Chapter 5: The Truth My Father Buried

I didn’t sleep after Vanessa told us Tyler was missing.

Not because I cared about him.

I barely knew him.

But because someone had just tried to erase the only person who could prove what Vanessa had done.

The next morning, I went straight to my father’s office.

He was sitting behind his desk, staring at old documents.

He looked older.

Like carrying secrets had aged him overnight.

“Tell me everything.””

He looked up.

“Emily.””

“No more protecting people.””

He closed his eyes.

“I know.””

I placed my mother’s letter on the desk.

“She knew money was missing.””

My father didn’t deny it.

That hurt more than if he had lied.

“How long?””

“Months.””

“Before she died?””

He nodded.

I felt my chest tighten.

“My mother was sick, and you were stealing from her?””

“No.””

His voice broke.

“No, Emily. It wasn’t like that.””

“Then explain.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Vanessa convinced me to invest some of your mother’s money.””

“What money?””

“The account she had created for you.””

My stomach dropped.

“My trust?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You used my inheritance?””

“I was going to put it back.””

“When?””

He had no answer.

“When were you going to put it back, Dad?””

He looked defeated.

“I made mistakes.””

I laughed.

“Mistakes are forgetting someone’s birthday. This was stealing.””

He flinched.

Then he whispered:

“Your mother found out.””

I froze.

“What happened?””

“She confronted Vanessa.””

“When?””

“A week before your mother died.””

The room felt silent.

“What did Vanessa say?””

My father looked toward the window.

“She said your mother was paranoid because of the medication.””

My hands curled into fists.

“My mother was dying.””

“I know.””

“And Vanessa tried to make everyone think she was crazy?””

My father didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

I stood up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

He looked up.

“You were afraid.””

He said nothing.

“You were afraid of losing Vanessa. Afraid of admitting what happened. So you let me believe my mother was just unlucky.””

“Emily…”

I walked away.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

Outside, I called Daniel Harrison.

He answered immediately.

“Emily, I heard about Tyler.””

“Who told you?””

“Your father.””

That surprised me.

“Can you find him?””

“I’m already trying.””

“Daniel, my father admitted he used Mom’s money.””

Silence.

Then:

“I was afraid that was the case.””

My heart stopped.

“You knew?””

“I suspected.””

“How?””

“Because your mother changed the trust documents shortly before she passed.””

“What changed?””

“She added a condition.””

“What condition?””

Daniel hesitated.

“She wrote that if anyone involved in managing her estate attempted to access your inheritance improperly, they would lose all rights connected to her assets.””

I sat down.

“Meaning?””

“Meaning your father and Vanessa could be removed entirely.””

A strange calm came over me.

My mother had planned for this.

She had known.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “why would Vanessa risk everything for that envelope?””

He was quiet.

Then he said:

“Because the envelope doesn’t only contain information about the trust.””

“What else?””

“Evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

Before Daniel answered, I heard a sound behind me.

A car door closing.

I turned.

A black SUV was parked outside my house.

A woman stepped out.

She looked familiar.

Too familiar.

She walked toward me holding a folder.

“Emily Carter?””

I stood.

“Yes?””

She handed me the folder.

“My name is Rachel Moore.””

“Why are you here?””

Her expression was serious.

“Because your mother hired me three years ago.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Rachel looked toward my house.

“She knew this day would come.””

I opened the folder.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Vanessa.

My father.

And another man.

Standing beside a bank.

The date was one month before my mother died.

Rachel pointed at the picture.

“Emily, your mother didn’t hide the money because she was afraid someone would steal it.””

I looked at her.

“Then why?””

May you like

Rachel’s voice dropped.

“She hid it because she discovered someone was planning to make her disappear.””
