
The secrets.
Everything.
My father walked toward me.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I stepped away.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew something was wrong.””
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed.””
His face collapsed.
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were always scared.””
He looked down.
“I thought I could protect you.””
“You protected yourself.””
The words hurt him.
But they were true.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Vanessa.
Just one sentence.
*You finally found the recording.*
My blood went cold.
A second message appeared.
*Now ask your father why he helped me hide it.*
I looked at my father.
His face turned pale.
Because he knew.
He knew exactly what she was talking about.
“Dad…”
He didn’t answer.
“Did you help her?””
Silence.
Then my father whispered:
“I didn’t know what she was planning.””
My heart sank.
“What did you do?””
He sat down.
And for the first time, he looked terrified.
“I helped Vanessa erase the evidence.””
I stepped back.
The man who had spent years telling me he loved me…
had helped hide the truth about my mother.
But then he said something I never expected.
“I erased it because your mother asked me to.””
I froze.
“What?””
My father looked at me.
“Your mother knew she was running out of time.””
He swallowed.
“She told me if anything happened to her, I had to protect you.””
I stared at him.
“Protect me from what?””
His voice broke.
“From Vanessa.””
A long silence followed.
Then my father whispered:
“But I failed.””
And before I could respond, the front door opened.
Vanessa walked in.
Holding a gun.
May you like
And smiling.
“You finally figured it out.””
