Chapter 8: My Father’s Final Lie

I didn’t open the second envelope until I was somewhere safe.

Rachel took me to her office, a small building above an old bookstore downtown.

She locked the door behind us.

Then she looked at me.

“Whatever is inside that envelope changes everything.””

I stared at the paper in my hands.

My mother’s handwriting was everywhere.

The same handwriting that used to leave notes in my lunch.

The same handwriting that wrote birthday cards.

The same handwriting that now revealed secrets.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

*Emily,*

*If you are reading this, then my fears were correct. Someone tried to take what I left for you.*

I swallowed.

Rachel watched silently.

I continued.

*I need you to understand something. Your father is not the person you think he is. But he is also not the villain everyone will tell you he is.*

I stopped.

My confusion grew.

Not the villain?

Then why warn me?

I kept reading.

*Your father made mistakes. Terrible ones. But Vanessa was the person who pushed him into them.*

My breathing slowed.

My mother knew.

She knew everything.

*Three months before my diagnosis became serious, I discovered money missing from my personal account. At first, I blamed your father. Then I found evidence that Vanessa had been manipulating him.*

I looked at Rachel.

“So she knew.””

Rachel nodded.

“She knew.””

I continued.

*Vanessa wanted access to my assets. She believed I had hidden money somewhere. She became obsessed with finding it.*

My fingers trembled.

Then came the sentence that made me stop.

*The day before I entered the hospital for the last time, Vanessa came to my house. She threatened me.*

My heart pounded.

“What?””

Rachel leaned closer.

“What did she say?””

I read the next line.

*She told me that if I didn’t tell her where the money was hidden, Emily would lose everything after I was gone.*

I covered my mouth.

My mother had been scared.

And I had been too young to notice.

The letter continued.

*I recorded that conversation. The recording is the real reason I hid the second envelope.*

I froze.

“A recording?””

Rachel immediately stood.

“Where?””

I searched the envelope.

There was a small note attached.

*The truth is where your father hides his guilt.*

I looked up.

“My father’s office.””

Rachel frowned.

“What?””

“My mother knew.””

I folded the letter.

“She knew my father kept something.””

That night, I returned home.

The house felt different.

Not because anything had changed.

Because I had.

My father was sitting alone in the living room.

When he saw me, he stood.

“Emily.””

I held the envelope.

His face changed.

“You found it.””

“Yes.””

He closed his eyes.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t.””

My anger exploded.

“You were hoping I wouldn’t find the truth?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

He looked exhausted.

“I was hoping you wouldn’t have to know how badly I failed your mother.””

I stepped closer.

“Tell me everything.””

He looked toward the stairs.

“Vanessa is asleep.””

“I don’t care.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I loved your mother.””

“Then why did you betray her?””

The question broke him.

“I thought I could fix everything.””

“Fix what?””

“The money.””

I waited.

“The lies.””

I waited.

“The fact that Vanessa had been using me.””

My voice softened slightly.

“You knew?””

He nodded.

“I found out too late.””

“Then why stay with her?””

He looked away.

“Because she threatened me.””

I froze.

“With what?””

My father whispered:

“She told me if I left her, she would tell you something about your mother’s death.””

The room went silent.

“What thing?””

My father’s face turned pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“She never told me.””

I stared at him.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A video file.

The sender wrote:

*YOUR FATHER IS STILL LYING. WATCH BEFORE YOU BELIEVE HIM.*

I looked at my father.

May you like

Then at the video.

And I pressed play.
