Chapter 4: The Secret Margaret Left Behind

The photograph slipped from my fingers.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone was looking at my face.

Waiting.

Waiting for me to explain.

But I couldn’t.

Not immediately.

The woman in the photograph was Eleanor Blake.

My first wife.

The woman I had loved before Margaret.

The woman everyone believed disappeared from my life forever.

Daniel stared at me.

“You were married before Mom?””

I nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Claire looked hurt.

“Dad…”

I sat down.

“I was twenty-eight.””

My voice felt distant.

“Eleanor and I were married for three years.””

“What happened?”” Daniel asked.

I looked at the photograph.

A younger version of myself stared back.

A man who still believed life followed a straight road.

“Eleanor left.””

Mia smiled.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

“She didn’t just leave.””

My eyes moved toward her.

“What are you talking about?””

Mia crossed her arms.

“She disappeared because of what you did.””

The accusation landed differently.

Not like the first one.

This one carried history.

Fear.

A past I had buried.

Daniel looked between us.

“Dad?””

I closed my eyes.

There were memories I had avoided for decades.

Not because I was guilty.

Because they hurt.

“Eleanor was sick,” I said.

Mia immediately interrupted.

“That’s not the whole story.””

“No,” I replied.

My voice became firmer.

“It isn’t.””

I stood.

“My marriage with Eleanor ended because she struggled with addiction. She disappeared after refusing help.””

Daniel watched me.

“And Mom knew?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did she never tell us?””

I looked at Margaret’s photograph.

Because Margaret had protected me.

Because she knew the truth.

Because she knew Eleanor’s family had threatened me years later.

But before I could explain, Claire picked up the photograph again.

“There’s something written on the back.””

She turned it over.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She read silently.

Then looked at me.

“Dad…”

I took the photograph.

Three words were written behind it.

Words that made my hands go numb.

“Ask Margaret why.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel whispered:

“Mom knew?””

I looked at the flowers on the dining table.

White roses.

Margaret’s favorite.

For years, I thought they represented love.

Now they felt like a warning.

Mia stepped closer.

“That’s why I knew you had secrets.””

I stared at her.

“You searched for this.””

She didn’t deny it.

“I needed answers.””

“No,” Claire said.

“You needed leverage.””

Mia looked at her.

“Be careful.””

Claire didn’t move.

“No.””

For the first time that night, my daughter stood beside me.

“You almost destroyed my father because you wanted this house.””

Mia’s expression hardened.

“I wanted what I was owed.””

Daniel looked at her.

“What does that mean?””

Mia said nothing.

And then Daniel’s phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed an unknown number.

He answered.

“Hello?””

Nobody could hear the voice on the other end.

But Daniel’s face slowly changed.

His eyes moved toward me.

Then toward Mia.

“What did you say?””

A pause.

Daniel’s hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

Another pause.

Then he whispered:

“No… that’s impossible.””

He ended the call.

Nobody moved.

Claire asked:

“Daniel?””

He looked at all of us.

Then he looked at Mia.

“The person who just called me…”

His voice broke.

“He said he was my father.””

I stared at my son.

Because Daniel only had one father.

Me.

And then Mia whispered the words that made my entire world collapse.

“Thomas… you should have told them about the baby.””
