Chapter 5: The Child I Never Knew

For five seconds, nobody breathed.

The sentence hung in the room like smoke.

“You should have told them about the baby.””

Mia’s voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

Daniel stared at her.

“What baby?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she looked at me.

And I knew.

She wasn’t trying to reveal the truth.

She was trying to make me panic.

She had spent months digging through my past, searching for something she could use against me.

Now she had found the one thing she believed would destroy everything.

My silence.

Claire looked at me.

“Dad?””

I lowered my eyes.

There were moments in life when a single second could split your entire existence into two parts.

Before.

And after.

This was one of those moments.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Dad, what is she talking about?””

I looked at my son.

The boy who had once asked me if monsters were real.

The boy I had promised I would always protect.

I wanted to tell him everything.

But the truth was complicated.

And complicated truths often sound like lies.

“Daniel…”

My voice cracked.

“I didn’t know.””

Mia laughed.

A sharp, bitter sound.

“You didn’t know?””

She looked around the room.

“Everyone hear that? He didn’t know.””

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Mia, stop.””

“No.””

Mia pointed at me.

“He spent years pretending he was this perfect husband and perfect father. But he had another family.””

Daniel shook his head.

“Another family?””

I looked at him.

“No.””

“Then explain.””

I sat down.

My legs suddenly felt weak.

“The baby wasn’t mine.””

Nobody moved.

Mia’s smile disappeared slightly.

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

I looked at the photograph in my hand.

At the younger version of myself.

At the life I thought I had left behind.

“Eleanor was pregnant when she left.””

Claire covered her mouth.

“Dad…”

“I didn’t know until years later.””

Daniel stared.

“Why didn’t you tell us?””

“Because I found out after she was already gone.””

“That doesn’t answer the question.””

He wasn’t angry anymore.

That was worse.

He was hurt.

I leaned forward.

“When Eleanor disappeared, I searched for her for months. I contacted her family. I hired someone to find her.””

I swallowed.

“I eventually found out she had given birth.””

Mia crossed her arms.

“And?””

I looked at her.

“And the child wasn’t mine.””

Daniel shook his head.

“How do you know?””

Because Eleanor told me.

Because she sent me a letter.

Because she admitted she had been seeing someone else.

Because she begged me to stop searching.

But saying those words out loud felt cruel.

Even after all these years.

“Eleanor told me.””

Mia immediately stepped in.

“Convenient.””

I turned toward her.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.””

“No?””

She walked to the desk.

“Then why did Margaret keep this?””

She pulled another document from her purse.

Daniel looked confused.

“What is that?””

Mia placed it beside the photograph.

“A DNA report.””

My heart stopped.

Claire picked it up.

She read the first few lines.

Then her face went pale.

“Dad…”

I took the paper.

The name at the top made my hands shake.

Daniel Harrison.

My son.

The report showed a relationship.

A biological relationship.

But not the one Mia wanted everyone to believe.

Daniel saw my expression.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“It says you’re related to someone.””

His eyes narrowed.

“Who?””

Before I could answer, Mia spoke.

“Your real father.””

Daniel turned.

“What?””

Mia smiled.

“You heard me.””

The room felt smaller.

She stepped closer.

“Your father has spent your entire life making you believe he was the man who raised you.””

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad?””

I couldn’t speak.

Not because Mia was right.

Because I was remembering something I had tried to forget.

The hospital room.

The phone call.

Margaret crying.

The envelope she placed in my hands.

The promise she made me swear.

Never tell him.

Never let him feel unwanted.

I had carried that promise for thirty-eight years.

But promises made out of love could still become secrets.

And secrets could still become weapons.

Daniel’s voice became softer.

“Dad.””

I looked up.

“I need the truth.””

I closed my eyes.

Then I finally said the words.

“The man who donated the blood for your DNA test…”

Everyone froze.

“Was not your biological father.””

Daniel stared.

“Then who was?””

Before I could answer, my phone rang.

The screen showed a number I had not seen in decades.

Eleanor’s old number.

A number that should have been disconnected twenty years ago.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman’s voice whispered:

“Thomas?””

My entire body went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

“Eleanor?””

A pause.

Then:

May you like

“I’m sorry.””

The call ended.
