Chapter 2: The Secret in the Glove Compartment
I barely slept that night.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the photograph of my mother’s car sitting outside that warehouse.
It wasn’t at a dealership.
It wasn’t with a new owner.
It was somewhere hidden.
And someone wanted me to find it.
At six in the morning, I walked downstairs and found my father sitting alone at the kitchen table.
He looked exhausted.
“Dad,” I said.
He looked up.
“Emily.””
I placed my phone in front of him.
His face changed the second he saw the picture.
That tiny reaction told me everything.
“You know that place?””
He looked away.
“No.””
“Don’t lie to me.””
My father rubbed his forehead.
“Where did you get this?””
“That doesn’t matter.””
“It matters.””
I stared at him.
“Why did you sell Mom’s car?””
His jaw tightened.
“Because Vanessa thought—”
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“I’m done hearing Vanessa’s excuses. I want the truth from you.””
My father stayed silent.
Finally, he whispered, “There were financial problems.””
“What problems?””
He looked at the floor.
“After your mother died, things became harder than you realized.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You mean harder because you spent money?””
His eyes widened.
“What are you talking about?””
I didn’t answer.
Something about his reaction bothered me.
Before I could push further, Vanessa entered the kitchen.
“What’s going on?””
I turned toward her.
“Where is my car?””
She immediately became defensive.
“I told you. It’s gone.””
“Where did you sell it?””
She paused.
Only for a second.
But I noticed.
“To someone who wanted it.””
“Who?””
“That’s not your business.””
I grabbed my phone.
“The car had something inside.””
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“What?””
A small mistake.
A tiny crack in her perfect confidence.
She recovered quickly.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.””
My father looked between us.
“What was inside?””
I watched Vanessa carefully.
“Funny. I was about to ask you both the same thing.””
She slammed her hand on the counter.
“Emily, stop creating drama.””
“Drama?””
I pointed toward her.
“You stole the last thing my mother gave me.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You need to remember who pays the bills here.””
“And you need to remember that stealing isn’t parenting.””
Her face turned red.
“You’re becoming just like your mother.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
For a moment, Vanessa looked afraid.
Then the mask returned.
“It means she always thought she was smarter than everyone else.””
I stared at her.
My mother had been many things.
Kind.
Brave.
Strong.
But Vanessa had never spoken about her like this before.
There was history between them.
A history nobody had told me about.
That afternoon, I went to my mother’s attorney’s office.
Daniel Harrison closed the blinds before speaking.
“Emily, I need you to understand something.””
“What?””
“Your mother didn’t trust everyone around her.””
I sat down.
“You mean my father?””
He didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
“She asked me to prepare documents before she passed,” Daniel said.
“She believed someone might try to access the money she left you.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
“Because she wanted you protected.””
I looked down.
“She knew something was wrong?””
Daniel opened a file.
Inside was a copy of a letter written in my mother’s handwriting.
My hands trembled as I touched the page.
“Read the last paragraph,” he said.
I did.
*Emily, if you are reading this, something happened before I could explain everything. Trust the person who helps you recover the car. Do not trust anyone who tells you the car was worthless.*
My heart raced.
“The car?””
Daniel nodded.
“The envelope in the glove compartment contains instructions.””
“Instructions for what?””
He looked at me.
“To access your inheritance.””
I left his office with one thought.
I needed to find that car.
That evening, I returned home and searched online for anyone who had bought used Honda Civics recently.
Nothing.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice came through.
“Are you Emily Carter?””
“Yes. Who is this?””
“The person who has your mother’s car.””
My grip tightened.
“Where is it?””
A pause.
Then he said something that made my blood run cold.
“I found the envelope.””
My voice shook.
“Who are you?””
Another pause.

Then he whispered:
“I’m the man your stepmother paid to destroy it.””
