Chapter 11: The Name Hidden in My Mother’s Letter
I didn’t stop running until I reached Rachel’s car.
My hands were shaking so badly I could barely open the door.
Rachel started the engine immediately.
“We need to go.””
I looked back at my house.
The place where I had grown up.
The place where my mother’s memories lived.
The place where every person I trusted had hidden something from me.
“Who was she talking about?””
Rachel glanced at me.
“Who?””
“Vanessa said my mother was protecting me from someone else.””
Rachel became quiet.
That silence terrified me.
“You know something.””
“I know your mother was investigating more than Vanessa.””
I turned toward her.
“What does that mean?””
Rachel drove faster.
“Your mother believed Vanessa wasn’t working alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who else?””
“I don’t know.””
“But you have a guess.””
Rachel gripped the steering wheel.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Victor Hale.””
The same name from the photograph.
The man who helped hide money.
The man connected to Vanessa.
I looked at the envelope.
“What else did my mother leave?””
Rachel took us back to her office.
We opened everything.
The letter.
The documents.
The hidden notes.
Then we found something strange.
A small piece of paper tucked inside the envelope.
Only one word was written on it.
*HARRISON.*
I frowned.
“Daniel?””
Rachel nodded.
“Your mother trusted him.””
I called him immediately.
He answered after one ring.
“Emily?””
“Daniel, I need to ask you something.””
A pause.
“What happened?””
“Did my mother ever mention Victor Hale?””
The silence was instant.
Too instant.
My heart sank.
“Daniel.””
“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””
“What way?””
He sighed.
“Your mother discovered Victor was helping Vanessa move money.””
I closed my eyes.
“And you knew?””
“Yes.””
The answer hurt.
“How many people knew?””
“Emily…”
“How many?””
Daniel’s voice lowered.
“More than you think.””
I stood.
“Tell me.””
He hesitated.
Then:
“Your mother believed someone inside her own circle was helping Vanessa.””
“Who?””
“Your mother never proved it.””
“Who did she suspect?””
Another silence.
Then Daniel whispered:
“Me.””
I stopped breathing.
“What?””
“She suspected everyone.””
“Did she suspect you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I had access to her legal documents.””
I looked at Rachel.
This was becoming impossible.
Everyone had a reason.
Everyone had a secret.
Then Daniel said:
“But Emily, there’s something your mother left me.””
“What?””
“A final recording.””
My heart raced.
“Where?””
“I have it.””
“Why didn’t you give it to me?””
“Because your mother instructed me not to.””
“Why?””
Daniel’s voice broke.
“Because she said the recording would only be safe when you were ready to hear the whole truth.””
I felt anger rising.
“I’m tired of people deciding when I’m ready.””
“I know.””
“Send it.””
A long pause.
Then:
“I will.””
A few seconds later, my phone received a file.
I pressed play.
The screen showed my mother sitting in the hospital.
She looked weak.
But her eyes were clear.
“Emily,” she whispered.
I covered my mouth.
Seeing her again hurt.
“My beautiful girl. If you’re watching this, then I’m gone.””
Tears filled my eyes.
My mother continued.
“I need you to know something. The people around you will tell you different versions of the truth.””
She looked directly into the camera.
“But the truth is simple.””
She took a breath.
“Someone I trusted tried to take away your future.””
My heart pounded.
Then she said:
“And the person who helped them was not Vanessa.””
The video paused.
A notification appeared.
*File corrupted.*
I stared at the screen.
“No.””
I tried again.
Nothing.
Then my phone rang.
Daniel.
I answered.
“Emily.””
“Finish the video.””
His voice was urgent.
“I can’t.””
“What do you mean?””
“Because someone just deleted the original.””
I froze.
“Who?””
Daniel whispered:
“The person who knew exactly where I kept it.””
I looked at Rachel.
“Who?””
Daniel answered:
“My assistant.””
A name followed.
A name I recognized.
May you like
Because it was the same name written on my mother’s old documents.
*Rachel Moore.*
