Chapter 6: The Woman Who Came Back
Nobody spoke after the call ended.
The silence was heavier than any accusation.
Daniel stared at me.
“Was that her?””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Claire looked frightened.
“But she’s been gone for twenty years.””
“I know.””
Mia looked almost satisfied.
Like she had been waiting for this moment.
“She’s alive.””
I looked at her.
“You knew.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Daniel noticed too.
“You knew my father’s first wife was alive?””
Mia shrugged.
“I found information.””
“You found information?””
His voice rose.
“You investigated my family.””
“I investigated the man who controls the house we live in.””
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s what this was about?””
Mia looked away.
For the first time, I saw something beneath her confidence.
Desperation.
Not anger.
Not revenge.
Fear.
She was afraid of losing something.
The question was:
What?
Claire walked toward the window.
“Dad, tell us everything.””
I looked at the dining room.
At the roses.
At the place where Margaret had sat every year.
My wife had known.
She had known more than I realized.
“I met Eleanor when I was twenty-five,” I began.
The memories came slowly.
“She was brilliant. Funny. Beautiful. But she carried pain she never talked about.””
I looked at Daniel.
“When she became pregnant, we were already falling apart.””
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You thought I was yours.””
“Yes.””
“And then?””
“Then she disappeared.””
I explained everything.
The search.
The letter.
The truth.
Eleanor had admitted Daniel was not my biological child.
But Margaret and I had already bonded with him.
By then, I had raised him from birth.
I had been there for every fever.
Every birthday.
Every nightmare.
Blood did not make a father.
Love did.
“I wanted to tell you,” I said.
Daniel looked away.
“But Mom stopped you.””
I nodded.
“She said you were my son because I chose you.””
Claire wiped her eyes.
“That sounds like Mom.””
A small smile appeared on my face.
The first real one all night.
“Yes.””
Then Daniel said something that broke it.
“So you lied to me.””
I looked at him.
“I protected you.””
“You decided I couldn’t handle the truth.””
“I was afraid the truth would hurt you.””
He laughed quietly.
“You didn’t trust me.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I loved you.””
Daniel turned away.
And that hurt more than the slap.
Mia watched him.
Then quietly said:
“You should ask him about the money.””
Daniel looked back.
“What money?””
I turned toward her.
“What are you talking about?””
Mia pulled out another envelope.
“You really thought Margaret never told anyone?””
I stood.
“Stop.””
But she opened it.
Inside were bank records.
Daniel looked at them.
“What are these?””
Mia answered.
“Payments.””
Claire took the papers.
Her eyes moved quickly.
“Dad…”
I walked closer.
The account belonged to Margaret.
The payments were made to someone named Samuel Blake.
Eleanor’s maiden name.
My heart dropped.
“No.””
Mia smiled.
“Exactly.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who is Samuel Blake?””
I stared at the papers.
I didn’t know.
I had never heard that name.
Then Claire turned the page.
“There’s a note.””
She read it aloud.
“Payment for Daniel’s protection.””
Everyone became silent.
Daniel looked at me.
“My protection from who?””
I didn’t know.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time that night, I realized something.
Mia had not uncovered my secrets.
Someone had given them to her.
Someone wanted my family destroyed.
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
Older.
Tired.
Holding a small suitcase.
Her eyes locked onto mine.
“Thomas.””
Nobody moved.
Daniel whispered:
“Who is that?””
The woman looked at him.
May you like
Tears filled her eyes.
“My son.””
