Chapter 8: The Man Behind The Secrets
Nobody wanted to open the door.
But everyone knew someone eventually would.
The knocking came again.
Three slow knocks.
Not impatient.
Not angry.
Confident.
Like whoever stood outside already knew they belonged there.
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad?””
I shook my head.
“Stay back.””
I walked toward the door.
My hand reached for the lock.
Then Eleanor grabbed my arm.
“Thomas, don’t.””
I looked at her.
“Who is he?””
Her eyes were full of fear.
“Someone who never stopped looking.””
The door opened before I could respond.
Because someone outside had a key.
The lock turned.
The door swung inward.
A man stepped inside.
He was around seventy.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
Calm expression.
The kind of calm that made a person dangerous.
He looked around my house.
Then smiled.
“Thomas Harrison.””
Nobody spoke.
He looked at Eleanor.
“You made this difficult.””
She stepped backward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The man ignored her.
His eyes moved to Daniel.
And then he smiled wider.
“There he is.””
Daniel’s face hardened.
“Who are you?””
The man adjusted his coat.
“My name is Samuel Blake.””
The room went silent.
The name that had appeared on documents.
The name connected to Margaret.
The name behind everything.
Samuel looked at me.
“You have no idea how long I’ve waited for this conversation.””
I clenched my jaw.
“You destroyed my family.””
He laughed softly.
“No.””
He looked around.
“I revealed what was already broken.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Why are you here?””
Samuel looked at him.
“Because you deserve the truth.””
Mia immediately moved closer.
“Tell him.””
I turned toward her.
“You knew he was coming.””
She looked away.
Samuel smiled.
“She was useful.””
Daniel stared at Mia.
“Useful?””
Mia’s face changed.
“I didn’t know everything.””
Samuel laughed.
“You knew enough.””
Daniel looked sick.
The betrayal was finally reaching him.
Not from me.
From her.
Samuel walked toward the table.
He picked up the photograph of Eleanor and me.
“You see, Thomas, you always believed Margaret saved your family.””
He placed the photograph down.
“But Margaret was the one who created the lie.””
I felt anger rising.
“Watch your words.””
Samuel smiled.
“She never told you why she paid me.””
I looked at Eleanor.
Then at the documents.
“Explain.””
Samuel leaned against the table.
“Margaret discovered something about Daniel.””
Daniel stiffened.
“What?””
Samuel looked at him.
“She discovered who your real father was.””
Everyone froze.
I stared.
“That’s impossible.””
Samuel smiled.
“No.””
He pointed at Daniel.
“It’s not.””
Daniel’s voice was barely audible.
“Who?””
Samuel looked directly at him.
“You’ve spent your whole life calling the wrong man father.””
My hands curled into fists.
“You’re lying.””
Samuel shook his head.
“Ask Margaret’s old attorney.””
Claire frowned.
“Why?””
“Because he has the original documents.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Dad…”
I didn’t know what to say.
I had spent thirty-eight years believing I knew the truth.
Now every memory felt uncertain.
Samuel reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
“I came here because I think Thomas deserves to know.””
He placed it on the table.
“This was written by Margaret.””
My heart stopped.
“No.””
Samuel smiled.
“Yes.””
I stared at the envelope.
My wife’s handwriting was visible.
A handwriting I would recognize anywhere.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
On the front were five words.
“Thomas, I am sorry.””
I opened it.
The first line destroyed me.
*I lied to you about Daniel.*
I looked up.
Daniel was watching me.
Waiting.
Samuel stepped closer.
“And now you finally know.””
I unfolded the letter.
May you like
Because after all these years, Margaret’s secret was finally in my hands.
And I was terrified of what my beloved wife had hidden from me.
